Death Threats and Denial for Woman Who Showed College Athletes Struggle to Read

Sara Ganim, CNN, January 10, 2014

The death threats, Mary Willingham expected.

More shocking is that the University of North Carolina is now disavowing her research as a whistle-blower–research that showed between 8% and 10% of the school’s football and basketball players are reading below a third-grade level.

UNC issued a statement Wednesday night saying it did not believe Willingham’s account of a basketball player who could not read or write.

It went on: “University officials can’t comment on the other statistical claims mentioned in the story because they have not seen that data. University officials have asked for that data, but those requests have not been met.”

As well as questioning UNC many times about the story before publication, CNN has also detailed Willingham’s research.

And purported e-mail exchanges obtained by CNN since August show that Willingham did share her findings at least twice–once with Executive Vice Provost James W. Dean Jr., and once with a member of a university committee on academics and athletics.

In addition, Willingham says her research on the students in the athletics programs that make money for the university was done based on screenings that the university itself paid for. And, she says, she has gotten permission from the university several times since 2008 to access those findings to continue her research.

“It’s already available to them,” Willingham said. “It’s in their system. . . . They have all the data and more. It belongs to them, and they paid a lot of money for it.”

Last year, when CNN asked UNC for comment on Willingham’s research, officials initially denied knowing about it, and said: “Such analysis is not part of her job duties at the university.”

Then, after being shown the e-mails, a spokesperson admitted that Willingham did share her findings and did have permission from the university to do the research in the first place, and said a meeting with Willingham was being scheduled.

Since CNN’s report, Willingham said she’s gotten four death threats, and more than 30 other alarming messages.

One can bet many or most of the threats were issued by those with Stormfront IDs. Many of those probably have moderating privileges there too.

    • Lt_Greyman_NVA

Ummm no. Robbie (or is it Rabbi?) the threats are to cover up the truth that even adult negros that make millions operate at a 3rd grade reading level and should never have been admitted to the school. The collegiate FL just had a scandal where it was exposed that most of the players who were in “remedial” classes were not in class at all, but on the field. An 80 I.Q. negro at Princeton is still going to operate at 80 I.Q. The ones who are angry about it are the players and their friends and relatives, who worry that they gravy train might be stopping because “De’Marcatus Johnson” might get taken off first string because of an expose’ like this.

But you knew this, your little trip into “Stormfront Land” was just to try to take the eye off the ball.

      • c684570

His name is probably Rabbi Cheny and not Robbie.

      • Stan D Mute

Wow. Was it really just too hard to click on his name and see his comment history if you were unsure whether his comment here was sarcasm? Or did the question of whether it was sarcasm never occur? Did the premise of SF’ers, perhaps the most blatantly and violently racist group in the race realist sphere, *complaining* about exposure of Afro low IQ college athletics fraud not strike you as nonsensical? If somebody here types out a post claiming SF’ers are opening a new chapter of b’nai brith or writing a massive donation check to $PLC, are you going to buy into that one too?

Come on Lt. You’ve been around the block enough to know the real social equality cultists comments are identifiable by the flecks of spittle and frothy foam from their mouths as they spew sheer hatred for all whites. If nothing else, Robbie’s post was too well written and concise to have been the work of a deranged anti-white nutjob.

    • odious liberal

You are moron, SF could given a damn less about illiterate bantu.

      • jambi19

Cheney is using sarcasm guys. Of course SF could care less about the precious little chimpanzees jumping around at UNC.

        • CharlesFinley

          The caring continuum.

        • Robbie Cheney has a [harmless] black-belt in sarcasm.

        • c684570

It didn’t really sound like sarcasm.

          • Stan D Mute

That’s the very best kind of sarcasm!

        • sbuffalonative

          My vote is for sarcasm.

    • I have a Stormfront ID, though I am not active there. They wish me a happy birthday each year. Why are you laying into them?

      • dd121

Robbie doesn’t have many posts. It makes me suspicious.

      • Stan D Mute

Do you agree that Stormfront is kind of like that crusty old uncle who lacks a filter between brain and mouth? That most of the time he harms our cause much more than he helps it?

