How Oberlin Created the Hate Crime of the Year

Michelle Malkin, National Review, August 23, 2013

Busted. Stone-cold busted. Just as I suspected, “progressive” pranksters at Oberlin College have been definitively unmasked as the perpetrators of phony campus “hate crimes” that scored international headlines in March. The blabbermouth academic administrators who helped fuel the hysteria are now running for cover.

The Associated Press, the New York Times, MSNBC, Yahoo News, and theHuffington Post were among the media outlets that trumpeted the story of supposed racism, homophobia, and anti-Semitism run amok at my alma mater. Throughout the winter, anti-black and anti-gay graffiti, swastikas, and a shadowy figure in a “KKK hood” surfaced on the tiny campus outside Cleveland, Ohio. Black Entertainment Television News decried the hate outbreaks and a “KKK sighting.”

Because of my firsthand knowledge of Oberlin’s long history of self-manufactured hate-crime incidents, the fake-hate-crime alarm bells went off immediately for me when I read the reports. Back in the 1990s, race-obsessed nutballs at Oberlin College cooked up a horrid hate-crime hoax. Asian-American students claimed that a phantom racist had spray-painted anti-Asian racial epithets on a campus landmark rock. It turned out that it was a warped Asian-American student who perpetrated the dirty deed.

Student newspapers were filled with complaints about imaginary racism. One Asian-American student accused a library worker of racism after the poor staffer asked the grievance-mongering student to lower the blinds where she was studying. A black student accused an ice-cream-shop owner of racism after he told the student she was not allowed to sit at an outside table because she hadn’t purchased any items from his store.

My suspicions about the latest “hate” crime were bolstered by police statements that the “KKK hood”–wearing menace was actually a female student wrapped in a blanket. {snip}

The orgy of self-flagellation swelled. Liberal grievance-mongers applauded the administration’s decision to shut down classes. Faculty, students, and opportunists took to the airwaves and the Internet to bemoan “white privilege,” institutional bigotry, lack of diversity, yada, yada, yada.

And now, the rest of the story. According to police reports published by Chuck Ross of the Daily Caller News Foundation this week, two students had fessed up to most of the incidents (and fellow students suspect they are responsible for all of them). The Oberlin Police Department identified the hoaxers as Dylan Bleier (a student worker bee for President Obama’s Organizing for Action and a member of the Oberlin College Democrats) and Matthew Alden. Bleier told police the pair posted inflammatory signs and a Nazi flag around campus to “joke” with and “troll” their peers.

{snip}

[Oberlin president Marvin] Krislov not only remained silent about the two pranksters, but he also stoked the fires of political correctness and helped fuel the false notion that real bigotry had pervaded the campus. The spring edition of the Oberlin College alumni magazine opened with a self-congratulatory essay from Krislov titled “A Fitting Response.”

After perversely bragging about the “national and international news” headlines on the “bias incidents [that] disrupted our campus community,” Krislov clucked that “similar things have occurred at other colleges.” Which, of course, is inadvertently true. As I’ve reported for 20 years, American college campuses are the most fertile grounds for fake hate.

Krislov then praised “students, faculty, staff, alumni and fellow Oberlin residents” who “turned hate into an opportunity to educate.” Of course, “hate” had nothing to do with it. And the police reports suggest that Krislov knew it. The rash of “intolerance” that littered the Oberlin campus was a symptom of juvenile delinquency and perverse self-delusion. Instead of examining his guilt in coddling hate-crime hoaxers, Krislov giddily promoted new efforts devoted to “strengthening the emphasis on diversity.”

There are other adults who deserve to be called out. As Cornell law professor and blogger William Jacobson, who has pressed the administration for months about the cover-up, notes: “Oberlin continues the wall of silence which delayed for months disclosure of the hoax. It’s time for Oberlin to reveal who knew what, and when, particularly as to the oversight exercised by the Board of Trustees.”

Delusional utopian thinking + Racial equalitarianism

Hate crime of the year? Is there some sort of contest going on over there?

      • And the “Hate Crime of the Year Award” goes to …..

        A Liberal!

For the 50th straight year ladies and gentlemen,
a Liberal wins Hate Crime of the Year.

