Even on the brink of political ruin, Republicans are quibbling about limited government, fiscal conservatism, and “true conservative principles.” Well, unless someone has General Pinochet on ice, none of these are serious proposals. In fact, given that fiscal ruin is basically certain given universal suffrage, we might as well lean into it. It’s not financial nihilism — it’s about getting serious about the nature of the system we live under and preparing for what comes next.
