Chinese Human Rights Lawyer in the U.S. on Asylum After Fleeing Country Detained by ICE in Pennsylvania

Wu Shaoping was detained by ICE in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, July 15. He had been living in the state with his wife and 17-year-old daughter and working as a contract delivery driver for Amazon, per The New York Times.

According to his lawyer, Josh Visher, he was delivering packages near the borough of Mount Holly Springs, about 120 miles west of Philadelphia, when he was pulled over in a traffic stop.

He said, via The New York Times, that Wu, who entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2019 and lives in the city of Lancaster, told the officer about his asylum application and current status.

Wu came to the U.S. in 2019, days after he attended a meeting with other lawyers and activists in China. He fled his home country after the government began detaining those present the following year, he applied for asylum.

His loved ones and supporters are concerned that he could be deported back to China, where he may face persecution, the outlet states. Per The New York Times, two of the individuals who took part in the 2019 meeting alongside him are still in jail.
