A former South Dade Senior High School student has won a $49.3 million judgment against the geometry teacher who had sex with her and sent her lewd texts.

Tuesday’s verdict by a Miami-Dade civil court jury merely decided the damages against Bresnniel Jansen Mones, 35. Mones, who pleaded guilty to three counts of having sex with a minor and two counts of sending her lewd texts, already had been found liable by default. The Miami-Dade County School Board earlier reached a settlement with the 20-year-old young woman, a 16-year-old sophomore when Mones had sex with her.

The lawsuit, filed in 2014, accused the School Board of neglect in failing to protect her from a teacher who the lawsuit alleged had a known history of improper behavior.

The suit says Mones sent text messages to her in 2013 that went from about school to about sex, including photos of his genitals. During the fall, the suit says, Mones forced oral sex on C.R.R. and had intercourse with her on his desk in December 2013.

After Mones’ guilty pleas, he served six months in prison and was released in June. His original probation period, 10 years, already has been reduced to eight. He lives in South Miami-Dade as a registered sex offender.
