Following the announcement of Author Jared Taylor’s visit to Colorado Mesa University, other students and clubs have come together to plan what they’re describing as a ‘counter-narrative’ event.
On March 11, dozens of students gathered in the University Center to plan the “Mav Unity Event.” Organizers say the goal of this event is to foster solidarity and celebrate diversity.
“There’s a lot of emotion, ideas, and thoughts on the upcoming speaking event,” said Alex Austin, an organizer of the event. “I figured that this is like the best way to show that this is what the school is really about and kind of showing our passion in a way that is constructive and can actually bolster our school community and sort of live on.”
The event’s Action Plan shares that the event is about “bringing people together, not pushing them apart”.
During an off-camera interview with a member of Western Culture Club – the club that invited Taylor to speak on campus – from earlier this week, they said, “If I can have my right to free speech, you should have your right to free speech. I ask if they would be non-violent.”
Organizers emphasized to students, faculty, and staff in attendance that this event would not be a protest.
