South Africa Loses Use of Its new Gripens

Four months after admitting that 12 of its 26 Gripen jet fighters had been placed in storage because they were too expensive to operate and there were not enough qualified pilots to fly them, South African officials admitted that the maintenance contracts for all the Gripens had expired in April. That made long term use of the Gripens dangerous. This contract was with a reliable, and expensive, South African firm (Denel). The maintenance contracts pay for ongoing support for the aircraft to include updates and warnings on problems other users have encountered as well as access to manufacturer engineers and maintenance experts. Aircraft become more dangerous to operate (if they operate at all) without regular maintenance and these maintenance contracts are a critical part of that. Some South African politicians are now calling for the Gripens to be sold, as there is not likely to be sufficient money to operate them and retain qualified pilots.

Currently only about half of the remaining 14 Gripens are flyable and there are only six qualified Gripen pilots. Corruption, shrinking defense budgets, and political pressure to find more black combat pilots and technical personnel has led to the South African Air Force having fewer operational aircraft. All this has been going on for over a decade.

For example, back in 2009, the South African Air Force stopped automatically releasing data on how many hours combat pilots flew for training. When the numbers were finally obtained, it was discovered that in 2008, fighter pilots were in the air for 325 hours (less than two hours a month per pilot). In contrast, pilots on VIP flights (carrying politicians and government officials) were up there 1,932 hours. There are about fifty transports and 80 helicopters in the air force at the time, and that number has continued to shrink.

In 2009, the air force had only twenty fighter pilots and only nine Gripen fighters. The remaining 17 were delivered by 2012. In 2008, the last of the 66 Cheetah fighters (rebuilt French Mirage IIIs) were retired. In 2008, the last full year that Cheetahs were operational, fighter pilots got 2,084 hours in the air and the year before that it was 2,448 hours. It’s believed that only six of those twenty fighter pilots were competent to handle these aircraft in combat. Most competent pilots have left the air force because of the lack of flying hours. Many of the pilots remaining got in under a quota system that attempts to add more racial diversity to the air force.

Not surprisingly, many South Africans believe that the South African Air Force (SAAF) has been falling apart for years. The most obvious evidence of this is the decrepit state of aging buildings, runways, and aircraft. But the biggest problem is getting, and keeping, technical people. This is complicated by a government program to integrate previously all white institutions. This has been most difficult in areas that require a lot of technical training and education. Like pilots and aircraft maintainers.

The government has set a racial goal for SAAF pilots and wants them to be 75 percent black and 25 percent white. A lack of qualified black air force personnel means that this goal has still not been met. The morale problem started getting a lot worse back in 2005, when the three top rated graduates of pilot training school, who would normally go on to fly fighters, were told that, because they were white, they would instead fly helicopters or transports. Three less qualified black pilots would go on to fly fighters. When commanders noted the morale problem, and public outcry, they declared that it was no longer the policy to send the best pilots to fighters but to spread the best pilots around to all flying communities.

The problem here is that flying fighters is the technically most demanding job for pilots, and the best pilots only stay in the SAAF to fly fighters. If they wanted to fly helicopters or transports they could make more money, and fly more often, as civilian pilots. So the SAAF is ending up with less competent fighter pilots (which ultimately results in more accidents) and fewer, and less capable, helicopter and transport pilots as well. Since the SAAF pilots are currently selected more for their race than for their ability, the morale of most pilots will remain quite low.

A similar situation occurs in other technical specialties, like maintaining the aircraft. Fewer whites are enlisting for these jobs, and more existing techs are quitting for civilian jobs. There is also pressure on civilian airlines to integrate, but the pressure is not as great because politicians fly those airliners and want the highest quality pilots and maintainers for those aircraft.

Even with the current situation it won’t be easy getting that many black pilots, as blacks with the skills to be pilots tend to prefer better paying civilian jobs. And there aren’t many black pilots to begin with. In the long run, this won’t mean much, beyond a higher accident rate for military aircraft and some lost aircraft. This has been the case in other African countries where most, or all, air force pilots are black. South Africa has no enemies in its neighborhood and little likelihood that the SAAF would have to go to war.

