The altercation began earlier in the day on Oct. 16, when the victim was sitting in the school cafeteria with his girlfriend during lunch. Authorities said the teen stepped in after noticing several students throwing carrots at a female classmate. After a brief verbal exchange with two boys, the victim tried to cool down the tension and walked away from the area with his girlfriend.

Later that afternoon, deputies were called to an off-campus pedestrian tunnel leading away from the school grounds. According to investigators, the victim was walking toward his car when 16-year-old Joandiel Gomez Ruiz struck him. Eight other teens quickly joined in, repeatedly punching the victim in the face and head before leaving him bloodied on the pavement.
