Egyptian Islamists Turn Their Rage onto Christian Community

Leila Fadel, NPR, August 19, 2013

[Editor’s Note: An audio version of this story can be found at the original article link below. What follows is a transcript.]

As if the situation in Egypt isn’t complicated enough, the lawyer of former leader Hosni Mubarak says his client could be freed from prison this week. Some of the charges against Mubarak have expired, but the ex-president still faces other charges, including the killing of protestors before his 2011 ouster. More than 900 people have been killed since last week, when the military-led government started cracking down on supporters of the recently ousted Mohamed Morsi.

{snip}

GREENE: Some fear that Egypt is on a path to civil war. Among the victims: Egypt’s Christian minority. NPR’s Leila Fadel reports on a wave of attacks against them.

LEILA FADEL, BYLINE: It is Sunday, the day of prayer.

(SOUNDBITE OF FOOTSTEPS)

FADEL: But instead of the sound of church bells, there is only the crunching of rubble, as people walk through the remains of the Church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Kerdasa, just outside Cairo.

REDA GABALLAH: (Foreign language spoken)

FADEL: Reda Gaballah walks us through the grounds. The three buildings for mass, baptisms and funerals are burned out, the walls completely black. On the floor are shards of marble, charred religious books and destroyed portraits of saints. The pews are turned over, some just ash now. A large cement cross that once stood on top of the church is in pieces on the ground amidst the debris.

GABALLAH: (Foreign language spoken)

FADEL: Reda says some 1,000 men came Wednesday, burst through the metal gate and destroyed this place of worship. They chanted: Islamic, Islamic, and he ran. He and five others escaped through the back door. They took refuge with Muslim neighbors and watched helplessly as the mob set fire to the buildings, tagged the walls and left behind a dangerous warning at the church’s entrance, the words “and still”–implying there is more to come.

GABALLAH: (Foreign language spoken)

FADEL: Reda’s eyes water as he reads out the graffiti on the wall: Egypt is an Islamic country. Morsi is our president. You did this to yourselves.

I feel pain, he says. He blames the Muslim Brotherhood for this. And in the hours-long attack, no one came to help. Later, he learned that the police station had also been burned, ransacked and the policemen killed.

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, an Egyptian human rights group, has documented attacks on 44 churches since Wednesday. Eight schools were also attacked, along with two charities and at least one orphanage. And seven people have been killed in the religious violence.

The scale is unprecedented in Egypt’s modern history. And the mostly Coptic Christian community–which makes up more than 10 percent of Egypt–is living in fear.

Michael Wahid Hanna an Egypt expert at The Century Foundation. He notes the attacks come after increased vitriol within rallying cries inside Brotherhood-led protests.

MICHAEL WAHID HANNA: And a lot of this rhetoric has found space in the Muslim Brotherhood’s Egypt. It’s incendiary. It’s sectarian. It’s bigoted. It indulges in the sectarian conspiracy theories about the role of Christians in terms of the opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood.

{snip}

HANNA: At a time of crisis, Christians are being made as very convenient scapegoats.

FADEL: There’s long been friction between Christians and Muslims, but it intensified under Morsi. And Hanna says until now, the state barely acknowledged it existed.

HANNA: We’ve seen a shift now by the interim authorities to use the sectarianism of the Islamist current and the Morsi supporters as a weapon to be wielded in what is a propaganda war.

FADEL: The West has condemned Egypt’s security forces for killing protesters. In response, Egypt’s interim leaders are painting the security crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies as a war on terrorism. They hold up the church attacks as proof. But Hanna says the government is also in part to blame. They’ve failed to protect Christian institutions.

  • These guys would not let this happen.

I would give almost anything to find out what nutrient they had that we are missing. I would love to have it mass produced and fed to white people all over the world.

They didn’t have TV back then. Just saying…

No one will ever revolt if he has enough junk food and a home theater system.

      • Sick of it

Honestly, they believed in God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Wishy washy secularism was frowned upon (i.e. the lukewarm, despised by Christ himself).

      • Andy

I think we’ve degenerated a bit genetically over the past century, but mostly, we live in a culture that encourages us to only care about ourselves and our happiness in our own lifetimes. That’s good for neither our souls nor our reproductive chances.

        • Andy

          (Sorry, your comment’s in moderation.)
Our system rewards less-intelligent and less-industrious people for having children, but penalizes more-intelligent and more-industrious people. Plus, more intelligent women are more likely to go to college, get a career, and have fewer or no children for that reason.

    • NeanderthalDNA

I hope it gets worse and worse and worse. Our liblefty/fauxcon notions of how everyone should be are sickening and sickeningly unrealistic. The combination of average IQ and Islam make anything resembling our totalitarian version of “democracy” a pipe dream at the most.

Vive Assad! Vive al-Sissi! That’s as good as it’s gona get for us, libtards and contards!

If it just didn’t cost so damned much moolah…

    • Spartacus

BTW, I don’t use Facebook, but if you do, this might be that one time it’s actually good for something:

And yes, I linked to Stormfront, sue me.

    • RisingReich

No doubt, the world needs another Crusade. No doubt.

  • Spartacus

I don’t know if Churchill was right when he said democracy was the lesser evil of all forms of government, but he clearly never visited a muslim country.

    • David Ashton

He had few illusions about Islam, and expressed his distaste on occasions. He reportedly also said he could not get his Cabinet to see sense about immigration.