South Africa is also fortunate that it has a free press. Many other nations (especially in Africa) have in the past faced similar problems with jet fighters. But these countries are usually dictatorships so details of why the jet fighters don’t fly much (or even reports that they don’t fly much) don’t get reported. But after the dictatorship falls, as they all eventually do, the sad tales of the aircraft that were too expensive to operate emerges.

          The soviet air force shot down a shitload of USAF fighters and bombers in 1950-53. There is nothing wrong with Russian pilots. They are world-class, especially when you consider the heavy crates they had to fly.

            The new MiG’s are no slouches, they can hold their own. It is as you say, the difference is their pilots. Meaning they do pretty well considering what they have to work with. Check out the American thinker story on how Russia will apply it’s laws over the rainbow people in the upcoming winter Olympics. At least their on target when it comes to the Homosexuals.

            F’ing A right! I used to fly around the former Soviet Union on old Tupelovs. Even with bald tires and questionable maintenance, those ex-military Russki pilots could put those crates down as soft as a pat on a baby’s backside.

            The definition of a good pilot is a guy who can get a pile of broken parts into the air and touch down on the numbers. Anyone off the street can drive an A-320, once they can turn it on. Not the same with those Soviet hulks. Russians are great pilots because the can handle shitty equipment. Also, Soviet aircraft are seriously over-engineered. They’re like tanks.

            Yes, but remember that originally their entire military was pi*s poor due to liquidation of capable military personnel who worked for the Tsar or had other bourgeois connections. Their only capable commander that I read about from WW2 (a generation later) was Zhukov. It took time for them to develop that expertise.

            Zhukov was the outstanding general of WW2 – its been almost forgotten today but his crushing defeat of the Japanese in 1939 probably ensured that the Japs stayed out of Hitler’s 1941 invasion of the USSR. How different the outcome could have been if the Japs had attacked Russia and occupied Vladivostok, etc.

            Hitler made a lot of mistakes which cost Germany the war, when you dig into the details. I agree completely re: the Japanese in Russia – We had to absolutely lay waste to their country before they surrendered, with more than a million men still in the field. Tough bastards back then.

          • The MiG-15 they flew in 1950-53 was light, agile and had a better rate of climb and higher ceiling than our F-86 Sabre, let alone the F-84 Thunderjet or the F-80 Shooting Star. The powered controls on the Sabre and G-suits worn by US pilots meant that the Sabre could always win in a horizontal engagement. The idea was to sucker the MiG into a turn and then roll the other way. A critical problem for the F-86 was the armament of .50″ caliber machineguns. Because airplanes were faster and had bigger turning radii in Korea, these weapons had less useful hitting power than they possessed during WW-2 (G forces and thus turn radius go up as the square of the speed). Because faster airplanes also required more structural strength, the effective impact of the bullets was lessened even farther. Finally, fights often developed at such high altitudes that a MiG-15 simply would not catch fire, even after being hosed down so thoroughly that it was streaming fuel. The F-86 did have a radar-ranging gunsight, and when the six .50″ cals were replaced with four 20mm cannon, F-86 scores improved.

            The US navy had already given up on the .50″ caliber machinegun by late WW-2 and had switched to 20mm cannon. A 20mm shell weighs about four times as much as a .50″ bullet, and carries a large explosive charge. Current 20mm anti-aircraft shells are frequently filled with HBX explosive and zirconium cubes coated with white phosphorus. Hits with these have no problems getting fires started in airplanes.

            The other issue that helped U.S. Sabre fliers was the fact that the F-86 had a defogging cabin while the MIGs did not. The Soviet pilots would sometimes have to fly blind when too quick altitude changes were made.

            The kill rates in the Korean air war were at first high for Soviets. The main reason for this is that the U.S. Air Force was still using the straight winged F-80s and the Soviets had their new MIGs which featured the new swept wing design. The superior engines, ironically were from Britain, who had given them the design that double irony, had been developed there using U.S. tax dollars. The MIGs were far from crates, but once the U.S. Air Force got its superior F-86 Sabres into the war, the kill rate corrected and it was the MIGs that got shot down in “shitloads.”

