Australian University Suspends Academic for Email Racism

BBC News, October 17, 2014

The University of Sydney has suspended a professor and government education adviser for sending racist emails.

Prof Barry Spurr referred to Aboriginal people as “human rubbish tips” and used racist terms to refer to Muslims and Asians in Australia.

The poetry professor said the emails were part of a “whimsical” game, but students are demanding his dismissal.

In a recent review of the curriculum, Prof Spurr had advised that schools teach less Aboriginal literature.

The emails were obtained by Australian magazine New Matilda, which said they had been sent to about a dozen people, including officials and academics at the university between September 2012 and late 2014.

In them Prof Spurr refers to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott an “Abo-lover”–an offensive term for Aborigines–and to Nelson Mandela as a “darky”.

The magazine said he also referred to the “modern Brit” as “the scum of the earth”.

‘Mocking repartee’

Prof Spurr does not deny sending the emails but told New Matilda that they were part of a “whimsical linguistic game”.

They were not a reflection of his views nor the recipients’, but were “repartee, mocking, in fact, that very kind of extreme language”, the magazine quoted him as saying.

He said he had always treated all his students with “equity and dignity”.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne said in a statement the emails were a matter for Prof Spurr but called them “repugnant”.

He said the government had not made the decision to appoint Prof Spurr as a consultant for the review of the national English curriculum. He was brought on as a specialist advisor by the heads of the review, he said.

One of Prof Spurr’s contributions to the review had been to advise the government to focus less on teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander literature. Instead he advocated a stronger emphasis on Western writing.

Prof Spurr wrote that “the impact of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on literature in English in Australia has been minimal and is vastly outweighed by the impact of global literature in English, and especially that from Britain, on our literary culture”.

Michelle Rowland, the opposition spokesperson on multiculturalism, said Mr Pyne could not just distance himself from the comments.

“The buck must surely stop with someone, and it must stop with the minister,” she told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The University of Sydney said in a statement: “Racist, sexist or offensive language is not tolerated at the University of Sydney.”

The university has suspended Prof Spurr but the the BBC’s Jon Donnison in Sydney said students there are calling for him to be sacked.

Does the Education minister of Australia not have better things to do than publicly condemn a poetry teacher.

At the same time I have no sympathy for him. He should have stuck to his guns. Instead he retracted and said ” I’m so so sorry. I love the destruction of my people and culture.” Well he might aswell have said it.

    • Whitetrashgang

      Under the B, 52.

    • He should have said exactly that. Grovelling to the left never pays off, so insulting them is the only rational response.

    • silviosilver

I don’t know, his silly excuse (“whimsical game”) didn’t sound too apologetic Compared to other contemptible cretins I think he held up fairly well. He deserves a passing grade.

My advice if you’re caught out like this is to say, “Look, statements like these are just expressions of supreme frustration with the absurd direction our culture is traveling. That’s what we need to focus on.” If asked if “but are you sorry?” you say, “No, I do not apologize” and if pressed further reiterate the first statement.

  • superlloyd

60,000 years in Australia and all the abos ever invented was the pointed stick. Aborigine Literature – Give me a break. I am shocked that an academic in the humanities spoke the truth.

    • Whitetrashgang

Well that’s really not a invention, in Canada the natives invented drinking all day. Still their best invention, but not just up there with diet coke.

      • superlloyd

You’re right. I was being overgenerous. Without that they have nothing.

      • Ron Cheaters

        You left out huffing gas.

        • Australian Aborigines also like sniffing gasoline fumes. Fortunately, the staggering level of “dain bramage” this doubtless creates is not usually noticeable among them.

      • Doomispixulated

That is so true. I witness it every day. They used to have to drink Lysol or hairspray on Sundays but now the Liquor store is open 7 days a week so they can get their XXX brand wine (no joke) every day. Life is a party!

    • DiversityIsDeath

Can Aborigines have “literature” when they do not have a written language?

    • Luca

Please, lets be fair. They invented the pointy stick, the boomerang and the loincloth.

  • Tarczan

In them Prof Spurr refers to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott an “Abo-lover”–an offensive term for Aborigines–and to Nelson Mandela as a “darky”.

You mean I’ve been spelling darkie wrong all this time?

    • I believe the correct Australian pejorative term for an Aborigine is “boong”.

      • Bryce Armstrong

Are you sure its not coong?

        • Headwinds of Reality

We usually leave off the ‘g’.

Look up the Encylopedia Dramatica entry for Australian Aboriginals for a good laugh and surprisingly contains many nuggets of truth.

          • Bryce Armstrong

Really and I was just trying to be funny.

    • Bryce Armstrong

I think the correct spelling is kaffir.

  • Julius Caesar

Well, he definitely isn’t lying. Abbos ARE human rubbish, if you can even think of them that highly. It should still be legal to hunt those…things.

  • propagandaoftruth

    A whimsical man making sense.

So much for whimsy. Whimsy – the new RACIST!

