Math and Science Teams Win 3 UIL State Championships

Highland Park Independent School District, May 8, 2019

For the third consecutive year, three HPHS teams have won 5A Championships at the UIL State Academic Meet. The teams competed May 2-4 at UT-Austin, after winning regional championships in April.

Members of the Number Sense State Championship team included:

    • Richard Luo – First Place Individual
    • Amy Li – Fourth Place Individual
    • Stacy Wang – Sixth Place Individual
    • Parth Nandekar – 10th Place Individual

The Mathematics State Championship team included members:

    • Amy Li – First Place Individual, with a perfect score
    • Richard Luo – Third Place Individual
    • Justin Li – Seventh Place Individual
    • Stacy Wang – Ninth Place Individual

Both teams are coached by HPHS math teacher Andy Speir.

The Science team won its 11th state championship under the coaching of HPHS chemistry teacher Wenzen Chuang, and included:

    • Michael Zhan –
      • Second Place Individual
      • Second Place Chemistry
      • Second Place Physics
    • Richard Luo – Third Place Individual
    • Amy Li – Fourth Place Individual
    • Raymond Zou – Eighth Place Individual

Chuang currently holds the La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas Distinguished Chair in Science at HPHS, established through the Highland Park Education Foundation in 2017.

“We are so proud of the success of the Math, Science, and Number Sense teams this year,” HPHS Principal Walter Kelly said. “Their state championships demonstrate a consistent dedication to learning at the highest level and demonstrates an inherent love of learning.”
