FCC Mulls Banning Redskins Name

Brendan Sasso, National Journal, September 30, 2014

The Federal Communications Commission is weighing whether to ban TV stations from saying the name of Washington’s football team.

A law professor filed a petition with the agency earlier this month, claiming that the name “Redskins” violates federal rules barring any indecent content on broadcast television.

At a press conference Tuesday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said he is reviewing the filing.

“We will be dealing with that issue on the merits, and we will be responding accordingly,” Wheeler said.

The FCC chief said he personally finds the term offensive and urged the team to change the name. But he didn’t say whether he thinks it is illegal.

“There are a lot of names and descriptions that were used for a time that are inappropriate today,” he said. “I think the name that is attributed to the Washington football club is one of those.”

Liberals believe that the power of the federal government should be used to eradicate anything that they don’t like. Even something as superfluous as a football team name.

Speaking of Liberals and football, did you notice that Liberals were more offended by a Muslim NFL player getting flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for performing a Muslim prayer after a touchdown than Liberals were offended by the Muslim beheading a coworker in Oklahoma.

    • As far as that goes, let’s expose a little bit of leftist hypocrisy with two words:

      Tim Tebow.

      • Paleoconn

What do you mean QD? Serious question, what about Tebow?

        • Tebowing. The media gave him grief over it.

          • Paleoconn

Gotcha, they tolerate public displays of religion, as long as said displays are not Christian.

When I heard on the radio today this absurd petition was filed by an unnamed law professor I knew it was John Banzhaf, a Nanny State ninny who just may be the world’s most relentlessly annoying douchebag.

  • There is too much cussing on the public airwaves. How do I know? I hear and see the words “Southern Poverty Law Center” on over-the-air media all the time.

    • propagandaoftruth

I suppose going with something similar that accurately represents the ethnic minority that really pow wows in the DC… Still unacceptable but…

      The Washington Bluegums

      Compare.

      • How ’bout the Washington Crack-heads?

        • propagandaoftruth

Just imagine the pic in the left, stylized by some art school grad/nephew of the owner for a cool 75 grand and then that logo slapped on a feetsbal hemmet and on pennants and coolers and all over advertisia.

          Just imagine, Michael.

FCC chairman says he finds the name ‘offensive.’

I find FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler ‘offensive.’

    Ban him…

  • D.B. Cooper

How, oh how did “yes boy” Wheeler live to be almost 70 years old having to hear that mascot name? Send this old F- -T to the nursing home. With this act of sissification, I would rather have a black female replace him instead of another pansy white boy. Yes, I’m calling the old geez a boy because he sure aint actin’ like a man.

We’ve all heard the expression “give an inch, take a mile”. Here’s where free speech starts getting restricted. The Progs have figured out how an unelected bureaucrat can make a decision that will restrict the expressions/speech of basically something they don’t like for any real reason other than their own feelings that the name is offensive.

We’ve already seen some California newspapers announce they won’t publish any stories which refute global warming or climate change. RFK jr thinks if you disagree with him on climate change you have committed a crime and deserve jail time for your opinion. When the FCC decides that it’s settled science and prohibits public discussion on the matter (which the BBC has considered, feeling that a debate makes people think that the issue is 50/50 when they consider it 98/2) because of “scientific findings which make other opinions dangerous” you have killed the first amendment without anyone voting, amending the constitution, or even debating the wisdom. Just a faceless unelected official who will be able to dictate public discourse with memorandums.

As usual the decision will be made by an ultra left wing star chamber who answer to nobody except perhaps Barack Hussein Ebola who is directing all this traffic from behind the scenes.

If the left keeps looking for a counter revolution, they may just find it.

    • LHathaway

      That will be called separation.

      • No, it will be called “genocide”. We will be metaphysically separated.

        • LHathaway

I’m sad to say, though I’ve read the term and heard it spoken before, I never quite got a handle on ‘Metaphysics’. I always thought it meant an examination of spirituality or an examination of God. I’m going to have to look up that term again.

  • Bobbala

We need some kind of Bill of Rights …

  • Bobbala

What good is the 2nd amendment after you’ve already surrendered the rest of them?

  • Nudity and cursing are not indecent but saying the words “red” and “skins” really fast together is indecent? The FCC is a joke, promoting and/or allowing every foul cultural Marxist deed under the sun on TV.

With Gilligan’s Island just celebrating its 50th anniversary, I’m ready to roll back the clock to when TV wasn’t the anti-white, anti-Christian, anti-male propaganda machine it now is.

    • Ron Cheaters

Agreed. Why isn’t this garbage censored?

      • propagandaoftruth

Looks like a terrible black woman principal.

    People take sportsball too seriously.

    • I call it n****r-ball. We have three varieties: autumn n****r-ball, winter n****r-ball and spring n****r-ball, all televised on n****rvision. The steroid-using Williams sisters play nennis, and Tiger Woods plays nolf. I like to watch him lose.

  • John Smith

Many will think I am crazy…but…this also will NEVER end.

What about pro/college teams like Raiders, Trojans, Spartans, Vikings, Nordics, Celtics, etc?

“Oh my God, these teams are symbols of white oppression and colonization. They are a constant hurtful reminder of how evil Whitey is! They gotta go! They gotta be renamed!”

This PC insanity is like termites (or maybe boa constrictors.) It will NEVER let up.

Like with everything else, this won’t happen overnight…but it WILL happen Give it a few years as our #’s continue to plummet.

  • Screamin_Ruffed_Grouse

As an aside, Dan Snyder is looking for a new home for the team. Probably in VA, as every elected Democrat in their current home state of MD is on record opposing their name.

    • I’ve heard that, and at first I was taken aback because their current stadium is just a baby (1997). Then I realized that FedEx Field is in Bell Curve County, People’s Republic of Maryland.

  • rebellisMMXII

Skip football and watch Ice Hockey.

    • Screamin_Ruffed_Grouse

      Let’s go Pens!

  • Audacious prediction:

Starting on November 5, a lot of this anti-Redskins hoopla will die down.

That should give you a clue to what it’s really all about, or what I think it’s all about.

  • Ike Eichenberg

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

  • Paleoconn

Wheeler should change his name. It’s an offensive reminder to blacks and mestizos that they never invented the wheel.

  • OhWow

This is what it really is underneath it all:

Blacks riot and scream racism, Indians say they are offended, hispanics call us racist for fighting back against illegal invasion, etc. I think this happens because these groups are jealous of whites. They are jealous of the accomplishments, the success, the empires, the founding of this country, the military might, the inventions, etc. that whites have had. They cannot measure up to us, so all they can do is call us names or tell on us to the SPLC. They are like little tattle tale siblings who get back at their older more successful brother anyway they can, because they are jealous. They aren’t REALLY offended by this stuff…they just know it’s the only way to get back at us…by labeling us racists and saying whatever we do offends them so the leftists come out of the woodwork and spew anti-white hatred.

    • Alexandra1973

I have some Amerind ancestry and I don’t find the name offensive in the least.

This appears to be more of what Dr. Yeagley called “professional bellyaching.”

  • Puggg

Won’t be able to say Redskins anymore over the public airwaves?

This would be George Carlin material if he was still alive.

    • SFLBIB

Maybe they can change it to Skin Reds.