        I actually wish for little from the continent, Whites to get out safely, all blacks to stay put and those outside the dark continent repatriate themselves back, China becomes their new slave master and all Western aid stops completely.
        I guess we all just get to sit back and watch the show and say “I told you so.”

  • The Gripen is a good airplane, but with the end of the Soviet-backed hostility to South Africa and the collapse of the white government, they don’t really need fighter jets.

    If I was a a South African MoD minister, I’d think long and hard about focusing on counter-insurgency aircraft, preferably twin-turboprops like the OV-10D Bronco or the Argentine Pucara. The Atlas firm could probably build something similar. I’d stick with the Makila 1K2 engines, because their Rooivalk helicopter already uses those. The twin-boom layout of the OV-10 seems reasonable, but the guns should be in 30mm DEFA caliber, used by their old Mirage jets and mounted under and behind the cockpit, so the muzzle-flash doesn’t interfere with aim at night. Only one 30mm would be needed if it was a Hughes chain gun.

      True our country don’t really need these jets. However there was a lot of corruption involved with the purchase of these jets. Some ANC politicians wanted to buy these planes and other weapons so they can get on the gravy train.

      • A good coast guard would be my main priority as SA defense minister. Fish poaching in other nations’ EEZs is common by the Chinese. For that, I’d want commercial diesel engines for 27 knots and the Bofors 57mm or Oto-Breda 76.2mm guns. Provision for Harpoon, Exocet, Skorpioen, Penguin or SSN-25 that could be mounted later. No aluminum in the construction, and splinter protection over the engineering spaces and CIC.

          • They’re not going to be able to operate anything better in the long term. Young white families are emigrating, and the country’s future is going with them. EEZ violations like fish poaching and toxic waste dumping are a major problem in much of the developing world, and a country that can’t manage its own fisheries is missing out on a lot of revenue.

          Just look at Haiti. Every available tree in the forest has gone for firewood, every fish within outboard motor range has been harvested and the only crop they worry about is weed.

          Their entire economy is dependent on foreign aid from da White man.

          Idi was an equal-opportunity liquidator. Whites were among his targets, but weren’t central. He used firing squads to eliminate the no longer useful, and dumped them in the river where they would float around and disrupt cocktail parties. In the end, the history of Uganda, Rhodesia and South Africa will be identical. Expropriation, indigenization, murder, expulsion, economic collapse, American aid.

          Here is what Wiki says about Amin’s benign domestic policies:

          In July 1971, Lango and Atoll soldiers were massacred in the Jinja and Mbarara Barracks, and by early 1972, some 5,000 Acholi and Lango soldiers, and at least twice as many civilians, had disappeared. The victims soon came to include members of other ethnic groups, religious leaders, journalists, artists, senior bureaucrats, judges, lawyers, students and intellectuals, criminal suspects, and foreign nationals. On 4 August 1972, Amin issued a decree ordering the expulsion of the 60,000 Asians who were not Ugandan citizens (most of them held British passports). This was later amended to include all 80,000 Asians, except for professionals, such as doctors, lawyers, and teachers. A plurality of the Asians with British passports, around 30,000, emigrated to the UK. Others went to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Sweden, Tanzania, and the U.S. Amin expropriated businesses and properties belonging to the Asians and handed them over to his supporters. The businesses were mismanaged, and industries collapsed from lack of maintenance.

        Uganda was a protectorate not a colony like Kenya. There were virtually no white colonists, only Indian traders who he kicked out en masse in 1972. Most of them went to Britain or Canada. His favourite method of execution was a sledgehammer to the head – since it was so messy his prisoners were made to do it to each other.

          The main “contribution” of black US “soldiers” in WW2 was as cooks and store men, etc. The only time they were put on the frontline was in the Ardennes as this was deemed the most unlikely place for a German attack. The Germans must have known about this and therefore chose that very sector for their “Battle of the Bulge” counter-attack which, surprise, surprise, was initially very successful as the “US army” in that sector ran for their lives. Next time you watch a documentary on that look out for the German archive pictures of their “American” captives from that battle.

