French Far-Right Aims for Success at Local, EU Elections

Ingrid Melander, Yahoo! News, September 15, 2013

France’s far-right National Front, buoyed by improving poll numbers, is aiming for big gains in municipal elections next year and the top spot in the European parliament ballot, its leaders said at the party’s annual convention.

The two 2014 elections, the first since the Socialists came to power in 2012, will dominate the political agenda in the euro zone’s second-largest country for the next nine months.

In a strategic shift for a party long content with attracting protest votes in national polls, the National Front says it wants to build a local base with the March municipal elections as a step to one day ruling the country–ambitions that are a growing headache for mainstream parties.

“Our strategy is to win as many municipalities as possible and get hundreds of city councilors elected to be there for the long run. It’s a condition for winning at the national level and the presidency,” party leader Marine Le Pen told reporters at the weekend convention in Marseille.

“We have every reason to work with enthusiasm because we’ll be in power in the next 10 years,” said the 45-year-old, who replaced her paratrooper father as party chief in 2011.

The party has a long way to go before it could be included in any government, but opinion polls show it is gaining ground as both the Socialists and the main conservative opposition UMP agonize over how to counter the far right and appeal to voters.

More than a third of French voters say they are sympathetic to the ideas of the party, whose agenda focuses on concerns about immigration, rejection of Europe and disillusion with mainstream politicians, a survey showed earlier this week.

The UMP, deeply divided since Nicolas Sarkozy lost the 2012 presidential election, is shaken by near-daily rows over whether to veer more towards the National Front’s agenda.

For the Socialists, who devoted part of their own summer convention to debate the role of the National Front, the popularity of right-wing party’s anti-austerity, anti-EU stance is challenge as the government must rein in the budget deficit.

Some 16 percent of those surveyed in a CSA poll plan to vote for National Front candidates in the municipal polls, the survey showed on Friday, four points more than six months ago.

Academic Sylvain Crepon, an expert on the National Front, says that while the party is aiming for incremental increases in municipal seats to progressively build credibility on the ground, it has a shot at an outright victory in the EU vote.

“It can play on the protest vote, in a context of doubt about the EU and the euro,” he said. “It could become, just for this election, symbolically, the first party of France, or the second. That would be a thunderbolt.”

I’ve long said that those on our side must go local to win national power. It appears that the National Front is doing that now.

In the U.S. we see too many third parties emerge and run some candidate for president and, of course, that candidate doesn’t have a chance of winning. Then the party shrivels.

These parties have to start in local small towns and cities. It isn’t difficult. Just go to your local city council meetings and start understanding the local issues. Then, you can run for office based on that knowledge. If you want to win, stay fairly mainstream and start knocking on doors to tell people how you’re going to help them right where they live. Forget larger philosophical issues at this time. Tell them about fixing the sidewalk in front of their homes. Tell them about helping the schools. Adjust to local concerns. Build a local power base.

    • joesolargenius

I am beginning to believe that third parties are designed to siphon votes away from certain contenders in order to make them agree to concessions in order to get those votes back.

      • NeanderthalDNA

The American presidential system makes third parties generally a temporary phenomenon.

        • HJ11

Here’s the way we have to work the system: Many local elections are supposedly non-partisan. Our candidates, with our views can run and win in such elections if they’re smart. We really have to start being more clever than we have been in the past.

          • joesolargenius

Get out of our house or goooh, com spent years trying to do that but were unable to compete with the more popular Tea Party groups and therefore could not get more than 100,000 members nationwide.

    • MBlanc46

I think local elections are even more difficult. Turnouts are low and small cliques can dominate for years. We need to abandon parties and take our efforts to the streets.

      • HJ11

We can be those small cliques.

        • MBlanc46

Maybe. But I can’t see how taking responsibility for the streets and sewers and garbage pickup are going to advance the cause much. I don’t disagree that politics on the local level are the best way to run society, but that’s just not the system that we have in the US,

    • jackryanvb

      Agreed.

But, really old Amuricuuhn patriots just love these no shot third party Presidential campaigns. It’s virtually the only thing that gets them out of the house and they live to see their old guy get a few seconds of MSM TV time to speak…

      THE TRUTH!

      • HJ11

Those kind of “patriots,” are not my kind of Whites. They are the kind who stupidly still think all humans are really White people with different paint jobs who just yearn to have their inner whiteness shine through those darker paint jobs. Such patriots are fools. I shun them.

  • WASP

I’m glad to see the National Front is giving France’s main stream parties a big headache. Go Marine!

  • William Krapek

Go Marine! She’s a righteous stand-up chick. Love her.

  • Diversity Awareness Brigade

Panic will be translated into “immediate action” that outlaws right wing parties.

  • Spartacus

Things in France are very bad already. French people get butchered every day, and their government does nothing. I can recommend the Blonde of Youtube videos as a good source for the things that are happening there :

    • JohnEngelman

Is it really true that immigrants in France have a higher crime rate than French people? Can you document that? This is not a leading question. I do not know.

If you or anyone else responds, I am not interested in anecdotes. I want statistics.

What about immigrants in other countries?

      • NeanderthalDNA

They don’t keep racial stats I believe.

      • jeffaral

        You are boring Engelman.

      • Spartacus

How can you even ask something like that is beyond me…

        • JohnEngelman

I just did. Now what is your answer?

          • Spartacus

Immigrants in France are mostly african and middle-eastern, and they commit just as much (if not more) crime as the blacks in the US. Paris has, on average, 100 torched cars EVERY NIGHT !

