A 25-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times on Monday, September 8th, in her home in Poitiers, France, and later died from her injuries. The prime suspect is the young woman’s former partner, a political refugee from Afghanistan who was residing in France legally.
Le Figaro reports that the 35-year-old Afghan is still on the run. The woman, who has been identified as “Inès,” had filed five complaints with the police for harassment before she was killed.
In a press release on Thursday, September 11th, the Poitiers prosecutor’s office confirmed that the victim had first filed a complaint on July 10th for harassment by a spouse or partner, intentional violence by a spouse or partner, and sexual offenses. “The victim subsequently renewed her concerns by filing additional complaints with the police four times, on July 17, August 13, August 19, and August 28,” prosecutor Rachel Bray added.
According to French media, the victim was part of an association helping migrants, in particular with administrative procedures. Her family told Le Figaro that it was through this association that she met the man who would later kill her. Inès broke up with her partner in April, but he was unwilling to accept her decision and started following and harassing the young woman on the street, at work, and at home.
Inès’s relatives blame the police for what happened, saying that they “did not take seriously” her complaints. Her brother Yacine told Le Figaro: “Our fight is not only against the man who killed her, but also against the system.”
She filed a complaint several times, and nothing was done. For me, there are two culprits: the police and the individual.
