Four Teens Charged With Murder in ‘Unthinkable’ Killing of 4-Year-Old, CMPD Says

Mark Price, Charlotte Observer, October 1, 2026

Four teens have been charged with murder in connection with the drive-by killing of a 4-year-old Charlotte boy, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. A fifth person, a 22-year-old Charlotte man, is accused of being an accessory after the fact in the death of Caleb Flax on Sunday, Sept. 20, police say.

The four teens, ranging in age from 16 to 17, were in a stolen vehicle when they drove along Grassy Patch Lane at 3 a.m., indiscriminately firing shots into four homes, police say.

Nine adults and five juveniles were inside those houses at the time. Caleb was fatally shot as he slept, and an adult in one of the homes was wounded, police said.

The investigation into the shootings is ongoing, and includes the recovery of “a second vehicle of interest” on Sept. 30 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, officials said. Investigators have not said how that vehicle is related to the case.
