European Leaders Urged to Strengthen ‘Minimalist’ Approach to Mediterranean Migration Crisis

Nick Cumming-Bruce, New York Times, April 23, 2015

United Nations officials joined a leading relief agency on Thursday in exhorting European leaders to improve their planned response to the Mediterranean migration crisis and address root causes of the surge of people risking death at sea to reach Europe.

“A tragedy of epic proportions is unfolding in the Mediterranean,” they said in a statement released in Geneva, as European ministers prepared to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis in Brussels.

“The European Union response needs to go beyond the present minimalist approach in the 10 Point Plan on Migration.” The European ministers agreed to that plan on Monday.

The statement was issued by António Guterres, the United Nations high commissioner for refugees; Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, its high commissioner for human rights; Peter Sutherland, its special representative for international migration and development; and William L. Swing, director general of the International Organization for Migration, a 157-member intergovernmental group based in Geneva.

Their plea reflected what one United Nations official called an attempt to influence a debate that appeared to be driven by short-term political expediency at the expense of humanitarian principles.

A European 10-point plan outlined at the start of the week called for enhanced search and rescue efforts in the Mediterranean, but put the emphasis on border protection and action against traffickers rather than addressing the causes of the crisis or the plight of migrants.

“The worry clearly is that the European response doesn’t look as if it will be sufficient by a long way and we will see more deaths,” said a United Nations official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment. “If you think you can close the gates to people fleeing war and repression, then you are clinging to a fantasy.”

More than 219,000 people crossed the Mediterranean seeking entry to Europe in 2014, a record. {snip}

The U.N. statement on Thursday called on Europe to begin a “robust, proactive and well-resourced” search and rescue mission in the Mediterranean, to create channels for safe and regular migration and to make a firm commitment to take in significantly higher numbers of refugees.

The fake humanitarianism is a cover for mass invasion. The UN has many member-states responsible for mass-murder, ethnic conflict, coerced population dispersal, migration problems and the west needs no lectures on moral responsibility.

    • Westerners have no responsibility to save the entire world. Their only responsibility is to save their own civilisation and that is already difficult enough.

Let’s take a simple example. If you focus on saving others from drowning while you are drowning yourself, then what is the point of focusing on saving others?

Saving yourself first is a moral imperative. First worry about your own safety, and after that you may worry about that of others, but only if they pose no threat.

        Well put.

Spot on. I couldn’t have expressed it better than that!

      • De Doc

The Immigration Gumballs demo by one immigration control advocate long ago dispelled the notion that America can save the world through open borders. All that is accomplished in that scenario is the degradation and destruction of your own lands. But, idealists are rarely deterred by facts and greedy business folks are surely never moved by the plight of those (John and Jane Q. Taxpayer), who pay the long term price of these destructive policies.

When the Brits sent in their North African savages into Italy, they raped their way up and down the Peninsula.

      • David Ashton

No support, approval or excuses from me over this, nor any comment about Italian warfare against north Africans. I was not born until after WW2 started, but have agreed since with most of what Oswald Mosley, General Fuller and Pat Buchanan have said about it. “Allied” rape of “Axis” women was one of many horrors at the end of the war. I do not want more Africans in Italy, Britain or elsewhere in Europe.

      • frederickdixon

What North African savages exactly? As far as I am aware the British Forces in Italy consisted of the all-White, all-British 8th Army, although there were certainly some Polish units attached. As for “raping their way up and down the Peninsula”, utter nonsense – the British Army was probably the most restrained in it’s treatment of civilians of any Army in history. I see you pretend to a Spanish name; perhaps you are thinking of the Moroccan forces used by Franco in the Spanish civil war.

  • Sure, flood on in. Europe has lots of room.

Japan, Israel and South Korea are just some nations that have “closed the gates to people fleeing war and repression” so those countries must be “clinging to a fantasy”.

“If you think you can close the gates to people fleeing war and repression, then you are clinging to a fantasy.”

Israel did. The wall they built across the border with Egypt has been very successful.

The fantasy is that immigrants from Africa benefit European citizens.

  • Luca

There are over 50 countries on the continent of Africa.

Why do they always go north and cross the dangerous Mediterranean?

    Gee, that’s a tough one.

    • George Moriarty

But some flee to South Africa, hoping to pick up on some of the remaining legacy of a white society. But shock-horror, SA blacks don’t want these new arrivals. In fact I understand South African blacks have been quite violent towards them. Their attitude has been described as xenophobic and I am certain that if these blacks had the means they too would erect a wall.
I think it is just basic human nature to protect ones own nation from invasion, it has been the main cause of war in times past.

      • Cindy

“In fact I understand South African blacks have been quite violent towards them.”
Whites used to react this way to invaders too. Back before the disease of White Guilt took over. We’re over-civilized and it’s destroying us.

      • dd47

Even then the bottom line is that they hope that South Africa will provide a Western-standard of living. The key point is always the term “Western”. Non-Whites will always aspire for a White standard of living- in the case of South Africa, foolishly believing the Africans could preserve it.

