Nelson Mandela Memorial: Empty Seats Embarrass South Africa

Neil Tweedie, Telegraph (London), December 10, 2013

It was supposed to be standing room only, but the memorial service held to honour the life of Nelson Mandela was remarkable for the large number of South Africans who failed to turn up.

Tens of thousands of seats in the venue, the FNB football stadium in Johannesburg, remained empty throughout five hours of eulogy. Even at the height of the service, only two thirds of seats were taken, a major embarrassment for the government of South Africa, which had billed it as the centrepiece of a week of events marking the death of Mandela.

Soon after the turnstiles to the 95,000-seater stadium were unlocked at 6am, it became clear that the flood of people expected by organisers would be less than torrential. With the 11am start of the ceremony approaching, huge swathes of the stadium were still empty, a point emphasised by the bright orange colour of the seats.

The poor attendance figure was blamed on a combination of factors, including unusually cold and wet weather, and disruption to travel caused by security road blocks on the approaches to the stadium. But the primary responsibility was laid at the feet of Jacob Zuma, president of South Africa, who had refused to have the day declared a national holiday. People in Johannesburg trying to get to work were faced with a severe shortage of buses, the vehicles having been commandeered for shuttle services to and from the stadium.

The memorial service was also marked by a noticeable lack of white participants, denting South Africa’s claim to be a fully integrated ‘Rainbow Nation’, at ease with itself two decades after the fall of apartheid.

Tessa Stovie, one of the few white members of the audience, said: “It’s probably the rain more than anything but a lot of people have found it impossible to get time off, which is a shame.”

People leaving the stadium were shivering as they left.

“It’s really cold and we’re not used to it,” said Grace Zwane, 39, a quality controller. Swazi Tshabalala, 37, agreed that the weather was cause of empty seats. “We enjoyed it anyway,” he said.

“It was brilliant apart from the rain,” said Mlungisi Lamola, 21, a student. “There was an energy from the crowd that was fantastic.”

All expressed their adoration for President Barack Obama, citing his speech as the highlight of the day. “He reminds us of Madiba [Mandela],” said Viola Maliti, 37, a judge’s secretary. “He may not have done much for Africa yet but there’s still time.”

Thato Makapa, 36, summed up the reason for the booing and jeering that bedevilled President Zuma during the event.

“Corruption,” he said. “How can he stand on a podium and talk about our Madiba?”

Do they really expect the remaining Afrikaners to show up? I think not.

    • Sick of it

“We’re here to support the guy who called for all of us to die and who’s government has impoverished so many of our people because of our race.”

Yeah, it just wouldn’t make sense.

  • sbuffalonative

It was supposed to be standing room only, but the memorial service held to honour the life of Nelson Mandela was remarkable for the large number of South Africans who failed to turn up.

The Drudge headline predicted the funeral would be bigger than that of Churchill.

On the evening news I noticed two things. There were few whites and the media outlets made sure they interviewed jubilant whites in attendance.

The propagate never stops. The need to create a false reality is on-going.

    • John K

Those whites were likely paid to be there.

      • nativist

“Jubilant whites”? The ones I saw looked decidedly apprehensive.
One had the impression that they had been persuaded it would be wise for
        them to be present.

        • ms_anthro

Not pictured: the gasoline-filled tires stacked menacingly nearby.

    • bilderbuster

FOX showed the empty seats while the reporter was saying the stadium was full.

  • Jenny Star

The entire event was a joke, including our president acting like a teenage girl with the selfie picture and the fake interpreter for the deaf who was hired by incompetent event staff. A fitting tribute.

    • Svigor

Schnitt had a sound bite of the schizophrenic pseudo-interpreter on his show. It was instructive. I wish more people could experience the glib sociopathy of blacks like that. The guy is non compis mentis, but sounded roughly as competent, convincing, and self-confident as your average black preacher.

      • marula

Please don’t knock it, he was the best of thousands of applicants for the job!

  • Puggg

A lot of empty seats was a blessing in disguise for this event.