        He’s not a Jew. He’s just a truckler. Married to his millions and insider status in Hollywood, he’ll do anything to hold onto his current position. Even make a hack movie that distorts history. Spielberg had his Schindler’s List, so Lucas had to settle for another WW2 myth instead.

        For the record, the Tuskegee airmen were the WORST performing fighter group of the war. Their accident rate was double the other fighter groups during training, and their kill ratio was about half of other groups as well. And this was while fighting the Germans’ third string pilots in the backwater Mediterranean theatre of operations.

    Lets be clear on this – the blacks who have been put in charge of the mad-house that is the “New” S.Africa have absolutely no concept of wasting money since money is something that only whitey can produce, and in their primitive minds they know that whitey will replace it somehow. Secondly, these aircraft (and subs and frigates which are also in a state of limbo for the same reasons) were only bought in the first place because it was a good excuse for black ANC politicians to benefit from the huge bribe money always associated with 3rd world defence contracts. Finally, the game (and it is a game) going on here is the charade of blacks pretending to be the mature fully-developed adults they know they can never be – and what better fun than to possess (adult) white mans toys?

        Lots of countries buy high-end equipment mainly because major powers have these things. Chile bought surplus Leopard II main battle tanks. Brazil wants a nuclear-powered submarine for reasons unclear. Libya’s late and unlamented Kadaffy Duck was notorious for wasting money on military equipment his army couldn’t maintain. Thailand bought a light carrier from Spain and Harriers for it, but has no real naval enemies. The Nigerian navy has been notoriously bad at ship maintenance, but wanted submarines, perhaps because they were concerned about the large surface fleet Sao Tome and Principe were building. Brazil also purchased an old aircraft carrier from France, the former Foch, now 50 years old.         On the other hand, some countries have been quite wise about military purchases. Egypt has rebuilt many of their old T-55 tanks with Western equipment, powertrain and armament as the Ramses II. It produces a reasonable tank without an enormous cost, and using mainly local labor. Israel has rebuilt most of their captured T-55s as heavy troop carriers. Israel also rebuilt captured BMPs – too poorly protected for use as troop carriers – as mortar carriers, with the mortar mounted on an internal turntable and firing out through the circular hole left from removal of the turret. Indonesia bought all 16 of the former East German “Parchim” class corvettes; an archipelago that extensive needs numbers of relatively low-endurance ships for EEZ enforcement, search and rescue and patrols against piracy and smuggling (a conversion that could operate a helicopter would be useful). Surplus US Perry-class frigates have been hot sellers. Norway got decades of extra use out of old US M-24 Chafee light tanks, and many countries have modernized elderly M-41s.

        Because they’re simply not going to have to fight the Cuban army in Angola anymore, South Africa’s best choice would be a focus on counter-insurgency. The nation is descending at express elevator speed to the level of civilization the new owners can sustain, and as we have seen from the example of Zimbabwe, this isn’t very good. Their Ratel and Buffel APCs are excellent for this sort of work. A fire-support Ratel with a bigger turret mounting a 105mm gun and carrying no infantry would be rather like the US M1128 Mobile Gun System and would probably be quite valuable.

I couldn’t get past the absurdity of Jamie Foxx as a fighter pilot, cracking jokes and acting like a typical baboon while flying the world’s most advanced jet. About as believable as Samuel L Jackson as a jedi master. I won’t even think about watching that Apes on a Plane nonsense that George Lucas made about the Tuskegee airmen.

      Just watched a program about the “Great Age of Ocean Liners” in which they showed the “Queen Mary”, now a museum ship in Long Beach, CA. The film-makers joined a tour of the ship in which the official guide (dressed up as a high-ranking ships officer) was a black man who performed the tour in the most irritatingly obsequious manner – can’t explain it properly but he had all these exaggerated gestures and theatrically dragged out every word. I can only presume his performance was supposed to be humorous in a childish sort of way and a tactic designed to extract the most tips. I thought it absolutely pathetic and if I had paid to go on that tour I would have lodged a complaint with the organisers.

      The best the Axis could have done in the Med was hold at Benghazi after retaking it, and then get Malta. Rommel was a good corps commander, but otherwise overrated. He “borrowed” aircraft from Kesselring that should have been used against Malta, but squandered them. By the time he got to El Alamein, he had outrun his own supply system. The British had taken up a position between the coast and the Qatarra Depression in which they could not be outflanked on either side. By then, Rommel was forced to use too many of his tactical vehicles running supplies.