  • MekongDelta69

    “He called Aboriginals ‘human rubbish.’”

    And the problem is…?

  • dd121

But they ARE human rubbish. I don’t understand why the truth would upset anybody.

  • Kenner

I would of suspended him for misusing the word ‘human’.

  • MekongDelta69

“The university has suspended Prof Spurr but the the BBC’s Jon Donnison in Sydney said students there are calling for him to be sacked… beheaded.”

  • Luca

He should have claimed “Poetic License” and insisted he was only trying to promote a dialogue.

Opinions and free speech are a thing of the past where ever Liberals rule.

  • Dave West

Judging from the stories i’ve heard about the Aborigines from various people, they have done the impossible. They have made black Americans seem like a godsend.

    • Well, without the 24/7 promotion machine of the US media and overall culture of worship of the magical negro the black American would hardly be considered much better than the Aborigines.

    • Headwinds of Reality

Not really, Aborigines are far less violent and far less organized than African Americans, they don’t go around shooting whites, or playing the knockout game, they mostly stick to petty crime like breaking into cars to steal loose change, getting drunk/high in a park etc.

Over here we mostly just throw a welfare check at them each fortnight and then forget about them. I would take our Aborigines any day over Shitavius Bellcurvius, they are far less aggressive and will almost always back down from a white male that stands up to them.

      • Carney3

We used to think blacks were passive, happy-go-lucky, deferential types too.

  • Whitetrashgang

If the west gets any gayer it will be straight.

  • Whitetrashgang

Yes the system has it flaws but I am sure it will be worked out.

  • propagandaoftruth

Same throughout the West regarding truth and race.

  • LIBERTYSINCURSION

It’s funny, < but not really ) how other ethnic groups can say just about anything they want about White people. And 99.99% of the time no one ever even hears about it in the media. In fact, much of the Hate Whitey ideology is not simply spoken of in some e-mail by a Professor. It's actually taught right there in the class room! However, in my humble opinion we all need to refrain from using the stupid names like "Darky", "Abo-Lover" and "N—–" when we speak on racial matters. It destroys our argument before we've even finished making it. Which only plays right into the hands of our opposition. The stakes are too high to allow such avoidable damage to be done to the legitimacy of White identity.

    • B.A_2014

We can use those terms among friends, right?

      I do love them words.

    • Sick of it

I’m neither a darky nor an abo-lover, so the terms don’t bother me in the slightest. Seriously, listen to other ethnic groups talk about race. This is a joke.

  • B.A_2014

That money would be better spent building. . . never mind.

  • ckmariner

He lied. They are sub-human trash!

  • Lygeia

It really isn’t right to refer to our fellow human beings as “human rubbish.”

Every human person has dignity, even if it is hard-to-nearly-impossible to see, it’s there; we just don’t all have the same abilities.

The average Aboriginial IQ is 57 (human IQ starts at 46) and so they may not have the same abilities, but calling them human rubbish is going too far.

    • Sick of it

So we should be glad that they are barely smarter than dogs? Forgive my lack of applause.

    • I agree. Calling them human rubbish is too great a compliment.

    • Exactly, and it certainly won’t gain any converts for our point of view.

      • Sick of it

        Liars never favor the truth.

    • John

“calling them human rubbish is going too far.” I agree. We certainly don’t want to be insulting perfectly good rubbish to that extreme.

  • MBlanc46

“[T]he impact of global literature in English, and especially that from Britain, on our literary culture”.

I certainly wouldn’t use the sort of language that the Prof used (for whatever reason). But I sure do agree with the above quotation.

  • Ultimate187

Saying racist things is one thing, where it’s possible to claim miscommunication or misinterpretation of words. But writing it down in email correspondence is entirely different, and it has ended many careers in academia or government because people can’t separate their personal beliefs from their professional conduct.

  • JohnEngelman

Posting facts about racial differences is one thing. Posting the attitudes Prof Barry Spurr did is something else. I do not feel protective toward him.

  • Who Me?

The thing I found most incredible about the aboriginals is, until white settlers arrived and taught them, they had no idea of the connection between sex and having children. This is so elemental that even some animals grasp the concept, and has been common knowledge among all other humans since they came down out of the trees. How they managed to miss knowing this is incredible.

    • Oil Can Harry

The Abos didn’t know sex leads to children but they sure know about having sex with children.

  • JohnEngelman

Prof Barry Spur is an embarrassment to race realists like J. Philippe Rushton who have risked their careers telling the truth about racial differences. Attitudes of contempt and hostility do not merit the protection scientific facts do.

    • silviosilver

How would you punish him, Engelman?

      • JohnEngelman

In his case firing is probably appropriate. Someone with his attitudes cannot be trusted to give non whites fair grades.

Of course, other professors have his attitudes. However, if he can post those e-mail letters and get away with it he will think he is above the law.

        • John

“he will think he is above the law.” The law? What law? Since when is developing an opinion based on everyday and common sense observations and stating it in what were supposed to be private correspondence against the law? Are you using a walker to get around these days? Every time you post here anymore you eventually end up shooting yourself in the foot.