Imagine if the house was full, and full of blacks. Imagine all the typical black behavior that would have busted out. Even if there wouldn’t have been any fights, shootings, stabbings, murders, there would have been a lot of general all around jumping around and fooling around and childish behavior.

    • Alexandra1973

You get at least two together you’ll still see monkeyshines.

    • bilderbuster

Imagine how much havoc a few flaming tires could have caused in the stands?
Winnie should have been in charge of entertainment at such a fitting tribute.
Necklace a few witch doctors & let the festivities begin!

      It’s an old African proverb:

The staging and ceremonies for Mandela were a perfect demonstration of the problems with South Africa and why apartheid was deemed necessary to protect whites legitimate interests in THEIR civilization and future.

This remains the issue ever now as this past week showed.

  • MikeofAges

In his own way and manner, when events put him on the world stage, Nelson Mandela manned up. Barack Obama has three years left, but don’t hold your breath.

    • Just wait until Obama dies. He’s probably already arranged a funeral train with Amtrak to take his corpse all over the country.

      • MikeofAges

In that case, he’s the black Gerald Ford. LOL

        • IstvanIN

Ford had a simple, for a state, funeral.

          • MikeofAges

Funeral may have been. But he took the grand tour, so to speak.

          • IstvanIN

I guess I am missing the point of your comment. I always found Gerald Ford to be a good and decent man and a fine President, a man who rose to the occasion when called to serve and did what he thought was best for the nation despite the effect it would have on his election prospects (pardoning Nixon). To compare him in any way to Obummer seems, well, wrong.

          • MikeofAges

Ford was limited in some very definite ways. In office, he always did his best and tried to be, as you noted, “a good and decent man”. He was patriot also in the best sense of the term. At a critical time, he was able to translate his positives and his prestige within Washington circles into effective leadership within and outside of the political system. That was his legacy.

Beyond being the indispensable man during a troubled moment, he was still Gerald Ford. You don’t want to berate him, but he wasn’t the guy for the long haul in the presidential office.

          • Jimmy was an improvement?

          • MikeofAges

No way. But a lot of people thought he would be, at the time.

          • obot

He did much less damage than Obozo, Bush I & II, or Clinton

          • Pro_Whitey

Sorry, I normally agree with you, but Ford was a boob, even if it was right to pardon Nixon (I happen to believe that Nixon was blindsided by his underlings, but in retrospect the idea that he would have been impeached and criminally convicted for hardball politics and spin doctoring seems laughable). Ford was like his running mate Dole, a tax collector for the welfare state, a Bush before we had the Bushes. Uncle Ronnie definitely had his faults and mistakes (e.g., the immigration amnesty), but he was a giant compared to the pygmies of Ford and the Bushes.

          • obot

Ford was your typical Republican politician. Better than any democrat, but not what was needed.

      • dukem1

Gotta imagine some set-aside contractor pitching a train to Hawaii.

  • Druid

Betwen o’bama, mooshell and the sign languge jerk, this who thing was as funny as a barrel full of monkeys.

    • borogirl54

      I agree.

    • So CAL Snowman

No matter what, Africans always reduce themselves to a spectacle.

    • Romulus

      A stadium full of monkeys.

  • Whitetrashgang

Well you could of filled the stadium with all the white people killed by ANC violence. Anyways as long as blacks get to sing and dance its all good.

    • Svigor

Blacks never need permission for that. Put them in a jail cell and they’ll be clapping and jiving before long.

      • Whitetrashgang

Shucking and jiving the only real black invention. Well okay chicken necking.

  • Whirlwinder

Why would white South Africans go to a black communist memorial service? Are you people stuck on stupid?

    • gemjunior

They sure are stuck on stupid. Or perhaps we should enjoy the torture and murder inflicted on us and then ignored by everyone in the world? Negros.

  • Luca

I just simply couldn’t make it.

I had to reorganize my sock drawer and clip my nose hairs.

    Sorry, but priorities are priorities.

    • Whitetrashgang

I had to take a dump and walk the dog.Although whenever my dog does number 2 I will think of that dead communist.

    • Romulus

Excellent. You had me laughing aloud!