On the other hand, SF may provide a pressure relief safety valve for the more emotional and less intellectual racially aware whites. SF may be the vent that prevents ill-conceived violent outbursts.

All I have against them is that they make a very easy target for the anti-white activists to use in attempting to paint us all with the same brush (ie anti-intellectual, crude, crass, vulgar, and violent) which I think does harm our cause.

    • John Smith

C’mon now “Robbie”. Keep your eye on the ball. The ISSUE is the deplorable rate at which college blacks read and write.

As for the threats, it is the usual suspects…the so-called “anti-racists” and leftists.

It seems that more of your type is now posting on this site.

      • “The ISSUE is the deplorable rate at which college blacks read and write.”

        Rate? Surely you meant “levels”.

        • Edruezzi

The problem here is college sports itself. With the NCAAA a multibillion dollar industry these colleges will do anything to get the gifted athletes in the inner city. They really don’t care.

    • John

You are so, so, so full of unpleasant substances. What does Stormfront, a pro white forum, have to do with the woman discussed in this article? Obviously, you’ve been getting your concept of “Stormfront” from MSM or something similar. I’ve been a member there for over 6 years, read it daily, and can assure you that her position and her truthful stance would overwhelmingly be supported there by both members and moderators. I think you’re going to need a crowbar to get that foot out of your mouth at this point.

    • TheAntidote

SF? lol. Don’t talk like a chump. You will see this story repeated over and over at SF and the mania humor sites. In the immortal words of an Illinois Governor, “Eeeeeh, I’ve got this thing…and it’s effin’ goooolden.”

      • NM156

By the way, that Governor would be the Hon. Rod Blagojevich of Illinois, who has at least a decade of time left to do in a minimum-security Federal prison in Colorado.

    • Andy

Huh? Why would moderators from a white nationalist site make death threats against someone who did a study that reflects poorly on black achievement?

      • borogirl54

I think that the death threats would have come from the New Black Panther Party, The Nation of Islam and the like.

        • John_HD

More likely from sniveling, self-hating, white ethno-masochists. Seems to be just their style.

        • blight14

          Or the ever-benevolent ADL/$PLC………….

    • Max Krakah

why would stormfront readers be upset that she let the cat out of the bag that black athletes in college can’t read?

    • NeanderthalDNA

Please confirm or deny sarcastic intent. If “B”, then I advise all posters here to utterly ignore you. If “A”, might want to work on technique or at least stick around long enough to address the firestorm.

    • me

      • Funruffian

Actually, those are the sentiments of the really stupid Anti-Whites. The smart ones would never openly declare such hate-filled rhetoric. They know the Whites have the talent and skill and they want to exploit it to their advantage. They know that without Whites, society would decline rapidly.

      • NeanderthalDNA

If he hadn’t generated so many responses I’d call for a “moderation”. As it is the record is out there.

Is there any way to peruse a person’s record of commentary? There must be…

        • me

Just click on his ‘alias’. His profile will pop right up!

          • NeanderthalDNA

That was easy as sin! I think he’s a sarcasm hound based on what I’ve seen. Meh…

    • Stan D Mute

Nah, my vote is as usual, for the Amish. Although in this case it might have been those darn Mennonites. Always up to no good those two. Committing the crime us regular Americans just won’t commit anymore. Lately, however, I’ve come to suspect yet a third culprit in many of the more outrageous acts. I’m beginning to believe that this flood of “knock-out” attacks, rapes, street robberies (“Apple picking”), and the widespread illiteracy of collegiate athletes is the work of …

      Wait for it …

The Quakers! Yes, the Quakers. And the mainstream media is covering it up to prevent discriminatory backlash and “Quakism”. Folks, if you see a group of young Quakers out in your daily travels, RUN! Better to be called a “Quakist” than to become their next victim.

      • Whitetrashgang

I never did like Quaker Oatmeal something just not right.

        • I can’t stand Quaker Oatmeal with sugar and milk, but it is great with sriracha sauce and melted cheese in it.

    • Why would a SFer threaten a researcher for coming to a conclusion with which they agree?

