Suspected French Gunman Killed by Police

French police said Thursday that {snip} Cherif Chekatt, 29, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police in a building just over a mile away from the location of Strasbourg’s market, sources told Reuters.

Chekatt’s parents and two brothers were still in custody Thursday, Reuters reports. It is unknown if the 29-year-old suspect had help in the attack, but Chekatt spent roughly 48 hours on the run following Tuesday’s attack.

Chekatt was known to European authorities, as he spent considerable time in prison for a series of criminal charges including robberies across several countries.
It is thought that Chekatt was radicalized by Islamic teachings while serving time, according to French authorities.
