Duval Teacher Faces Termination for Repeated Profanity Directed at Students

Stephanie Brown, WOKV (Jacksonville), March 10, 2014

A math teacher within Ribault High School is facing termination after the District finds she used profanity directed at her students–and it’s not the first time.

WOKV obtained the investigation into Joyce Quiller, who teaches with The Bridge to Success program at Ribault. The Duval County School District first began this investigation in January, after receiving complaints from students and parents about Quiller’s conduct.

The investigation shows eight students in 10th and 11th grade met with the District, seven of whom accuse Quiller of using a range of profanities and having a general disregard for their work. One student said Quiller asked a student who came to school without a pencil “What is the point in coming to the mother f****** class if you do not bring materials”. Another heard Quiller tell a student to “Shut the f*** up”. When a separate student asked for make-up work, Quiller allegedly told her “I am not going to help you with s*** else”. Still another said Quiller “criticizes him and calls him a N*****.

Those students also say Quiller refuses to let them turn in work, doesn’t answer questions, and tells the class who is getting an “F” in front of all the other students. An academic audit was performed on Quiller’s class as a result of these allegations. The investigation says that found she had assigned 108 of her 140 students “F’s”, or 77.1%.  The investigation says 90.7% of Quiller’s students received a “D” or “F”.

One of the students questioned did not have the same problems with Quiller. She told investigators Quiller is strict and does not put up with students who do not want to try, but she did not remember hearing Quiller use profanity. {snip}

Quiller herself submitted a written statement to investigators saying she was “appalled and disturbed” by the allegations.  She denies using any profanity and says she helps her student pull their grades up as much as possible. Further, Quiller says the Assistant Principal has a vendetta against her.

{snip} As recently as October 2013, she received yet another written reprimand for using profanity and derogatory language on several occasions in the presence of students. Investigators believe she said phrases like “Sit your a** down”, “get out my f****** class”, and “pull your damn pants up”. Quiller was still receiving counseling as a result of the most recent reprimand when this most recent investigation happened.

[Editor’s Note: According to this site, Ribault High School is 94 percent black, 3 percent white, and 2 percent Hispanic.]

Sounds to me just the kind of teacher you need in a black school.

If 90% of her students get Ds or Fs, it’s likely because that’s what they deserved.

    • Irishgirl

90% fail rate in a 94% black school – sounds about right to me.

      • JackKrak

        Me, too.

Then again, anything that’s 94% black shouldn’t be called a “school”

        • MooTieFighter

          dat be a skoo

    • Jesse James

Right it takes a lot of courage for a teacher to fail that many students in today’s educational climate. My guess is this teacher really cares about the kids and is not willing to be a part of the “let’s all just pretend” crowd. No doubt giving that many Fs and Ds causes that teacher much more grief with the school administration and parents than just passing everyone through with low Cs.

    • Nathanwartooth

Especially teaching math to black high schoolers.

There is probably a circle of hell where you are forced to teach math to inner city teenagers for eternity.

  • Irishgirl

    “Calls him a N******”

So now we’re capitalizing the n-word?

    • David Ashton

      Called him a Nigerian?

    • LACountyRedneck

I’m offended by the use of “N-word”. It’s “N*****”. Thank you.

  • Alexandra1973

If she did do that, she’s just speaking their language.

  • ncpride

I don’t see a problem here. Considering the utter nonsense teachers have to deal with these days, I think it’s about time they fight back, even a little, and no matter the color. Just read the comments section of the original article……. they don’t see a problem either which goes to show people are totally fed up with black disrespect and dysfunction.

  • Kit Ingoldby

Sounds like she is being victimised for daring to have standards.

    That is obviously unacceptable.

    • Oil Can Harry

Exactly. She’s being railroaded for giving these dopes the low grades they deserve.

Does anyone believe these future prison inmates are being intimated by a middle aged woman? Or that they’re blushing from her allegedly salty language reaching their virgin ears?

  • …who teaches with The Bridge to Success program at Ribault.

Bridge to Success–another waste of money spent coddling blacks looking to get that edumacashun and become President of the United States. Bridge to Success is all over the US: “the primary focus is directed toward assisting those students who exhibit problems traceable to social, emotional, physical, and developmental conditions which impede the learning process.”