Hence why cars, paved roads, modern street lights (the Chinese are to be credited with the original concept), mobile phones, computers, the internet, etc. can be found all around the world no matter how rabidly anti-European its inhabitants are.

I think that a lot of anti-Europeanism stems from envy. The various excuses they use to try to justify it are just ways to make it less mentally taxing on the mind- hating the only people that are the reason why you even have modern clothes must do wonders on one’s sanity.

        • George Moriarty

There seems to be a mental attitude throughout the 3rd world as well as the UN, that all these things you have mentioned above automatically happen because a society is white. This includes paved roads, medical systems, universities, law & order and a viable financial system.
They don’t seem to realise that these things take time, ingenuity and a lot of hard work.
I also wonder if your president fully understands this or will he just continue to print money and increase debt?

      • Cid Campeador

“South African blacks have been quite violent towards them.”
        It’s in their genes.

No kidding. They’ll kill each other over the last piece of fried chicken.

As a bit of thought-exercise—if we had to accept a vast flotilla of immigrants–millions, not
mere hundreds of thousands–the most practical AND humane means would be (dress it up
lexically via Madison Avenue any way you can ) a variant of indentured servitude or,…yes…humane slavery. After all, as every parent learns, freedom for a human being is that optimum point at which the person can make productive use of the degree of liberty enjoyed and above which, persons would be at risk to exercise liberty in their own interests.
If significant numbers were provisionally let in to be observed and assessed and indeed psychologically measured–the basis for returning a lot of them and “superintending” the others would be clear enough. The whole show seems to draw upon feverish assumptions of socio-biological equality. Such dreams have nightmare consequences.

  • Chip Carver

The dream is the usual suspects’ fantasy of running the world or at least eliminating all whites from the planet. Overreaching has always been the Achilles heel of these people’s machinations and the fact that Europe is starting to swing to the right is a direct result of their chicanery. That move rightward is only going to increase in speed as the now obviously planned attempts to flood Europe with cave-people accelerate.

  • mobilebay

Developed nations are expected to furnish all sorts of aid, including money, to third world countries, then are expected to take in their people too. Where does it stop? When the host countries become third worlds also? There must be a solution.

  • IstvanIN

If you think you can close the gates to people fleeing war and repression, then you are clinging to a fantasy.
Actually you can, through both disincentives as well as direct action.

  • Jason Lewis

Would a minimalist approach include sinking the boats?

    • George Moriarty

Ask the Russians, Chinese and North Koreans.

    • David Ashton

Didn’t Malaysia once try something like this?

  • UN: “If you think you can close the gates to people then you are clinging to a fantasy.”

Obviously the UN has chosen to become an enemy combatant, which doesn’t mean it should be visited by American drones, necessarily.

  • George Costanza

“If you think you can close the gates to people fleeing war and repression, then you are clinging to a fantasy.”

This is the contempt the UN, which is a “third world organization”, has For Europe and Western Civilization. The UN sees the cesspool of war, poverty, corruption and utter chaos that’s rampant in Mideast and African countries. And then they see Europe, orderly, wealthy, not perfect but much better than. They see this and they become vexed, but it’s obvious what they want, THE FIRST WORLD TURNED INTO THE THIRD WORLD.

    • Tim

I use to think their flag was the coolest thing ever when I was a kid. Now I see it as some sort of Coca-Cola logo making us want to drink poison…

  • libertarian1234

UN: “If you think you can close the gates to people then you are clinging to a fantasy.”

And, if you think you can flood the west with non-stop third world hordes without creating world-wide warfare you’re not only clinging to a fantasy, but you’re going to get caught up in the worse possible scenario you could ever imagine.

It would probably save the world if jihadists flew a plane into the UN building.

    • David Ashton

Wasn’t the very first UN Secretary General Alger Hiss?

  • De Doc

In these times when homegrown, Islamic terrorists afflict Europe, these leaders seek a rational answer to this problem. The solution is quite simple. Import more potential Islamic terrorists by the tens of thousands!

Let’s fill up his house with “refugees”. Will he close his own gates to these same people?

What happened to the backbone of whites? Not so long ago, this nightmare of third world invaders would have been unheard.

  • David Ashton

    NWO HQ.

  • Cid Campeador

Screw the UN. Barry Goldwater was so right when he stated that we should have kicked the whole crew out of NYC.

  • IKUredux

This entire problem boils down to one fact, and, one fact only. These people seeking to move into our countries are inferior beings. They are incapable of sustaining a civilization on their own. They are congenitally stupid. There is NO cure. Since the Western world has done its utmost to become secular and turn their back on Christianity, there is no moral imperative to allow these sub standard humans into our countries. Life is harsh. Darwinian precepts prevail.

Since we are now secular, and, it is all encompassing, and Darwin rules…so be it. Let these people survive on their own. It is after all, survival of the fittest, is it not?

Then, so be it. Let them learn to survive, or not, on their own. Wouldn’t want to get in the way of science, now, would we?