    • bilderbuster

Yeah my goldfish had the sniffles.

  • Ragehol .

Why would a White person attend that?

You can just feel black race rioting in the air.

    • Svigor

Good point. According to Derbyshire’s “The Talk: Non-black Version”, a very logically- and sensibly-argued guide for dealing with blacks, non-blacks should avoid large congregations of blacks.

Sounds like good advice to me.

      • Sick of it

Especially in the murder capital of the world.

    • I have a feeling that if the stands were filled, there would a “wilding” event.

  • JohnEngelman

The memorial service was also marked by a noticeable lack of white participants.

    – Neil Tweedie, Telegraph (London), December 10, 2013

Maybe they were mugged on the way to the church.

    • IstvanIN

The whites who would have shown up were probably murdered.

      • bilderbuster

Amy Biehl & her other “White” anti-apartheid friends were there in spirit so no one could see them. Those seats weren’t really empty.

      • dukem1

A memorial necklacing to honor his memory.

      • gemjunior

That’s exactly what would have happened. Any whites who would go to that would be insane. Or liberal. Is there any difference, really?

  • Strike_Team

A lot of enterprising Zulus were out burglarizing homes, that’s why there was a small turnout. Ask Desmond Tutu.

    • Katherine McChesney

Maybe that was black Santa Clause.

      • Strike_Team

Blacks and browns deserve Krampus at Christmas. If you’re not familiar with Krampus, look him up, lol.

  • Tessa Stovie, one of the few white members of the audience…

We had a term for her type in West Virginia. Don’t hear it in Chicago.

    • Alexandra1973

Is one of the words “lover”?

      • MBlanc46

Ah, now I get it. It’s not often said aloud in Chicago, but there’s no doubt that it’s often muttered under the breath.

        • Romulus

I say it out loud with pure unadulterated disgust. Sometimes in Latin or German, but mostly English.

          • How do you say it in Latin or German?

          • dukem1

            In pig Latin I’d say ud-may estler-wray.

          • Romulus

Nigrum amanti and schwarz liebhaber respectively. This is a friends translation and I’m geussing,, not in street vernacular.

      • Romulus

Yes! The same pejorative is used in VA and PA.

    • Jackryanvb

      Mud shark is better.

  • A Freespeechzone

Given the violence against Whites in South Africa and seeing the frenzy of blacks at this memorial; Whites in attendance would likely be attacked.

Besides, Mandela did little during his time as President to stem the tide of unprovoked violence, including murder perpetrated on Whites.

As in America, smart Whites avoid large gatherings of negroes… could be fatal.

    • “… avoid large gatherings of negroes …”

I avoid small ones too. I’m still listening to James Brown but that doesn’t mean I want them for neighbors.

  • John K

A lot of empty seats and a lot of empty suits, and a Marxist posing as the president of the United States eulogizing a fellow Marxist.

  • kenfrombayside

In Nazi Germany, the national religion was to worship Hitler as a deity and the denigration non-Aryan’s. In the US, our nation religion is to worship blacks as a noble, albeit oppressed, people. If you go to mets game at New York’s Citifield, you go through the Jackie Robinson rotunda. Robinson had nothing to do with mets yet he is worshipped as a living god. Maybe America’s black worshipping obsession is a reason why the no talent Beyoncé had been elevated. Society has to through off the black yoke.

    • I agree. Our main problem is what I have come to call Sacred Blackness. The attitude that blacks can do no wrong is just as destructive as … well … the attitude that whites can do no right.

  • me

Mandela was an evil man. No need to point out this monster’s heinous acts. The devil danced with glee as the elite fools praised Mandela’s evil name. The rest of the world will forget him within a month, and his rotting corpse will be a testimony of the transience of evil. The only memorial service I want to see in South Africa is the one honoring and mourning the savage murders of the Boers, and the necklaceing of all of the racist Negro scum that killed them.

    • “The only memorial service I want to see in South Africa is the one honoring and mourning the savage murders of the Boers, and the necklaceing of all of the racist
      Negroes that killed them.”

