Teen Arrested in West Indian Day Parade Shooting Was Out on Bail for Separate Shooting

The 19-year-old arrested in connection a shooting during the West Indian Day Parade on Monday had been released on bail just over a month prior for his alleged role in a separate shooting, police said.

Wearing a “Just Do It” T-shirt, Nayshawn Wilkinson kept his head down and said nothing as police led him out of a Brooklyn police precinct Tuesday afternoon, charged with assault and weapon possession offenses.

Police said he was responsible for shooting a 24-year-old man in the backside toward the end of the parade in Crown Heights over the holiday weekend.

Security video showed the chaos unfold on Nostrand Avenue on Monday, as crowds of people could be seen running for cover moments after gunfire sent paradegoers into frenzy.

The gunfire came a little more than a month after Wilkinson was freed on bail for a different shooting in Brooklyn. {snip}

Those who live in the area and attend the annual celebration of Caribbean culture voiced frustration that the violence at the parade garners more attention than similar crimes that happen in the neighborhood on any other day.
