A man was killed and his blind wife wounded at their Kameelfontein smallholding outside Pretoria, police said on Thursday.
“Sybrand van Dyk, 57, and his 32-year-old wife Magna, who is completely blind, were relaxing at home on Wednesday evening when one of their dogs became agitated and ran towards a perimeter fence,” said police spokesperson Inspector Percy Morokane.
Van Dyk went to see what was going on.
“His wife later reported hearing someone saying ‘staan vas’ [stand still] before hearing a gunshot,” Morokane said.
She was wounded in the leg.
The couple’s employees raised the alarm and police were summoned.
Morokane said Van Dyk died of a chest wound.
Magna van Dyk was taken to Montana Hospital for treatment.
No arrests have yet been made.