The killings are ongoing. Why any whites choose to remain is a mystery to me. Yes, they were born there. Yes, it’s their home — but can they ever really feel at home there?

I’ll fight if cornered, otherwise I simply walk/move away … but I wouldn’t just sit there.

  • Daytime TV is the worst …..

Considering what’s on TV, going to a hospital is like going to a red light district.

Most blacks are too self-centered to show up for any funeral besides their own.

  • “The memorial was a fiasco because it was organised by Blacks!”

You may very well be right. Over the course of my 70 years I’ve eaten at probably dozens of McDonald’s restaurants managed/staffed by blacks. Only one of them was run efficiently. The rest were jokes.

    • GeneticsareDestiny

Fast food restaurants run by blacks are absolutely hilarious in their gross incompetency. You could run a successful reality television show set in one.

      Some potential areas of entertainment:
-Trying to figure out which frycook got Laquisha pregnant for the third time
-How large of a cut of the total drug sales is the manager taking?
-Where is Tyrone? He shows up 2 hours late for his shift every day.
-Watching the dishwashers organize a fake holdup of the restaurant with full complicity of the manager
-Marijuana breaks (like a normal smoking break)
-How many chicken nuggets can Jerome stuff into his mouth in full view of the customers at once?

      And lots more.

    • ShermanTMcCoy

You must enjoy the taste of monkey spit.

      • No, it’s just that I used to do a lot of traveling and welcomed the low price and hoped-for uniform food quality.

        • ShermanTMcCoy

Just kidding, Lex. But I won’t eat in a black run establishment, any more than I would let a black “dentist” work on my teeth.

          • If they had signs saying “black run” I would not stop off but of course they never do. But once in I was not going to leave.

It doesn’t matter now. I no longer travel.

  • gemjunior

Wow. I am glad that you were released and that your stent is in good shape. I hope everything is going well.

  • gemjunior

We had better start hitting back, all together, en masse, everywhere. None of us want to go to jail – which is why everyone needs to do it together. This is a picture that should not have ever taken place. I am sick when I see this.

    • ms_anthro

Your reaction is exactly why we need to see these horrible images, and pass them on to other Whites. We are being exterminated, our children, women, and elderly hunted for sport by these packs of roving jackals.

We fight back or we die; it’s that simple.

      • ms_anthro

^ The above reply originally called them “jackals” and not “people” but Comrade Moderator’s tender ministrations have ensured that I can’t edit the post back. We can’t compare them to predatory pack animals now?

After Desmond Tutu left the Mandela funeral he went back to his Cape Town home. Only to find, that while he was busy praising Mandela’s media induced legacy of make believe. Mandela’s real legacy was busy robbing his house! That’s right, Desmond Tutu’s home was burglarized while he was attending Mandela’s funeral. Which, as far as I’m concerned is absolutely hysterical, and entirely appropriate given the circumstances. I guess God really does have an ironic sense of humor after all.

  • ShermanTMcCoy

Mandiba. Like Manible? As in baboon fang?

  • Pro_Whitey

I like the comment of the judge’s secretary who says that BO has not yet done much for Africa, but there’s still time. Hey, wench, he’s supposed to be doing stuff for Americans who pay his salary and his lifestyle. Man, half a world a way and we get the same entitlement mentality.

    • Brian

Gibsmedat is like Esperanto to blacks.

  • Jackryanvb

Now Mandela is a good man… A good Communist… As the only good Communist is a dead Communist. Communists know this, and though they claim to be Athiests, they work hard to keep the Communists’ spirit alive as “saints”, idols to be worshipped, thus the statues of Lenin, Martin Luther King now Mandela. We know the American Christian religious Right is weak and cowardly when they allow these false idols of dead Communists to be erected and respected.

  • Jesse_from_Sweden

Reminds me of an old joke.

A tourist to Sweden was walking around in a sunny Stockholm and saw only blacks and middle-easterners on the streets. No whites anywhere.

So he asked “But this is Sweden, where are all the swedes?”
And a man on the street answered him “it’s just early afternoon, they are all at work”.