In other words, Quiller was assigned to teach the psychos. gangbangers, and dummies.

Lucky for her she’s not dead, like the nice liittle school teacher in Massachusetts.

When did Samuel Jackson change his name to Joyce Quiller?

  • MekongDelta69

Since they didn’t specify she was White (and they would have plastered that ALL THROUGH the article, if she was), I’m guessing she’s black.

  • r j p

Those students also say Quiller …. tells the class who is getting an “F” in front of all the other students.

Nothing wrong with bringing back shame. Now pull them pants up.

  • Luca

I suspect they will really crack down on her and force her to retire with only 90% salary instead of 110%.

  • dd121

I’m sorry, I’m trying. I just can’t think of anything snarky enough for this article.

    • Hitting a home run off a fastball isn’t very difficult, my friend!

      • dd121

I know, I know. I must be slowing down.

  • sbuffalonative

    It’s already a classic.

  • Frank_DeScushin

“Pull your damn pants up” is solid advice.

  • r j p

Did she go buy some black rope at a boat shop and glue it to her head?
    That stuff looks disgusting.

  • George Clark

She ought to receive a raise.

  • Ringo Lennon

    Boy, that’s black!

  • LHathaway

First they came for the trade unionists. . . In this case. . first they came for the KKK. . Now they are coming for everybody. . but they really only need to make a few examples in order to make everybody afraid. Totalitarianism has really made great strides. . .

You’d think people would be afraid of them up front already but apparently that’s not the case, or these few must feel they are facing a ‘moral dilema’ or some sort. .

I read that word somewhere. .

  • MBlanc46

Well, the Negro kids are getting “someone who looks like them”, and, apparently, acts as they do. The white kids should be removed from that hellhole school immediately.

    • They’ve been saying for years that black kids need black teachers. Quiller was merely “keepin’ it real”.

      • MBlanc46

I’m in complete agreement. Black teachers for all-black schools.

  • crapps

If she was from the ghetto, I could understand her language habit..
without a doubt the most flamboyant potty-mouths in the world.

  • WR_the_realist

I’m surprised that her students complained that she spoke Ebonics. As for giving F’s to 108 out of 140 students, she may be the only honest grader in her high school,.

  • NoMosqueHere

More and more whites of all ages use vulgarities these days. The other day, I was in the presence of a white, middle class grandmother whose speech was peppered with multiple hard core curse words. She emulates the blacks in the media.

  • QuinnTheEskimo9

Is the teacher black or white?

If she’s black then what’s the problem? She’s just keeping it real and speaking the students’ own language.

  • Garrett Brown

I knew before clicking the article she was black.

  • PesachPatriot

What a surprise….it never, ever stops up in jacksonville….I bet the math scores were a lot better at the recently renamed nathan b forrest high school and that the teachers there did not use profanity at their students. Then again if I had to try and teach math to aspiring rappers in that particular school district I would probably lose it every now and then and let the expletives fly….at least she gave them the sensible advice of pulling their damn pants up….the parents of the 5 per cent white and hispanic kids are muy loco for keeping their kids in this school…

  • Diana Moon Glampers

I fail to see the issue here.
Obviously, she is being railroaded for giving fair grades. The 4% (I always thought a talented tenth seemed a bit inflated) are lucky to have her.

  • Diana Moon Glampers

No, not in ‘our’ schools. In theirs.

  • Nancy Thomas

True story…I had an unruly class of rotten gang members and they wouldn’t listen to me at all. An elderly black female teacher (noticed the disturbance) entered my classroom and yelled and screamed and cursed them out, and she used every dirty word in the book! And those gang members cowered like scared puppies.

Now here’s the bitter irony….I sent out a dozen failure notices…and two days later I was fired because a student lied and claimed that I used bad language in the classroom! Of course, I was the only white involved and they ganged up on me and ran me out. THAT is what the rest of the country has to look forward to.

  • LACountyRedneck

Need a White teacher doing that with black students.

  • Thank you for that!

