Firefighters Group, NAACP Raise Concerns About All-White Recruit Class at BWI

A national black firefighters association and African-American leaders in Anne Arundel County are criticizing state officials for allowing an all-white class of firefighter recruits at BWI Marshall Airport.

The new class of firefighters, which started on the job last month, is composed of nine white men, airport spokesman Jonathan Dean confirmed. With their arrival, the Maryland Aviation Administration’s 89-person fire and rescue department became 26 percent minority and women, and 13 percent African-American, he said.

Officials with the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People say African-Americans, Hispanics and women are underrepresented.

“The concern is the fact that there’s a large segment of the Baltimore community that has been denied the opportunity of employment,” said James Hill, president of the black firefighters association.

“It all comes back to diversity,” said Gerald Stansbury, president of the Maryland State Conference of the NAACP. “The NAACP is concerned because here we are in 2014, and we’re still not able to provide a diverse force over at BWI.”

Dean said the aviation administration has a “commitment to fair and equal employment” and is “taking steps to help ensure more diverse candidates” are considered when new hires are selected.

However, the airport needed to hire quickly for the most recent class, given recent vacancies, and the most qualified candidates were the nine men selected, Dean said.

“Most of them had significant airport firefighting experience and all of them had extensive firefighting experience,” Dean said.

The complaints about the new class dial back enthusiasm the association and the NAACP expressed at the end of last year, when Gregory Lawrence, an official with the black firefighters association, was named acting chief of the airport fire and rescue department—the first African-American to hold the position.

Lawrence, named to the acting role at BWI in November, had helped to lead criticism months prior of a mostly white recruit class at the Anne Arundel County Fire Department–an uproar that led to the unveiling of a new diversity plan for that department.

Carl Snowden, a member of the local Caucus of African American Leaders and the legal redress chairman of the county NAACP branch, said while the airport was named after civil rights pioneer and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in 2005, its fire department has not lived up to Marshall’s legacy.

“We just found it incredible that this would be happening, particularly at an airport that is named after Thurgood Marshall,” Snowden said. “It’s just unacceptable.”

Dean said the airport’s fire department is looking at diversity initiatives and best practices nationwide that will inform the next recruitment.

    There’s something you should know about blacks. They will NEVER be satisfied. They are like spoiled brats…nothing you do for them is enough. Spike Lee is sitting in his $30 million house with a courtyard complaining about whitey. Black Harvard students are complaining there are not many thugs at Harvard. Who in the hell complains about being a Harvard student? Blacks complain about diversity yet the NBA is almost 90% black. College basketball is at least 75% black, college football is about 70% black and the NFL is more like 75% black. Blacks are only 13% of the population! THIRTEEN!

    Why don’t we ever hear about needing more whitey? No push to get more whites in basketball, football, black schools, BET, etc. Watch ESPN? Blacks are almost always overrepresented. Many shows have 3 black hosts and 1 nerdy looking white guy. Same for TNT sports. Same for Fox Sports 1. I mean, what more do they really want? They already have a system that LEGALLY discriminates against evil whitey! They should be celebrating in the streets! Could you imagine their slave ancestors 200 years ago being told some day there would be a policy where you would be preferred over a white guy even with much worse qualifications? They’d think you were joking.

    Blacks and whites will never get along. Spike Lee was right about that part. Bring back segregation. Time to shake hands with black separatists and encourage staying on our own side of the tracks again. Let them do what they want and stay out of our business and we will do what we want and stay out of theirs. Problem solved.

    These people are clinically insane. Denied the opportunity? What did the airport do, refuse to give out applications to non Whites?

      In my visits to Baltimore I have noticed a lot of burned out row houses boarded up in the black areas of town. I suspect they may be better at starting fires than putting them out.

          Nope just had a couple of sick kids that needed surgery at Johns Hopkins. I was shocked at how bad the neighborhood was immediately outside the grounds of a world class hospital. The guards told us that they recommended we ask for an escort to the parking lot even during the day due to a lot of robberies.

    Lies, lies, damn lies. The truth is that absolutely no qualified minority has been denied the opportunity to be employed as a firefighter. If anything, there has likely been an outreach to minorities and a lowering of standards to get them in the ranks. Even after all that there are either no minorities interested or qualified, but that end result can’t be blamed on lack of opportunity or discrimination.