That makes about as much sense as me feeding Jared Taylor a knuckle sandwich.

    • brior

Your post makes no sense, what is your

inference to stormfront on the issue of athletes ability to read when they are 23 years old?

      • Robbie Cheney

‘Stormfront’ is clearly a ‘falsefront’ and has been for quite some time. They quit even trying to hide the fact as late as 2012. I still read SF on a regular basis as it can be quite informative. Unfortunately, it is what it is.

  • dd121

I hope she didn’t really expect the liberals who run these institutions to have any integrity? Some life-lessons come hard.

  • bigone4u

In my 30 years of experience in the academy, university administrators are the biggest liars and sociopaths on the face of the planet. This poor woman professor is going to pay for her honesty. Later today, I am going to look her up and send her an email of support and maybe send a nasty one to the lying Executive Vice Provost.

  • Whitetrashgang

I doubt its 10 percent more like 40-50 percent. As for telling the truth, well who can these days?

    • DNA Explains It All

No way that 10% is anywhere near correct.

      • Andy

Only about 3% of American blacks are incapable of doing better than that. It says “below third grade”, so we’re talking people with IQs no higher than the mid-forties. Either college athletes tend to be less intelligent than the general black population, or they aren’t doing as well as they could be.

        • Jim Barlow

I’m not so sure – an IQ of 40 basically implies the individual cannot even groom themselves. IQ of 70 is the cutoff for MR.

I’d believe that 10% cannot read and upwards of the remaining 3/4 of them operate at a pre-highschool level of cognition.

    • toldev

No, I think that 10% is pretty accurate. You have to keep in mind that she is only counting blacks who read below the 3rd grade level. The average black adult has about the same reading ability as white child in the 5th grade. If she had defined illiteracy as reading below a 6th grade level, than these numbers would have been 50% or maybe a little more or less.

To put it in a little more perspective: most major newspapers are written at about the 8th grade level. If she had used that as a cut off, over 90% of blacks could not pass that standard. But that brings the question: if a student can not even read an article in the Times, what are they doing in college in the first place?

      • John_HD

“But that brings the question: if a student can not even read an article in the Times, what are they doing in college in the first place?”

Generating revenue for it. Oh, and improving it because everybody knows that diversity is our greatest strength (and don’t ask how, you dirty racist).

    • John_HD

You are correct. The CNN article downplayed the scope of idiocy by citing only the 10% below 4th grade figure. The article I read in the Daily Mail of the UK also stated that 60 percent were between fourth and eight grade level.

Ms Willingham looked at 183 revenue sports players at the UNC between 2004 and 2012, and found that between eight and 10 per cent read below fourth grade level and 60 per cent between fourth and eighth grade level.

    • Guest

The piece states that 8 to 10 % were below a 3rd grade level. That doesn’t indicate that the others were at college level. Maybe 5th grade level.

  • That is unfortunate. Without intellectual honesty, academia has nothing whatever going for it.

    • Kit Ingoldby

Many academic organisations have been systems of sucking government funds while propagating leftist attitudes and opinions that enhance the power of the government.

A corrupt relationship that acts as a parasite on wider society.

    • Yes indeed. Without intellectual honesty, the institution of academia is in severe trouble, along with the society it is in. For a long time the West has depended on significant parts of academia having intellectual honesty. That is far from true today, and the strength of the West is genuinely undermined. Really. This is not make believe.

    • Ograf

Are you speaking of the honesty that mike (aka martin luther) king was practicing when he plagiarized most of his doctoral thesis ?

      • King was morally disgusting on so many other levels that his having plagiarized his dissertation is simply the chopped onion in the stew: one ingredient among many. Ironically, it was a black graduate student researching King for his own dissertation who detected the plagiarism – and reported it. Some useful standard of honesty apparently still exists.

    • Stan D Mute

Academia hasn’t had intellectual honesty in my lifetime. It’s purpose is propaganda and indoctrination. Once fully indoctrinated, a trainee (“student” is a bit of an exaggeration) gets his Party membership papers (“diploma”) and off he goes to fight “white privilege” wherever he might imagine it.

