KU to Remove DEI Roles and Pronouns in Compliance With Kansas Regents Order

Nick Sloan, KMBC, July 22, 2025

The University of Kansas is notifying employees that they must remove gender-identifying pronouns from official communications as part of the school’s efforts to comply with a state directive eliminating most diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts.

In a message to faculty and staff, Chancellor Douglas Girod and other leaders said the university has already addressed most elements of the Kansas Board of Regents’ directive, which follows a legislative budget eliminating DEI initiatives at state agencies.

The final change, removing gender-identifying pronouns and “gender ideology” from official university communications, is required to be completed by July 31.
