DHS Ends Deportation Protections for Yemenis in US

Rebecca Beitsch, The Hill, February 13, 2026

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Friday moved to end deportation protections for people from Yemen, the 13th country from which the Trump administration has struck the status.

The move leaves just four countries that the administration has not sought to end what is known as temporary protected status (TPS), which bars immigration agencies from deporting nationals back to countries experiencing a natural disaster or civil unrest.

Roughly 1,400 Yemenis in the U.S are protected from deportation under TPS.

“After reviewing conditions in the country and consulting with appropriate U.S. government agencies, I determined that Yemen no longer meets the law’s requirements to be designated for Temporary Protected Status,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a release.

“Allowing TPS Yemen beneficiaries to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interest,” she added. “TPS was designed to be temporary, and this administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent. We are prioritizing our national security interests and putting America first.”

Yemeni citizens have been continually protected under TPS since 2015.
