California Newspaper Office Vandalized over Use of ‘Illegal’ Immigrant Label

Fox News, January 9, 2015

A California newspaper will continue to use the term “illegals” to describe people who enter the U.S. without permission, despite an attack on its building by vandals believed to object to the term.

The Santa Barbara News-Press’s front entrance was sprayed with the message “The border is illegal, not the people who cross it” in red paint, sometime either Wednesday night or early Thursday, according to the newspaper’s director of operations, Donald Katich. The attack came amid wider objections to a News-Press headline that used the word “illegals” alongside a story on California granting driver’s licenses to people in the country illegally.

“The vandalism and the damage speak for itself, as well as the motivation behind it,” Santa Barbara Police Officer Mitch Jan said. “At this point in time, I don’t really have any suspect information. Without cameras or an eyewitness, we really don’t know who would be responsible.”

In addition to the writing on the building, graffiti espousing a no-borders mentality was scribbled on the walkway through Storke Placita and the sidewalk near Santa Barbara City Hall. Police were braced for a protest in front of the paper later this week. Jan said hundreds could show up, and the Police Department is aware of the call for a protest.

In a statement, the newspaper said it has no plans to drop its style in describing illegal immigrants.

“It has been the practice for nearly 10 years at the Santa Barbara News-Press to describe people living in this country illegally as ‘illegals’ regardless of their country of origin,” the statement read. “This practice is under fire by some immigration groups who believe that this term is demeaning and does not accurately reflect the status of ‘undocumented immigrants,’ one of several terms other media use to describe people in the Unites States illegally.

“It is an appropriate term in describing someone as ‘illegal’ if they are in this country illegally,” the statement added.

“Graffiti claimed that border was “illegal,” not the people who cross it.”

Funny that Mexicans don’t share that attitude when it comes to defending their southern border from illegals from Guatemala.

  • MekongDelta69

What part of illegal do these brown low-lives NOT understand?

Oh wait… never mind… I was trying to be logical for a moment there…

    • Triarius

      How white of you, lol.

  • JackKrak

I won’t be lectured on the concept of legality by a people who would still be sacrificing virgins to appease an angry sun god if it weren’t for the white man teaching him how to use a fork and wear clothes.

  • superlloyd

The truth hurts the white, cultural marxist libtards who probably wrote this graffiti. Laws don’t exist in their world view neither do nation states.

    • MBlanc46

Laws would certainly exist if they ever got into power. And secret denunciations. And star chamber proceedings. And camps. And disappearances.

    • Who Me?

They also can’t spell. Illegal is NOT spelled “illeagle”.

  • “The border is illegal not the people who cross it”

Could I use that excuse vis-a-vis the White House fence?

Note to Secret Service: I’m not dumb enough to try. Besides, I’m in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the moment, on one of those wonderful long weekend work junkets to South Dakota in January.

    • Who Me?

What kind of a civilized workplace sends someone to South Dakota in January?

      • A workplace that expects those who it send on this trip to get stuff done and hopefully learn a thing or three, not golf.

        • Who Me?

I’d think they might worry about the fact that the people they send don’t know the area. They might get lost in one of those blizzards and freeze to death. Please stay safe, QD.

          • There’s a bit of snow around. But it’s not up to my knees. It’s also cold, really cold. But the good news is that these meetings and sessions are held indoors in buildings where there is indoor climate control. My hotel rooms also conveniently have heat, and so does the company car I rode in/drove to get here and to get back.

Not good golfing weather though. Oh no.

It’s hardly news that the left is lying again.

  • A Freespeechzone

Until or unless legal Americans take action to stop this behavior; it will escalate.

Illegals should have NO rights–but cowardly ‘progressives’ and government believe illegals deserve more rights than Americans to atone for so-called past sins.

    • MBlanc46

Yep. It’s past time that we stood up and demanded that it stop.

    • IstvanIN

Gosh I can not believe you used the term “legal American”, sort of like saying “White Briton”, the adjective should be necessary.

    • DonReynolds

What sins? Hispanics have no grievance against this country. We owe for no sins.

      • A Freespeechzone

Many illegals & many on our govt (liberals) believe America has ‘stolen’ from others to achieve our leadership and lifestyle and open borders is our ‘payback’. THAT is the ‘sin’ liberals use.

MOST illegals are Hispanics, but, they are also from other countries.

Illegals overall take from America and Americans more than they contribute as they tend to be uneducated and very little skills.

Moreover, illegals DEMAND rights and social services at the expense of Americans.

Controlled legal immigration is supported–but no longer exists.

“The border is illegal, not the people who cross it”

This is Gov. Brown’s Border policy, the more illegals in California, the better.

Illegal colonization by foreign invaders and the on-going race-replacement of Native Born White Californians is a form of terrorism.

  • Who Me?

They don’t want to be called “illegal”? Fine then! We’ll just call you what you are–CRIMINALS!

  • Reynardine

The Latino thought process in action. The borders of a nation are the problem, not the people trying violate the laws of that nation.

  • MBlanc46

If I had to guess, it would be UCSB students. That place is just lousy with social justice warriors.

  • Alexandra1973

I guess locks should be illegal, since it prevents undocumented residents from entering.

    • Triarius

I like that. Might have to borrow it, if I may.