  • RisingReich

Profanity now includes basically requiring bastard Dark skins to behave in class. Next thing you know, you’ll be sent to a reeducation camp if you mention the Tribe in a manner they disapprove of.

    Look at Canada.

    • Nancy Thomas

Yes, they bring up new “hate crime” legislation on a weekly basis. They want to kill free speech. Of course, PC has already killed free speech.

      • LHathaway

No doubt. Free speech is already dead as a door nail. These things could likely be about displays of power, or ’empowerment’ one might call. Of course, one might call it instead, giving greater power to the only ones with it in the first place.

  • M&S

A white teacher who thought she was being unfairly persecuted would have launched a preemptive strike with a previously consulted lawyer and an unlawful dismissal or harassment suit already typed and set to file.
A white teacher who _knew_ the other school administrators were out to get her would provided ammunition for that suit by having discrete video of that class room, 24:7, after she was first put on probation.
So that when she was fired, she could slam them back with a “The lying little monsters!” civil suit against the whole school district for failure to investigate properly and with appropriate professional objectivity.
Yes, it’s technically illegal to film people without their knowledge in a lot of states and probably doubly so in a school.
But it’s also illegal for someone to be fired for their race, ‘last I heard’, and by using this as Casus Belli (whether it was or not) she could have guaranteed her case would go straight to a federal circuit if not the SCOTUS on rights of the unfairly denied work to a proper investigation of their guilt without racial bias. Being a woman, even a white woman, would have given Joyce Miller a huge edge in this victim’s parade.
Joyce Quiller did none of these things and so it was pretty much a given that she was not white and thus didn’t expect ‘her own’ to betray her.
In truth, because she makes other black success statistics look suspicious, she was likely under some kind of crosshairs from a much higher, political, level anyway.
If she is a decent woman with a clean record to this point, she is still likely hireable as openings to teach blacks in disadvantaged communities are hardly few and far between. Alternately, she might want to cut her losses and not aggravate whatever pathology has caused her to lose respect for herself as much as her students in using such language.
It’s just a matter of how honest she wants to be with herself.

    • It is legal to film people in areas where they have no reasonable expectation of privacy. If you take footage of my family and me walking down the bike path here, that’s within your right, because we are out in public. If you hide a video camera inside a restroom and shoot footage of people using the toilet, you’re going to prison.

That said, what you do with fairly-obtained images or footage can also subject to legal action if you use your material to defame the subjects. Lesbian vegetarian communist militants photographed white men in Santa Cruz when I was an undergrad there. So far, so good. They then used these images to print posters marked “RAPIST” and distributed the posters. That’s libel.

  • Nathanwartooth

    I found the same picture.

This woman lives in the same city the story takes place with the same name. Good chance it is her.

  • Funruffian

Could you imagine going to a school like this? OMG. Those are grounds for child abuse.

  • Katherine McChesney

‘Ribault High School is 94 percent black, 3 percent white, and 2 percent Hispanic.]’

    Sounds like hell on earth.

    • LHathaway

“94 percent black, 3 percent white, and 2 percent Hispanic”

This is a school where students begin the day after listening to ‘the black national anthem’ and where they have more ‘diversity’ and ‘sensitivity’ training than even mostly white schools, if that’s possible. But by being ‘sensitive’ to minorities, at this school that is 3% white, they mean discussing the importance of being respectful and sensitive to students of color.

  • Katherine McChesney

I found another of those ridiculous ‘black’ names yesterday. “Hydredecine”…google it.

    • That sounds like one of those crazy new medications with hideous warnings we see advertised on late-night TV.

      • IstvanIN

        Super-weight loss drug!

  • Earl Turner

94% black? My god, can you imagine the smell?!

Well it’s obvious that the teacher is black otherwise the entire story would’ve been written around the “she called me a n*****” claim. All the other stuff like the cursing and the bad grades would’ve been nothing more than decorative ornaments for the media to hang on their brand new Christmas tree of a story. It’s the kind of story they love. And if she had been White we would’ve been told that in the very title itself: HEADLINE: “White Teacher Calls Darling Diversity Tike A N*****!”

  • Brian

    Insubordinate AND churlish?