    Someone here made the point a while back that no one complained about the lack of racial and gender diversity of the Arizona forest firefighters who were trapped and killed by an out-of-control fire (in 2012?). I think it’s a valid concern to wonder if the non-white, non-male recruits will put their lives on the line when the time comes.

      The AZ firefighter tragedy happened on June 30, 2013. And you make a very good point regarding those young men putting their lives on the line. I just don’t see blacks doing that.

      I wonder what is the % of black forest rangers? I’ve spent a large chunk of every summer of my life at various National Forests and Parks and have never yet seen a black ranger. (A few strapping females that looked like they could carry my husband and I both at the same time) but no blacks.

    Diversity is our greatest strength, not White muscle or brain power. I would support laws banning White males from be able to apply for any government job whether federal or state. Thats the least we can do for the sin of existing. These laws are coming anyway so why wait? The bonus would be the joy of seeing the government fall to pieces as the last Whites are forced out.

    If the NAACP spent one tenth the amount of time and effort that they waste on lawsuits, whining and complaining and directed that effort towards tutoring blacks, they might actually help a few get some advancement.

    Instead, it’s the same ol’, blame Whitey game. (yawn).

    Funny, how in over sixty years the NAACP never complained that their leadership was not black. From its inception until the mid-seventies all NAACP presidents were Jews and I don’t think they have ever considered themselves “colored”.

    Thank God they are all white people’s lives will be saved. Blacks are too dumb to realize if they force their own 80 IQ people on the team these same 80 IQ ers will be the ones showing up to save their loved ones. When I call the police or emergency services I directly state I want white people to respond. It is your right and they have to comply. Especially in domestic cases etc or sexual assault.

    The Maryland aviation’s Administration of 89 person fire and rescue department is 13 percent Black, which happens to be their percentage of the national population. Yet this is not enough. This is why Black organizations and leftists want to get rid of Civil Service testing. They can appoint all minorities to these jobs and eliminate all White applicants. The Republican party will gladly go along with this since only working class Whites will be affected by this and they are of no concern to the GOP.

    “It’s just unacceptable.” They don’t seem to have the stones to protest that they’re underrepresented in stuff like brain surgery and rocket science. I bet most blacks are smart enough to demand a white doctor, since at least they know for sure that the whites didn’t get there by fiat.

    They also don’t seem to have a problem with overrepresentation in jobs like city administrators and pro basketball players.

    How many here have ever been turned down a firefighting job because they are White? I was. 1990. Los Angeles. 6’6″, a lean 235, the required Fire Science course. They would not accept my app. By that I mean I tried to hand it to them and they refused and told me why.

      In 1989 I had my first job at a local fast-food chain, in a Detroit suburb. I was the only White employee. I might add that this was along a bus route.

      I didn’t know what to do much of the time, I kept asking, what do I do next…you know, I was a bit clueless, my first job and everything. Everyone else kept screwing around–shuckin’ and jivin’.

      My dad was hounding me about why I didn’t get more hours. Truthfully I thought a 3- or 4-hour shift was torture. Finally he went down there and asked the manager, and her reply: “Black girls are better workers than White girls, she doesn’t deserve more hours.”

      She had no idea who she was messing with. Dad didn’t let it drop, he filed a complaint on my behalf. The upshot of it was, the manager got transferred and I got another job at that chain but in another location.

      That was the beginning of my awakening, I think–the realization that blacks can be racist too. Now I realize that they are the most *hatefully* racist.

        If so, he might have had a reason for saying that black girls are better “workers” than white girls.

        He might have had a different definition of “work.”

    It seems to me that being an airport fireman is a specialty. So, per NAACP and black fire association, it is more important to have blacks than the most experienced and qualified, and so potential lives at stake in a plane crash are of no consequence even though presumably they and their family, friends all fly.

    Every time this issue comes up, I say the same thing. Minority group members who could qualify as firefighters are making other choices. They are in law enforcement and the military. Or they are choosing other civil service or “suit and tie” careers instead. If you want minority firefighters, locate the people who are qualified, and there are some, and get them to apply. If they won’t apply, then it’s not whitey’s fault. It’s that simple.