  • Paleoconn

As somebody (Derb?) once pointed out, ‘undocumented’ is a misnomer. If it’s one thing these moochers have is plenty of false documents. I call them invaders, plain and simple. And what do healthy, sane countries do with invaders? They shoot them. Armed or not. Assume they’re armed. When you out armed people to guard the border, those weapons should be used now and then. Use them. Broadcast the body count on the hispanic channels. Observe the dwindling numbers of invaders.

  • guest

This was probably done by some “social justice crusader” trying to make a point about racism, like that student from Sweet Briar College who hung those “Whites Only” and “Colored” signs on doors and water fountains in the college dormitory.

  • Samuel Hathaway

And Mexico stole the Southwest from Spain in 1821… remember?!!?? Spain claimed the Southwest and Mexico stole it from Spain…so if we have to give it back, give it back to Spain.

    • Lkoehn

Just give them California which would be no great loss. I am sure you have heard that it is nothing but fruits and nuts and all the rest are flakes.

    • Julius Caesar

Go to YouTube and search “Bill Whittle on whose is it”. That video explains the issue fairly simply. I always point towards that when someone tells me that the southwestern territories of the U.S. belongs to Mexico.

Your doors and windows are illegal! Not the undocu,, I mean, “uninvited guest” who crawl through them. And don’t even think about what they plan on doing once inside your home, cause that would be racist.

  • DonReynolds

Under US law, the ONLY immigrants are those who came to this country legally and are part of the immigration system. Foreign citizens (aliens) who come to this country illegally or remain illegally are properly called “illegal aliens”. Some of these may also be known as criminal aliens or enemy aliens.

  • ViktorNN

Must suck to be a Mexican. To hate white people so much, but to be so utterly dependent on us that they have to sneak into our country just to serve us beer and wash our dirty dishes. If only they had what it took on their own to make a first world nation. The plight of the genetically forsaken. I would pity them if they didn’t foul up everywhere they go.

  • WR_the_realist

A part of the press in California still has some sense. Will wonders never cease?

  • archer

Borders are illegal only in white countries.

  • John Smith

More pro-criminal sentiment form the Left.

  • Augustus3709

No, the border is not “illegal”.

If you do not recognize the border, then by all means put on a uniform and declare war on the United States. See how that turns out.

  • Lkoehn

Perhaps a bounty on illegal aliens that would allow civilians to hunt them would solve the problem? It seems that they can not comprehend the word illegal and a bounty would help convince them I am sure.

    • IstvanIN

I have often thought that bounty hunters, along with regular deportation and self-deportation, would actually get rid of them.

          • Lkoehn

We should never meet or get together as no good would ever come from us.

  • Bon, From the Land of Babble

Geez, glad I’ve never come across THAT – it would ruin my day.

Where is it so I can make sure I avoid it?

SF is as lefty as it wants to be – but when it comes to their bread and butter – businesses and tourists – it is ALL conservative.

  • Who Me?

“Mexicans who live in the U.S are looked down upon in Mexico and are referred to as “Los Necisitados” which translates to those in need.”
Los Necisitados is exactly right. It is not the upper class, nor yet the middle class Mexicans who are sneaking across the international border to parasitize the United States government and Her citizens. The Mexican government has no use for the very poor and Indios. The more of them that move north the better as far as they are concerned. The problem is, these very poor and mostly illiterate peasants ARE Mexican citizens, whether the rulers of their country want to admit it or not, and as such need to be taken care of at home, not allowed to “sponge off the neighbors”. There are two, intertwined problems at work here. The poor that move north, and the Mexican government that encourages this movement. Thus: Mexico is a problem.

Just last week I was having this similar debate. This one female tells me that “amnesty would help the economy”. I told her she wrong because they take more than they actually contribute. I told her that the birth of a child cost the taxpayer tens of thousands of dollars, which would actually take them their whole lives to pay in taxes.

As for your last paragraph. I was actually reading that Mexico is beefing up its southern border, and has added 5 new border patrol stations. Arrest on their border has actually gone up. Not to mention when Central Americans are caught they are usually robbed and beaten.

  • ViktorNN

Must be nice to have a growing middle class achieved in part by exporting poor people to a neighboring country. A lot cheaper than having a functioning social welfare system, huh?

Never mind that Mexico’s poor countrymen are dragging down the wages/benefits of the middle class in the neighboring country. It’s still better to get something for nothing.

This is the Mexican mentality – it’s based on an attitude that rationalizes moral failure. I suspect that to some degree this cultural expression is innate.

    We’re cursed with such neighbors.

  • LHathaway

“‘Mexico had 579,814 students enrolled in engineering programs in 2011, double the number five years earlier and more than Brazil or Germany”

Great, they’re all moving to the USA soon. Affirmative action females need someone to marry. They would prefer it to be someone who holds the same ‘interests’ that they do.

    • Spaniard in LA

As a matter of fact several weeks ago at my local gym, I started a conversation with 3 Mexican nationals. Come to find out they work for a local company as systems engineers. Meanwhile, my 3rd generation German American friend who is also a systems engineer hasn’t been able to find employment.

  • If borders are illegal, does that mean the Greaseritos y Greaseritas now need to all move south to Antarctica?

  • Pat Kittle

Illegally illegal illegals illegally want to make it illegal to call illegally illegal illegals illegal.
