See What They’ll Be Teaching in the Chicago Public Schools

Chicago public schools are set to introduce a new Afro-centric curriculum, according to a closely-guarded copy obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The curriculum covers kindergarten through tenth grade and is designed to align with Common Core. It includes a web link to TheAfrican.com, a website whose publisher decries “fake-Jews” and calls the United States a “Zionist-occupied enemy territory.”

The site also claims that the world will end sometime this year and that President Barack Obama is “merely another trick of [the beast of the 4th Kingdom].”

The new Chicago curriculum was announced last December.

“CPS has taken great pride in developing a yearlong, interdisciplinary African and African-American studies program that will enrich the understanding and appreciation of African and African-American history and culture to help build stronger and more cohesive student communities,” said Chicago Public School chief executive Byrd Bennett in an announcement of the curriculum, dubbed IAAAS.

CPS began developing IAAAS after a push last year from groups that wanted to implement a state law passed in 1990 that required public schools to offer one unit on African-American history.

But CPS went above and beyond, implementing the curriculum across all core disciplines, which include literacy, mathematics, science, social science, the arts, physical education and health.

“The law said it had to be one unit devoted to the history of African-Americans,” Annette Gurley, CPS chief officer of teaching and learning told the Chicago Tribune in 2013. “What we’ve done is we’ve taken it throughout the year for all subjects, not just one subject.”

But some of the subjects, including those discussed at TheAfrican.com, are heavily controversial. The Chicago curriculum topic discussed at TheAfrican.com is “The Black Athena,” a book written by historian Martin Bernal. Sixth and ninth grade Chicago students will discuss the book and an accompanying full-length Youtube documentary.

In the work, Bernal claimed that ancient Greeks stole much of its civilization from Egypt, which, Bernal asserts, was populated by blacks. The Chicago curriculum entertains rebuttals to Bernal’s theory but skews heavily in its favor.

Ron Fritze, a historian, the dean of Athens State University, and author of the book “Invented Knowledge,” says that Bernal’s theories are not historically accurate and have no place in Chicago schools.

“As a historian and an educator, I am very troubled by the notion of [students] in Chicago city schools spending five weeks on Bernal’s ideas,” Fritze told TheDCNF.

“His ideas are outliers of scholarship and have been largely discredited among other scholars,” said Fritze, noting that few scholars from Egypt or even China and Japan subscribe to Bernal’s theories.

Chicago fifth graders will be exposed to another controversial and widely-criticized theory in Ivan van Sertima’s “They Came Before Columbus.” Van Sertima, who taught at Rutgers University, theorized that Africans populated the Americas well before Columbus.

But critics largely panned the work. In a 1977 New York Times book review, archaeologist Glyn Daniel called van Sertima’s work “ignorant rubbish” and labeled it “myth and folklore.”

Nevertheless, the IAAAS curriculum provides a unit on the work that includes links to seven-part Youtube video series.

CPS initially denied TheDCNF’s request for a copy of the curriculum, made last year, citing the fact that the curriculum was still a preliminary draft.

But last December, Byrd-Bennett made a presentation using slides taken from the IAAAS curriculum. State open records laws require officials to release records of preliminary drafts when those records have been discussed in a public forum.

The Chicago curriculum does focus heavily on well established history and events–including discussions on slavery, the histories of black inventors, the civil rights movement and President Obama.

But other sections also delve into controversial areas. The eighth grade literacy section unit, titled “Being an Advocate to Social Justice,” directs students to the website for the American Civil Liberties Union. It also includes a poem titled “Racism is Around Me Everywhere,” cartoons from the website LeftyCartoons.com, and it encourages discussion of Attorney General Eric Holder’s infamous “nation of cowards” quote.

The ninth grade literacy section encompasses a study of the Pan African Movement. Teachers are encouraged to engage their students in debate over voluntary segregation. “Have someone read the following resolution, Resolved: voluntary segregation promotes growth in a diverse community. Teams then participate in a graded formal debate.”

They were still teaching us how to use them in junior high in Boulder in 1978-1981.           • The one thing I’ve seen an Asian do mathematically that I was never taught was direct calculation of a square root. I was taught to use successive approximations, with which one can reach a result that is arbitrarily close to the real answer. What my brother-in-law did also looked a lot like long-division, but produced the correct answer directly.