      • I was in science and engineering, so it was a bit different. Either a new capacitor works when tested or it shorts right away, and nobody can blame “racism”, or “sexism” for this. Instead we looked for reasons like conductive oxygen vacancies in the crystal lattice.

  • MekongDelta69

    Truth = Death threats

And she’s actually shocked that a leftist university disavowed her research?!?

    Oh brother…

  • Garrett Brown

Well, we knew this was going to happen when we read the original article. Any truth that outs Bantus for what they are will face serious repercussions.

    • I have been calling them “Afritards” for quite some years, but fortunately I have no employer who can fire me.

      • DNA Explains It All

I really don’t have a customer that would take the least bit of an issue with my views, and speak of them regularly. In fact I have a couple customers that I would say are WAY harsher on our dusky brethren than I, often after being forced by EEOC BS to keep one or two around.

      • Garrett Brown

        I just call them negroes

        • Stan D Mute

I use “colored” when in polite company and anything from “sh!tstains” to “negroes” to “pavement apes” with family and friends.

          • Garrett Brown

Pavement apes ,now that’s a good one.

      • Whitetrashgang

They should rename Africa Afritard, the typical African would not even notice

        • “Afritardistan”.

Whenever I want to make a place seem even more inferior than it obviously already is, I add the “stan” suffix to the end: “Denverstan” has a nice ring to it.

          • dodger

The land of the low IQ.

  • odious liberal

I figured probably they would use a voodoo curse in keeping with TNB.

  • Puggg

Read the original article, you’ll find out that the ones that aren’t death threats are accusing her of “hate speech.”

So serious truthful social science research is “hate” because it tells the truth about dumb black jocks.

    • Max Krakah

to blacks, a mirror is hateful

      • Stan D Mute

That is a good insight and one that deserves some deep thought. All but the very dumbest negroes know that there is something VERY wrong with their race. And living in a majority white (or soon majority mestizo) country puts this fact very much in their faces. Everything that reminds them they are negroes elicits the rage response.

    • Stan D Mute

Of course! Just as anything factual that casts the negro in bad light is labeled “hate fact.” The CDC says negroes are 13X as likely to murder as whites? “Hate fact”!!

  • borogirl54

I am not surprised by this at all. Instead of having these “students” who will not be able to graduate from the University, the NFL should start a developmental league for those students who cannot complete college. At least they would get paid and would still have a chance to make it to the NFL.

    • MBlanc46

The NFL and the NBA should form minor leagues and institutions of higher education should provide student athletics for student athletes.

    • Stan D Mute

      Who said they won’t graduate?

  • Spartacus

    Iu iz wayciss !

  • Homo_Occidentalis

Sub-Saharan Blacks never developed or adopted their own alphabet, despite countless centuries of contact with Egyptian, Roman, Arab, and Portuguese sailors and traders. I believe there is a genetic reason for this. It is only through the most contrived of means that blacks are kept somewhat literate today. If whites were to disappear tomorrow, the American negro would quickly revert to a pre-literate state.

    • Haven’t many of them already done this?

      • So CAL Snowman

Ebonics is basically evidence of this. Before long they will resort to clicking and chirping as american schools continue to “fail” this benevolent race.

        • They already end almost every sentence with “gnome sayin?”, which has thus made the phrase into meaningless noise, so why not barking or other animal cries?

    • Andy

The peoples of the Horn of Africa actually did develop their own alphabet (Ge’ez), descended from early Middle Eastern ones like ours is. Both they and some Sahelian peoples adopted the Arabic alphabet quite a while before European colonization (in the latter case with a lot of help from the Arabs). Generally speaking, two things determined the level that society reached in precolonial sub-Sahran Africa: how much super-Saharan blood a group had, and how many super-Saharans it was in contact with. The most successful West Africans are part white (Hausa, Fulani, Mande, and Igbo), while the most successful East Africans are dark-skinned Caucasoids whose ancestors made their way to Asia and then backtracked.

    • Jim Barlow

      I completely agree.

I’d also conclude that, even though blacks only make up 13% of our country, this propensity of theirs is still enough to significantly debilitate our education and healthcare systems.