  • Puggg

Newsflash. Political party’s goal is to win elections.

I like what they’re doing here in France. You have to fill up and be good at the little elected offices first before people will take you seriously with the big ones.

  • bigone4u

Women leading the way in France and in Norway. Where’s that good woman to help the USA find its way out of our mess? One thing for sure, Hillary ain’t the one we need.

    • Where’s that good woman to help the USA find its way out of our mess?

Somewhere in the San Fernando Valley.

  • From what I can tell, the FN draws more blood from the lamestream left than the lamestream right in French politics, though with the way both the UMP and Socialists are panicking over the FN, perhaps now the blood letting is about equal. I do know that when JMLP had his first ballot triumph in 2002, the Calais area, Calais being the French end of the Chunnel, which had voted Communist (literally) for a long time, voted FN that year and hasn’t looked back since. Which proves that at least in that case, and probably too in many others, white people who are or claim to be communists or some other variant of far left really aren’t, but they want real populism, and only vote communist or far left because they’re the most likely to fake it. When given a better option, such as the FN and JMLP, they’re not so far left anymore.

    • Epiminondas

I still harbor suspicions about whether these people even know what WW2 was about. Many of them have come full circle back to nationalism…if they ever really left it.

    • MBlanc46

I remember being in Calais 25 years ago and seeing “Mort aux Arabes” graffiti everywhere.

      • Sick of it

These days the Arabs deal death to the French.

  • David Ashton

Watch very carefully what is done to prevent their success.

    • Spartacus

When the National Front started becoming powerful for the first time, they modified the election system specifically to weaken them. They even admitted it… And they dare call it “democracy” .

  • ViktorNN

The identity-oriented Right seems to be having a resurgence in Mother Europe.

We’re so far behind in the US, it’s not even funny. The right in the U.S. is obsessed with “colorblind conservatism” and “I’ve got mine libertarianism.”

    • Earl Turner

      “I’ve got mine libertarianism”

      I like that. Very fitting.

    • jackryanvb

Agreed. And don’t try to use reason, facts, statistics with Libertarians – it’s a religious cult. Just see to it that race denying libertarians suffer real world pain for their racial treason.

    • Sick of it

We’ve also got “I’ve got mine conservatism” in this country.

  • Spartacus

Sarkozy is a jew. Look it up .

    • IstvanIN

and please don’t call him Hungarian. Hungarians have been victims of his people for a long time.

      • Zaporizhian Sich

Indeed, the Jews controlling the Soviet Union committed terrible crimes against the Hungarian people, for which Russians and Ukrainians have been blamed.

    • Sick of it

I didn’t find a link on my own, but it’s obvious that he’s non-French no matter how one looks at him. France should not be ruled by a foreigner.

  • MBlanc46

I suspect that a party in any formerly white nation that could take an anti-immigrant stand would be successful. Fortunately for the FN, the French party system is fluid enough that they had an opportunity to force their way in. Alas, the chances of such a thing happening in the US are pretty slim.

    • jackryanvb

Agreed. Another reason I despise idiot Ron Paul Constitutionalist, race denying idiot. Like the American political system is somehow perfect, the reality is it sucks for us, the Declaration of Independence spouts race denying nonsense which is suicide for our people…

      Or maybe it was murder.

  • IstvanIN

They need to bring back the Terrors. The French Revolution was a horrible thing and left France a mess for over a 100 years, but now might be the time for it.

    • MBlanc46

We need radical change all over the world. The global economic elites are concerned with nothing but increasing their own wealth.

  • jackryanvb

France has been a strong White racialist nation for a long time. Don’t listen to idiot Amuricans who spout the lie that:

    “The French never fight”

Yeah, Whites in France prefer not to fight with fellow Whites like Rusia, Germany, Serbia etc, unlike idiot Teg Nugent/Hank Williams Jr Amuricah fans, who swallow any and all Neo car war mongering lies.

Study up on the out and out race war in French Algeria in the 1950s. French military killed over a million Arab Muslims, maven used torture against Muslim terrorists.

The Battle of Algiers movie is surprisingly fair to the White French side … Which was/is our side.

    • Sick of it

Neo-cons have been shown to be a distinct minority among the Republican base in light of recent events. They are over-represented in government and the party machinery.

      • Zaporizhian Sich

They are not conservatives at all, they are Bolsheviks in sheep’s clothing. One look at their backgrounds and one will see very quickly they are about as conservative as a streetwalker is virtuous. In other words, they are fake in all respects except for the severe damage they have done to white Americans’ interests that will take generations to repair, if at all.

        • Sick of it

The Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson might be names you’re looking for. They finance the Neo-Cons.

          • Zaporizhian Sich

Yes, they are just two of many hostile elites who fund these tyrants.

          • Sick of it

The Rockefellers and their many subordinates also fit the bill.

    • joesolargenius

I saw that movie on Hulu and also thought that it was one of the fairer propaganda movies I had ever seen. The director made his points well and although the white guys were of course the villains he escaped any racist overtones by presenting it in a semi documentary style .

  • jeffaral

    Vengeance is sweet!

  • Sick of it

In a lot of ways, that makes us normal people. Just listen to the deranged notions held by most people today. Compare to thousands of years of human existence. The lunatics are running the asylum.

  • Zaporizhian Sich

Most likely, they and their accomplices will be slain at the hands of both, possibly with some of the very weapons of mass death and destruction they will use against us. In other words, karma does not forgive or forget, and what they have and will do ultimately will cost them everything. The terrible fate our enemies will meet at our hands will be beyond poetic justice.