          I attended the Community College of Baltimore in 1969. The first day of a physics class, the instructor wrote out a math equation on the board. In it, he multiplied five times zero and answered zero. About 1/3 of the class was black. They debated (argued) that the answer should be five, not zero. The instructor spent minutes explaining why the answer was zero.

          When the blacks caught on, they started hand-slapping one another in celebration.

          It was a very long semester.

          The whole push now is to explain how, exactly, in 50-200 steps how you got your answer.

          My son recently took a third-year physics class at the university he attends, he tested out of the first two years. The professor made the class explain all of their answers down to the most minute, mundane, tedious detail. DS told me he knew exactly how to get the right answer but could not express in words exactly how he got there– he also considered the explanations a massive waste of time. He got a 100 on the midterm and final but ended up with a B+ in the class because the written explanations were so difficult for him and the professor marked him down. He was furious.

          That’s why I said above we’d have never gone to the moon if each scientist were forced to explain, in writing, the most infinitesimal detail of everything he was doing down to the last atom.

          • In happier but more stressful days as a chemical engineer, I went with what worked. Having to write detailed explanations for patent applications was really irritating, but I had to do that after some random patent attorney botched the first one.

            One of my subordinates asked me once, “How do you know what will work?” I explained that it was all experience and the resulting intuition.

            Your son sounds so familiar! My own son always gets into trouble in math class because he doesn’t ‘show’ his work when working out a math problem because he does it in his head. He thinks it’s totally unfair to get marked down, or a zero, even when the answer is correct. He thinks it’s a waste of time to go through all the steps as well, but the teachers are firm on showing that work.

          • In first semester college calculus, I solved most of the problems on the three-hour final exam algebraically. I didn’t need calculus for those. I showed my work, and that is what gave the professor a headache.

            Not everyone thinks alike. In high school, we received an extra credit problem, and my friend Wally Judd and I tried a solution on my mother’s kitchen table. The problem was: if one is moving a 22 foot ladder down an 8 foot hallway, and reaches a 90-degree corner, what does the minimum width of the next hallway have to be for one to get the ladder around the corner, assuming only two dimensions?

            We integrated it, and this resulted in a completely hideous algebraic expression. I said “no way” and gave up. A few weeks later, in archery class, I thought about the pivot the ends of an arrow arrow makes about its center as it curves in flight, and came up with an elegant trigonometric substitution.

            Not Wally! He factored that algebraic expression.

            We each reached the same answer using different methods.

            I did math this way in high school and college, so I only got B’s.
            Deducting points because I could run the numbers in my head?

            Homeschooling is the answer. School in its current format is hopelessly out of date anyway. It was designed to produce a functionally and superficially literate and numerate population that could participate in the rapidly industrializing western societies.

            School is a concentration camp geared for mass manufacture of a cheap product – the superficially literate and numerate cog in the industrial wheel.

            Totally and hopelessly out of date, corrosive to the soul, and crushing to the institution of family. Absolutely no need for it in today’s globalized, information and knowledge-based economy. If your child has intellectual potential, you will do a much betting developing that yourself.

            Look-n-say is almost entirely nonsense. It depends on shapes and contours rather than sounds. It is always best to use phonics, the earlier the better, and there are several interesting ways to learn “exceptions”. You can use “visuals” to explain some letter-links, using lips; e.g. E and ee. PROPER Montessori tools are OK.

            Likewise, it is quite easy to explain and teach every use (and history) of the apostrophe – only “teecher’s & text’books’s” make a mess or an ordeal of it.

            Google Leap Frog “Word Whammer” and “Fridge Phonics.” The latter teaches the sound of letters; the former, the child can put together three-letter words and it sounds out the word. Also Alphabet Pal. That’s the toys he’s had.

            He’s 12 and he STILL loves ’em. (He also has a developmental delay/slight bit of autism.) He enjoys things that give feedback.

He couldn’t even do that. And yet, you see in this video someone trying to teach these dummies algebra.