          • JohnEngelman

A fact is one thing. An attitude of hostility and contempt is something else.

Australian Aborigines are not “human rubbish tips.”

  • Thorsted

A case of “Falling Down” syndrome.

  • antiquesunlight

“Prof Spurr wrote that ‘the impact of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on literature in English in Australia has been minimal and is vastly outweighed by the impact of global literature in English, and especially that from Britain, on our literary culture’.”

Well, well, well. We can’t have a literature professor talking sense, now can we?

I wish I’d had this guy for literature class. My professor liked to talk about how artistic rap lyrics are.

    • Sick of it

      And I thought I had bad professors…

    • PesachPatriot

If you’ve heard one rap song, you’ve heard them all…same lyrical themes “muh d**, muh hoes, gats, bling, rims, selling dope and rioting”….I bet your professor never went down to MLK boulevard on a saturday night to listen to “artistic” rap lyrics….

      • antiquesunlight

I actually really liked the professor. He was nice and interesting. Unfortunately, he is infected with the disease that is killing our people: anti-white self-hatred.

  • I am not sure what the poetry professor thought would happen with this kind of language? It doesn’t bother me in the least, but we all realize the soft and effeminate world we live in. He could have easily made the same points, more articulately, and in such a way that would make the risk minimal.

    • mikekingjr

Really dumb on the professor’s part to use email to make his statements imo. Email is forever, and accessible to just about everyone in short order after being posted.

  • LHathaway

How is it that only whites can be racist? How is it that almost all racial immigration is one way into white countries? No person of color in Australia is racist in any way, each and every one is a victim of racism?

We are to read stories like this and take away from it that Australia is racist towards, people of color.

  • IKUredux

OMG! My most favorite book ever was written by an Abo! Yeah, no, I was completely unaware of the fact that an Abo has written a book. Apparently, so many Abos have written books, that they can actually be studied. If there are any Aussie readers of this website, I am begging you for the Abo authors that are SOOOO good, they must be studied. Oh, I would NEVER trust a teacher who wasn’t racist(so called). I prefer an original thinker. I myself, prefer to be called a “Whiteist”.

  • Gary John 金白龍

World’s lowest IQ (about half that of Ashkenazi Jews).

  • Practically every Aborigine of consequence is mixed-blood – and barely distinguishable as Aborigine at all. Still, I wish them the best in their own ancestral lands and hope they succeed.

    • propagandaoftruth

Their genetics seem to be more recessive than Bantu. Third generation mixes can seem pretty white.

  • silviosilver

Prof Spurr wrote that “the impact of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples on literature in English in Australia has been minimal
and is vastly outweighed by the impact of global literature in English,
and especially that from Britain, on our literary culture”.

Phew, that is a horrible white supremacist hate crime if I’ve ever seen one. Jail this man. Destroy him.

    • Franklin_Ryckaert

This is what could be called a “hate fact”. Facts that are “offensive” to some people should be denied in order to stay PC.

    • Carney3

Don’t play dumb. It wasn’t that that ruined him. It was the slurs.

      • silviosilver

The article itself highlighted that statement, the intention being to solidify the portrayal of the professor as a moral monster. It’s the sort of remark lefties would treat as morally outrageous sans any accompanying slurs. It’s not a practice I’m in the mood to remain silent before.

  • JohnEngelman

I do not know very much about Australian Aborigines, but I am interested in them. How does their crime rate compare with that of white Australians? Do any 100 percent Aborigines get into college? Do any get professional positions?

  • mikekingjr

Students really DO know more about life than their instructors. It’s a universal truth.

  • DiversityIsDeath

Bleh, he’s too good for them. Let the University of Sydney hire some third rate replacement in keeping with their low standards.

  • Luca

Since the abos obviously migrated to Australia, one has to wonder how many came over in the first wave. With a small population arriving on Australia’s shores, over the next few generations there most have been a good deal of inbreeding going on. Regardless of the limitations of their DNA one has to wonder what generations of inbreeding has done to their intellectual capabilities. It is without question that they are living examples of primitive stone-age people. The fact that they can even breed with Whites and produce viable offspring is astonishing.

  • Luca

“Racist, sexist or offensive language is not tolerated at the University of Sydney.”

And of course, like all liberal establishments, the university gets to determine exactly what language they consider to be racist, sexist or offensive language. Obviously, anything spoken by a White person is immediately suspect.

  • Carney3

It’s just stupid to send any kind of ethnic slur from your work email account to anyone, even those you think might be friendly. It’s especially stupid to do that when you already have a target on your back by speaking out with Politically Incorrect opinions – in that case you have to be pure as the driven snow.

The hippies shaved and cut their hair – went “clean for Gene” – to appeal to ordinary decent Americans in New Hampshire as they campaigned for Eugene McCarthy. We should be at least as disciplined and goal oriented as the Far Left.