      What you are suggesting would simply be a bigger dog on a shorter leash.

        If Hitler had supplied Rommel with only a fraction of the resources he used in Barbarossa Rommel could have captured the entire Middle East and all its oil resources. And the Arabs would have welcomed them. Then the Turks would have probably joined in and they and the Germans could have invaded Russia through the Caucasus – Baku with all its oil was just over the Iranian border.

          As for Baku, the Russians so completely destroyed the petroleum installations there that it was some years after the war was over that anything there was working.

    It comes down to cognitive ability.

    For example, back in 2009, the South African Air Force stopped automatically releasing data on how many hours combat pilots flew for training. When the numbers were finally obtained, it was discovered that in 2008, fighter pilots were in the air for 325 hours (less than two hours a month per pilot). In contrast, pilots on VIP flights (carrying politicians and government officials) were up there 1,932 hours. There are about fifty transports and 80 helicopters in the air force at the time, and that number has continued to shrink.

    Good. I hope their military capabilities shrink even further. The weaker they are, the less of a threat they can be to their similarly-apeish neighbors.

    It’s believed that only six of those twenty fighter pilots were competent to handle these aircraft in combat. Most competent pilots have left the air force because of the lack of flying hours. Many of the pilots remaining got in under a quota system that attempts to add more racial diversity to the air force.

    These SA apes are too dumb to realize that diversifying their air force comprimises their national security. I’m fine with it. At least their neighbors will know that SA won’t be a credible threat from the air.

    “Technical training and education”? Aren’t those things that sub-Saharan Africans excel at?

    A similar situation occurs in other technical specialties, like maintaining the aircraft. Fewer whites are enlisting for these jobs, and more existing techs are quitting for civilian jobs. There is also pressure on civilian airlines to integrate, but the pressure is not as great because politicians fly those airliners and want the highest quality pilots and maintainers for those aircraft.

    Why not? Isn’t diversity our greatest strength? Shouldn’t a diverse workforce do a better job than a non-diverse workforce? I’m confused.

I will probably die soon out of stress and despair. I know of no one (that is not to say none exists) who is interested in at least engaging in intellectual curiosity.     Why does a jungle state need advanced fighter aircraft? Who could they possibly go to war with? What’s amazing is not that their air force is a joke, but that they actually have an air force that still has jets that fly. This puts them light-years ahead of North Korea or Iran.

    • The Iranians have actually done some quite interesting things with their air force. They have reverse-engineered the Northrop F-5E, using Russian engines, in two versions: one looks just like an F-5 and the other has twin, outward-canted tails like an F/A-18. They have also produced an air-to-air version of our old HAWK surface-to-air missile, apparently as a replacement for the Phoenix AAMs we sold them to go with their F-14 Tomcats. Don’t let the bizarre, medieval fundamentalist theocracy that runs Iran fool you; Persians are not stupid.

      As Oom Paul pointed out where the SAAF’s Swedish-made Gripens are concerned, someone was most likely bribed. That’s actually quite common in arms sales, even in developed nations. Lockheed did a truly epic bit of bribery selling their F-104 Starfighter. In bad weather with an agressive and inexperienced pilot, it was notorious for fatal crashes. The Germans called it “Erdnagel” (tent peg) and the Canadians “Widowmaker”, but the Italians and Japanese apparently liked it, calling it “Spilote” (hatpin, for the shape) and “Eiko” (glory).

    The percent of their population that can actually fly a fighter get is probably lower than 1%.

      Philippe Rushton determined that the average IQ of BLACK uni students in S.Africa was 85, which is 15 points above their average. White UNI students were also 15 points above their average (i.e., 115 IQ). Hence the proportion of blacks in SA universities is similar to their proportion in the population as a whole, thus maintaining the grand illusion that the races are equal in ability.

    According to Wikipedia South Africa’s Gripens force consists of 9 two seater aircraft and 9 single seater aircraft. So if one third of their pilots are black that works out about right.