But he’s such a ‘cute, innocent, little boy’ (see pic on AmRen from yesterday).

I almost didn’t read this b/c it was from NRO, but I can hack M.M. and sometimes, she’s really good.

Btw, when I say ‘good,’ – I don’t mean AmRen good. I mean, to go as far as you can go without losing your job.

Even Rush, of all people, came right out and admitted exactly that about himself yesterday, which actually surprised me that he admitted as much.
(You can read the transcript if you’d like.)

They get these kids right out of high school, most yet to fully develop frontal brain lobes, whip up a crazy fantasy driven ideological hysteria, and…this.

Pranksters? More like agents provocateurs. Didn’t Hitler do stuff like this regarding a certain fire at a certain legislative building? Progressive…

    • David Ashton

The Reichstag Fire was probably the work of a communist loony – like the murder of Dr Verwoerd and the arson attack on Sofia Cathedral.

      • Hermann Goering arranged that fire.

        • David Ashton

          So the communists claimed.

        • bob

Most historians believe that a Dutch Communist did set the fire and the Nazis used it for political gain.

          • A foreign commie doing that would have to have been out of his ever-lovin’ mind.

“Let’s see… I can stay home in tulip-land and gripe about the shipbuilding industry – or maybe the wooden shoe industry – or I can go jack with the Germans, who appear to have their s*** back together, but aren’t very happy.”

Is that your idea of a difficult choice?

  • David Ashton

We need another big book carefully documenting faked racism crimes.

    • [Guest]

The publisher would stay busy issuing addenda.

I’d like to see a website to which entries could be added as needed, perhaps daily.

  • Oil Can Harry

Last week the liberal New York Daily News had screaming, over-the-top headlines because a statue of Jackie Robinson was defaced with a swastika and “the n-word”.

The paper is even offering a $50,000 reward to find the criminal mastermind behind this alleged atrocity. It was probably a black or hispanic hoaxer.

    • sbuffalonative

The fact that there hasn’t been an arrest or a follow-up story might be an indication of who was involved.

It made it into the ‘hate crime’ statistics and the SPLC can use it in their fund raising letter so it achieved it’s goal.

  • WmarkW

This is why every campus needs a White Student Union to say “There’ve been a lot of race hoaxes on college campuses, let’s wait and see who the perps actually are.”

    • [Guest]

Also, a White Student Union at Oberlin could speak out about “hate incidents” such as those launched by Dylan Bleier and Matthew Alden. They were obviously attempting to stir up hatred. It’s just that the target was not black, Jewish, Muslim, or homosexual.

  • Spartacus

“white privilege,” institutional bigotry, lack of diversity, yada, yada, yada.”

Doesn’t America have any real problems to deal with ?

  • cecilhenry

    “My suspicions were bolstered….”

Meanwhile you write an article that attempts to re-live and reinforce the LIE while pretending to be ‘shocked’ and against the fake hate crime.

ARticle is as contemptible in its weak denunciation and denial of the motives of this fake crimes as the original crime.

    FTWR…..

    Really.

    • sbuffalonative

Which is why if we’re going to have hate crime laws they should punish hoaxes just as they punish real ‘hate crime’ and for the same reason; they demean and target a whole group of people.

      • Of course, but I suggest nobody holds their breath while waiting for that to happen.

      • Sloppo

I agree with that because victimhood status is a deadly weapon. It often doesn’t kill suddenly, but the targeted group (usually non-Jewish whites) gets gradually marginalized, pushed out of jobs and educational opportunities and forced to sacrifice family financial resources to support the families of competing and hostile peoples. The long term result is the destruction of the target group.

  • Viv Jasper

My BS detector was going crazy as soon as this story first broke. This is precisely why I am always dismissive of stories about hate crimes committed by whites. I wonder what the ratio of hoaxes to real hate crimes might be.

    • Anyone’s guess, but the ratio of hoaxes to the real McCoy at a liberal campus like Oberlin must be overwhelming. Conservative high school seniors don’t bother applying to places like Oberlin in the first place, so there’s automatically a huge selection bias from the very beginning.

