Italy’s Giorgia Meloni Elected President of European Conservatives and Reformists

Giorgia Meloni, leader of Italy’s far-right Brothers of Italy, was elected president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party on Monday.

The appointment makes Meloni the only woman to lead both a European and an Italian party at the same time, as well as the first Italian woman to lead a European party family, La Repubblica reported. {snip}

Under Meloni, who has gained a reputation as the rising star of Italy’s right, the Brothers of Italy managed to wrest the leftist region of Marche from the center-left Democratic Party in Italy’s regional elections earlier this month.
