Man Whose Birth Was Recognised as a Miracle by Vatican Accused of Double Shooting

A man whose birth was recognised as a ‘miracle’ by the Vatican is wanted by police over a double shooting.

Tyquan Johnson had registered no pulse or breath for over 65 minutes on the day he was born in 2007 when his doctor, Juan Sánchez-Esteban, prayed for 19th century Spanish priest Salvador Valera Parra to intervene – and the baby’s heart unexpectedly started beating again.

His birth was formally recognised as an official medical miracle by Pope Leo XIV last year to advance the process of Father Valera being made a saint. Johnson, now aged 19, was arrested at a flat in Virginia, US on Wednesday morning after two men were injured in a shooting in Rhode Island.

Johnson was identified as a suspect, with a warrant issued for assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm in a compact area. His arrest on Wednesday was carried out by US Marshals, federal enforcement officers who track down suspects who cross state lines.

Johnson made the headlines last year when the Vatican Pope Leo XIV officially recognised his dramatic 2007 medical recovery as a miracle. He was born three weeks premature after his mother suffered complications during pregnancy, and stopped breathing immediately after delivery.