I believe their inability to incorporate into society is at the core of many of the issues we are currently facing with regards to our economy, etc.

  • libertarian1234

I’m guessing here, but I’m almost willing to bet the majority of the entire student body of black males in the US can’t do much better than 1st year high school in reading, writing and math and near zero in the sciences. Without AA in entry and grading probably more than half of them wouldn’t be there today.

If Congress passed a law which required qualification testing of athletes in government funded universities, I’m pretty sure the majority of players would be white almost overnight.

    • Andy

If every black male lived up to his full mental potential, the majority would still not get past a seventh or eighth grade level. Plenty of black males have or find things to do besides hit the books.

      • Whitetrashgang

Yeah I guess courses in rape and sitting on your sofa on your lawn all day should be high school classes.

  • Luca

If 8 to 10% are below a third grade level than probably 75 to 90% are reading below a seventh grade level.

Now let’s look at mathematics, sciences and then let’s look at IQ

Ya know what? Let’s not even go through this exercise because we know the outcome.

And so these institutions of higher learning are basically liberal diploma mills and the kids today wonder why they can’t get a job upon graduation.

    • Reverend Bacon

One does wonder why they care. Did anyone expect Secretariat to read above the third grade level?

      • Anglokraut

Secretariat knew he was a horse, and everyone else knew he was a horse. If Negroes were raised and trained like Secretariat, they’d be a lot happier because they wouldn’t be expected to do what is simply beyond their race.

        • Reverend Bacon

I laughed out loud. Probably because you are so right.

  • MartelC

this is as much a story about america’s over-obsession with games as it is race.

  • It appears that the tacit goal of Willingham’s “research” was to sweep ugly facts under the rug.

She’s refused to play along. Good for her.

  • John K

It seems that in America, ignorance is bliss. People will overlook stupidity to watch an overpaid thug dribble or carry a ball.

    • Anglo

Right. They make heros of these Black thugs. There’s so much money (and money corrupts) in college sports, especially football and basketball.
As part of my working career, I worked for county government. I can attest that all of the absolute idiot phone calls I received concerning any government services or any problems were all from Negroes, without exception. How do I know they were Negroes? I’ve lived in the deep south all my life; all White southerners know a Negro (sight unseen) by their intonation and linguistic form. They simply don’t sound like White people, and they cannot speak as White people.

  • tickyul

The little story is very analogous to the utter delusional state of denial that many Libs have about Urban Americans…excuses, denial, blame-shifting….on and on and on!!!

  • MBlanc46

Of course, they’re going to turn on her. It’s what bureaucrats who get caught do.

  • Troy Swonger

Correct me if I am wrong. IQ is a measure of learning potential and not acquired education. All of these liberals that claim poorly performing blacks are a victim of a poor education system or a system that is “biased” or “has left them behind” are full of it. A lot of poor kids of all colors go through the public education system everyday and excel because they look and act respectable, stay out of trouble, and work their tails off to get good grades. Then they can get the higher education they need to succeed on their own merits. If kids of any color choose not to succeed, they have no reason to play the victim/race card. I am sick and tired of these self-hating White liberals on other websites. It is fun to go back and forth with these idiots, alternet is my favorite. I encourage any of you to check it out, it uses the same Disqus format, so it is really easy. These people don’t understand logic, reason, or obvious facts. I hate to say it, but I fear a large portion of the White population is already a lost cause.

    • Rosenmops

There are a lot of people at Reddit that are idiots, too. At another site I was arguing with people at I was told that fact don’t matter! They just make up their own facts.

    • Sloppo

Thanks for the heads up. I like this web site, but expressing my opinion here is usually a little bit like preaching to the choir. I think it makes a bigger difference when we preach to the “sinners”. I like to visit this place for a good dose of logic and reason when the other places seem too crazy.

  • Funruffian

If Shontay and Day’Shawn get admitted into a University solely based on their athletic prowess, the school still has to make the effort of covering up for their truancy. Naturally, I am inclined to assume that ringers are hired to take exams on their behalf. This scandal has been in practice for decades. Ask any TA who has to grade those college Blue Books. They can tell you that there are numerous grammatical errors, misspelled words and poor writing continuity. But if the TA and his/her professor are obliged to ignore those blue Books and give those athletes the passing grade if the school is unable to sneak in a ringer.