  • IKantunderstand

Dang, it would appear that making up “hate” crimes is now a hobby for people. Something to do in your “spare” time. And, you want to know why? Speech and writings have become so proscribed on not only college campuses, but everywhere, that if you want to be a “rebel”, but still loved and accepted, you invent “hate crimes”. Then, when you are caught, you just claim, “Oh, I was trying to draw attention to the blah blah wrong with our society.” Hey, word to the incipient rebels out there: Being a leftist, is no longer revolutionary! You are part of the movement that was rebellious in the sixties, and, is now, sadly, mainstream, and BORING.

    • It’s just a modern equivalent of the medieval “witch” hunt and Inquisition, with “racism” standing in for “witchcraft” and “heresy”.

Political Correctness is a religion; make no mistake. As with a religion, the basic assumptions may not be challenged, and so are thus dogma, and total hostility is reserved for those seen as insufficiently pious.

Wasn’t it released that he had terminal cancer?

Truth is, he IS cancer itself.

    • He was born on October 3, 1954, which makes him 58. The picture below, from Wikipedia was taken in 2007. He’s shedding weight like a sugar cube in boiling water.

Say it loud and say it proud: $harpton is a pimp!

Want to know why the black community can’t pull itself up? In addition to the anti-social trash they embrace as “culture,” look at the pimps and grifters they have leading them: Obama, $harpton, Winfrey and Jack$on. If these are the best they can do for leadership, they should stop now and beg to be allowed back onto the plantations.

  • [Guest]

It never seems to get mentioned, but the purpose of these faked “hate incidents” is to incite hatred against the “opposites” of the supposed targets. Dylan Bleier and Matthew Alden and all their allies in Oberlin administration and the media were aiming to stir up hatred. Toward whom? Toward people who are not black, not Jewish, not Muslim, and not homosexual.

These were “hate incidents.” But apparently that’s fine and dandy because the target was something OTHER than black, Jewish, Muslim, and/or homosexual. Who’s left?

It’s an obvious point, but Malkin doesn’t make it, and I don’t recall having seen any other commentator on the plentiful supply of faked “hate incidents” make it either.

    • The object is demonization of white, gentile heterosexuals in order to further the Marxist narrative. People like you and me are too busy with things like careers, family, hobbies, friends and the like to provide the Marxists with the incidents they need, so they stage these themselves.

      • The punishment should be the same.

      • [Guest]

That’s what I was trying to say, only you said it better.

      • [Guest]

That’s what I was trying to say, only I used more words and was less clear.

  • bob

This wasn’t hard to figure out as Oberlin is a 100% far left-wing communist college.

  • Truthseeker

This is the state of the diversity racket in 2013: Creating the appearance of a problem so that they can feel good about themselves for fighting it.

  • Tarczan

Oberlin has very bright students, and the message here is that even they can be mislead and demagogued. If they can be this easily manipulated, how easy is it for the rest of society?

    • ShermanTMcCoy

Bright, perhaps, but thoroughly indoctrinated by their families and society.

Realist parents who do not want their children to meet the same fate must stay engaged with their children, teaching them to question everything.

      • MBlanc46

They pretty much cry out to be bamboozled.

  • Jenkem Huffington

$PLC used to be famous for this sort of stunt. A few swastikas get painted on a synagogue and they have 10,000 fundraising solicitation letters ready to mail out to that area the next day.
Really, I’d wager 95+ percent of this sort of nonsense is some sort of agent provocateur or hoax. Truth be told, most white folks who are sick of the other tribes destroying our country are too damn busy working to support all the browns to have time for cross burnings and the like.

  • MartelC

The left NEEDS an enemy -the willingness to label Zimmerman white and project all sorts of leftist fantasies on him , or the fact that bout 90% of these ‘hate crimes’ are made up illustrates that.

  • SFLBIB

Maybe fabricating a phony “hate crime” should itself be a hate crime.

    • “Maybe”?

    • Reverend Bacon

Maybe the advent of these silly hate crime laws, which can turn a minor infraction into an Orwellian thought-crime felony, have caused all these hate hoaxes.
And maybe all the liberals and their flock, who never bother to read that Tawana Brawley wasn’t really raped, pushed through the thought-crime legislation because they were solving problems that didn’t exist.
And maybe, like with Oberlin’s president here, the liberals knew all along that Tawana Brawley, Crystal Mangum, Sharmeka Moffett, Trayvon Martin’s breeder and sperm donor, and the Agoura Hills High hoaxers were all lying from the start.