    And also notice that two of the young men featured prominently, the aforementioned skinny one and the short obese one, both of them have fathers who are or were in prison for murder. The apples didn’t roll far from the trees.

    They were both from Chicago. I live in Texas.

      I watched the Gangland series on the History Channel from my PC. The one about the New Orleans gangs at the time of hurricane Katrina was particularly enlightening.

      The New Orleans gangbangers were whisked off to Houston, TX after the rescue, and once settled in they began experiencing Texas-style law enforcement. In NO they were taken in for a certain amount of days, (I think it was 15) and if no one came in and swore out a complaint, they walked free. Naturally no one ever “snitched” so they always walked. It doesn’t work that way in Texas and they were aghast!
      The end of the program tried to whitewash it a bit, but what I took away from watching it was that mixing the two cities’ gangs, Houston and New Orleans, taught both cities’ hoods new tricks, to the more efficient destruction ability of both. Hopefully in the years since the ones who learned new tricks will have died off, “retired” or gotten permanently locked up. Seven years is a L-O-N-G time in gang life.

I guess they believe that the SAT is really a nonverbal test, and an intelligent person who never learned to read would do well; of course, the corollary is that a dumb person will never do well.

      He made reference to John Michell, English naturalist and geologist who theorized about Dark Stars (black holes).

      • I believe that a pure Democracy as we have it today is an unstable form of government. The founding fathers mentioned that democracies had a 200 year lifespan. Black form a class that is easily manipulated as a voting block and that why many in the government want more of them. The liberal party found that it has access to our wealth by promising more handouts.

        Also my white Democratic friends hate the GOP as they believe they’re just tools of big business — which they are.

            All Cleopatra silver coins are scarce to rare. The smaller denarius shown (3.5 grams, silver) is in the British Museum collection. Today I guess it would cost $5,000 to $7,500 to acquire at auction in this grade. As stated I’ve been looking for one for 3 years so they aren’t easily picked up. There are also assorted bronze coins of her (some under $200) but she struck no gold.

            The Ptolemy V tetradrachm is larger, weighing 14.2 g, more than a silver US half dollar. (I’m looking for Cleo on one of these). Crappy specimens of him sold for $200 while nice ones, better than the above brought $3,000. I’d guess about $2,000+ at auction today.

    Johnny hits 15*(4/10) people per drive by, which means that he will have to participate in 9 drive bys to shoot 50 people. However, he will have completed two drive-by shootings and be just starting the third when he has to reload. Since he only stole a single clip, he’ll only have shot 16 people when the homeboys with the UZIs’ make Swiss cheese out of him.

    2. Pony has 2 ounces of cocaine and he sells an 8 ball to Jackson for $320 and 2 grams to Billy for $85 per gram. What is the street value of the balance of the cocaine if he doesn’t cut it?

        That is all well and good, but the top Magnet schools in Chicago are barely better than the suburban high schools that have to take everybody inside their district lines.
        If you look at the demographic breakdown of the suburban schools that rank near the top of the charts in IL they are with rare exception, 70%+ white, and 90%+ white+Asian
        Oh and when Harvard is giving AA treatment to the minorities they are coming from the premiere magnet schools, not whatever the local high school that services Englewood

    It’s amazing how many black people actually believe nonsense like this. Just recently, a black girl on YouTube claimed that Greeks stole their philosophy from Egypt. I pointed out that Egyptians, to my knowledge, barely had anything beyond religious mysticism, much less philosophy at the level of the Greeks. I told her that I had read all but a couple of Plato’s dialogues and that I was quite sure they were not inspired by Egypt in any very interesting way. She insisted that Plato’s cave allegory was lifted from the Egyptians because he referenced Egyptian astronomy or something. Grasping at straws, to say the least. Eventually I had to just “let her win” because she was incapable of understanding basic logic.

    The truth of the matter is that black people have never done anything at all worth talking about, and deep down, they know it. All they can do is claim our achievements as theirs.

The schools do not teach it, the parents lack the knowledge themselves, and sadly most of the kids do not READ about it. But Change is Coming.

      Let me explain how that happened. The ancient Africans, who were very environmentally conscious, foresaw global warming will be caused by many of their inventions.