  • There are various issues with all races (various genetic groupings), good, bad, and interpretable in various ways. It is natural for people to come up with name-calling for things they are angry about. Science and logic has priority over name-calling, in terms of hard truth. But name-calling is a way that humans express a lot of things in very a brief amount of words.
The researcher in the article had a fairly neutral statement, no name-calling. A very small percentage of athletes at the school had 3rd grade reading skills.
What makes us so disgusted is how often academia and other institutions in the West as well as various crazies do real damage to such a researcher. That is why we are angry.

  • JohnEngelman

Athletes who read at or below a third grade level are not victims of a failed education system. They failed in the education system.

    • In a rational nation, these illiterate “afawetes” would be ridiculed, rather than defended with all the vitriol that has been directed against the whistle-blower in this case.

      • Jack Burton

I have no doubt that Sharpton and Jackson are reading and writing at the elementary level, yet they’re on national TV representing American blacks and are authority figures.

Sharpton ran for president and he still mispronounces common words.

  • Sloppo

In 2009, attorney United States General Eric Holder called the American people “essentially a nation of cowards” for failing to openly discuss the issue of race. This case provides a good example of why Eric Holder was correct in his assessment. This woman didn’t even name the race of the “mentally challenged” athletes, but she’s still getting death threats from terrorists because she spoke truthfully about their academic abilities. People in the US must stop condemning people who tell the truth, or we’ll never be able to meet Eric Holder’s standards. Somebody needs to bring this case to Eric’s attention so he can use the full power of the US Department of Justice to fight anti-truth terrorism.

    • Willingham didn’t name the race of the individual “afawetes” because she didn’t need to do so. Further, she can defend herself against her accusers by saying that the race of a functionally-illiterate college “student” is completely irrelevant. A university is by definition an academic environment, and not a place for overgrown third-graders.

  • Max Krakah

Right, there is an absence of ethical thinking amongst the eskimos.

  • Jack Burton

That’s because 8-10% of them have IQs of children.

  • Jack Burton

They left out the slightly higher grade levels of 4th and 5th grade level being the remainder of them.

To make WNs look like a bunch of loons. You know, agent provocateurs.

    • “To make WNs look like a bunch of loons. You know, agent provocateurs.”

      I don’t follow your logic.

  • Keeping instructions simple makes sense on one level, because military equipment includes dangerous items like land mines and hand grenades. Users have to get things right with these every time.

She came to the “wrong” conclusion in her study and was banished to appease the gods of Cultural Marxism. That’s about how things work on the modern day Animal Farm. I hope this has been some sort of awakening for her.

  • Vercingetorix

I don’t really disagree with your lawyer friends, but as always it’s amazing how threatening the truth is and how our enemies react to it when someone brings it to light.

    • If we were merely wrong, the Cultural Marxists wouldn’t freak out to such an extent. As Spartacus once pointed out by way of example, nobody becomes this incensed when some poor fool announces that the earth is flat.

      • Vercingetorix

have you heard of satoshi kanazawa ? if you haven’t, his story is worth a look. i sent him an email of encouragement a while back and he actually responded and expressed his thanks.

  • Stan D Mute

Better late reply than never I guess .. I just saw this.

Our “muscle” should be Johnny Law. The dark masses can have the criminal niche. If and when things turn REALLY bad, remember the VAST majority of actual combat veterans are white and rural white America is so ridiculously well armed that the government is already terrified and doing all it can to propagandize “gun control.” That mob of sideways shooting Afros with two “nines”, one AK, and half a box of shells for each will be controlled by ONE farmer’s wife with a 30-06 and a scope.

And really, does anyone other than Stormfronters think it would come to that? It won’t. As long as ESPN has feetsball and bassetball on, as long as there are reruns of Seinfeld and CSI to watch, white America will sit on the couch and do NOTHING while the nation becomes Brazil.