      • SFLBIB

I have no doubt about it. I think liberal thought starts not with reality but with an ideology. When reality doesn’t fit whatever their ideology, then it is reality that must be wrong and must be spun to fit.

When Tawana Brawley, a young black woman in New York City, invented the story that she had been raped by white men, her cause was loudly championed by people who acted as if the truth or falsity of her story was irrelevant. And after it was shown to be false, her role in the story of black oppression was defended by some who wrote that even if she did fake the crime, her ‘condition’ was the expression of ‘some’ crime against her that entitled her to be theobject of our grieving.

  • frederickdixon

Imagine the agony they must undergo whenever black people apply to join and they have to forgo the opportunity of diversifying their community. I wonder what excuses they dream up?

  • I like curbside recycling. Waste Management brought it to my part of Colorado Springs five years ago or thereabouts. The plastic, glass, paper, cardboard and steel all get picked up. I crush the aluminum and sell that to Wise Recycling. Kitchen scraps go into a compost bucket in the garage and this gets buried in the planter barrels twice a year, except bones which get boiled for soup stock before being crushed and put in the compost bucket. Wal Mart takes plastic bags for recycling. For bags that contained food, I wash the food residue out and pour that rinse water on the vegetable garden before letting them dry and recycling them. It’s amazing how little genuine garbage a family of three produces when they have a mind. We put trash out in empty supermarket bags, which are the perfect size to use as wastebasket liners. The handles even tie nicely.

Empty plastic screwtop jars get washed out and reused. I like being organized, but I’m not very good at it. Having lots of (free) containers I can stick labels onto helps. When one cracks, the plastic can still be recycled.

What gripes me about these folks is that they’re hypocrites who think living with groids and greasers is good for everyone else – especially everyone else’s kids – but not them or their own kids.

    • Reverend Bacon

Actually, they probably think that the three-to-four sigma blacks that come to Oberlin are just perfect for their kids with whom to associate. They can pretend to be tolerant, and that the 3-sigma blacks are “just like everyone else,” meaning they aren’t that much dumber than all the one-to-two sigma whites at Oberlin, most of whom were bitterly disappointed that they didn’t get into, say, Cornell, which is in the Bleier’s back yard.
They rely on “diversity programs” at elite colleges to filter out all but the high-functioning blacks, who on average aren’t that much more violent than the rest of the student body.
They would love it if the kids became friends with one of the blacks, so that they can pretend (to themselves, too, probably) that they practice what they preach.
They ain’t gonna go to Da Bronx and start “chillin’ wit da homies,” though. Reality is not for liberals.

  • Brutus

“Hate had nothing to do with it”? “Hate crime hoaxes” are not “hate crime hoaxes.” They are crimes motivated by hatred for Whites.

  • gemjunior

That is sick. These are the future of our country? They want to be a victim and no evil whites are conveniently appearing to rape the young black ladies and spread feces on them, or beat up innocent gay youngsters. Oh, the hate! I can’t take it, it’s so rare that it must be invented in order to continue as our National Narrative on Racial Hoax Crimes by Hate Wishers. So sick.

  • cablegirls

Well anyway, I’d like to nominate Marvin Krislov for Academic Douchebag of the Year and encourage broad exposure of his coverup.

    • Harold Barnett

Perhaps Dylan Bleier could rattle some bars by painting swastikas on the houses of his good Jewish neighbors back home in his lily-white EcoVillage in Ithaca. Rather than trying to terrify the blacks and Asians in his college, he could take his war home to his own people. Given the extreme racial and ethnic segregation of EcoVillage, it would be a good place to stat, don’t you think?

  • MBlanc46

I lived in a housing cooperative for many years. There wouldn’t be any Section 8 because co-ops are ownership not rental entities. Discriminating against a potential buyer on the basis of race would certainly be illegal. It’s done of course, because people never say, we’re denying your application because of your race. But cooperatives are not exempt from the civil rights act.