“The Arab Spring is unleashing the hatreds of Islamic radicalism against Christian and other religious minorities,” writes Prof. Joseph Loconte (The Times, August 19). “In ‘Persecuted: The Global Assault on Christians’, Paul Marshall, Lela Gilbert and Nina Shea blame the globalisation of radical Islam.”

  • Freedoooom

This isn’t something new really… For Egypt it is, but the reality is studies have found 100k Christians are killed every year for being Christian.

But the US killing less Taliban and Insurgents in the whole GWOT then 100k is a holy war, of course.

A mosque gets burned down in the UK and its international news.

    • Sick of it

No mosque would have been allowed in Britain until relatively recently. It’s such a joke.

      • David Ashton

“Our” government then thought it would be nice to bring in fundamentalist clerics from overseas to keep the mosques i.e. new madrassas going and to allow foreign governments to fund them. Pretty dim – voluntary dhimmitude.

        • stewball

Wasn’t it the last archbishop of Canterbury who said there should be Shia laws In England for the. Muslims?

          • David Ashton

The “Church of England” has become a double misnomer. The current weed in that office recently said that other faiths than Christianity should be equally “showcased”. But then many Jews regard the claim of Christianity to have superseded Judaism as itself “antisemitic” and “therefore” as “evil” as the “Holocaust”.

    • Lagerstrom

Just imagine if 40-plus mosques or islamic centres were destroyed over one weekend in say, France or any other non-muslim (for the time being) country?
The s**t-storm would be so immense that Obama might just forget about ‘gays’ for a half-an-hour or so!

  • Jackryanvb

Many White nationalists have tried to form alliances with Muslims, trying to oppose cultural Marxists, atheists, Communists, Neo Conservatives, Zionists, feminism, porn etc. not much to show for almost 100 years of attempted alliances against common enemies.

The reality in the Middle East and almost e wry where, the whiter you are, the more anti Islam, secular, Chriatian you are.

Ataturk and the secular Turkish Republicans look much Whiter, more pro European than the dark, hairy mobs of Turk Muslims.

The Shah of Iran was a tall White European Persian – the Islamic mobs that took over, well, they look like that dark hairy dwarf leader of Iran that hosts Holocaust revisionism conferences in Iran

Lebanon – Maronite Chistian Leb women are some of the sexiest White women in the world. Lens that rape Australian women in Australia are Muslims.

Yep, if you take the White side this year 2013 you should be anti Islam.

    • Sick of it

As I’ve stated before, muslims imported (and bred with) black slaves virtually everywhere they took over. They altered the racial characteristics of peoples on three continents.

      • guest

The Arabs took in millions more black slaves than America ever dreamed of taking. I have seen many M.E. who have the features of blacks.

    • stewball

If you’re not muslim then you’re an infidel. Aren’t they supposed to kill the infidels!

  • JohnEngelman

I do not think the United States should support dictators, but I do not think the United States should promote democracy in Islamic countries either. Islamic countries are less dangerous when they are governed by unpopular, incompetent dictatorships.

    • So CAL Snowman

Thomas Jefferson had it right, just leave everyone the hell alone and stay out of entangling alliances. Isolationism, if it was good enough for the founders, it is good enough for us.

      • JohnEngelman

The only country I care about over there is Israel. The only people I care about are the Christians, the Israelis, and those few Jews living in Islamic countries who have not been massacred yet.

It is natural to care about people one identifies with. I cannot identify with men who kill their sisters, wives, and daughters when they get raped.

        • Romulus

I can’t abide others who deny who partly runs the sex trade. I can’t abide people that promote deviant filth in my country and destroy our country’s demographics by promoting open borders for whites while kicking blacks out of Israel. People that promote non stop interracial breeding with blacks, but then not themselves. I can’t stand hypocrites.

          • ShermanTMcCoy

I think this is a good subject for discussion; i.e., are those who seek to destroy us allied with those who live in Israel?

          • stewball

            No.

          • stewball

We’ve got more important things to worry about like when’s the next intifada. You Americans are so conceited thinking that everyone is wondering how to f..k the USA.

          • Romulus

If were speaking strictly of the right hand tribe, I’d have to say not exactly. The alliance with them is historically tied to Israels position as the only western democracy to help control the region and the worlds oil delivery Ports and systems. I can’t speak for all the right, but of course, the right also positions themselves with them because of money. Nearly all the investment banks in NY are tribe controlled. Lastly, conservative Christians and Jewish people have commonalities that they share. Let’s call these “the good ones”. Michael Douglass, Irving Berlin,Jesus, Sandy koufax, you get the idea. As for the left, they’ve gone off the deep end with their belief system. Liberalism as a religion. Certainly not the brand the founders had in mind. These are the ones that got the real decay rolling along. These are the ones who align with the enemy within and the enemy without. Using all the useful idiots, media, feel good kumbaya, etc., etc. Socialism, communism ,massive death. It’s hard to say if all the tribe would become one or split ideologically (left and right) If they had a common enemy out for them, then I’d say yes. I maintain, though, that if European caucasoids become the numerical minority, all the browns will Los them in with the saxons, Vikings, celts and Romans.

          • stewball

Michael Douglas is not counted as a jew per se. His mother’s a gentile and the religion comes from the maternal side. Check your facts first.

          • Romulus

Good morning, Ms. Stewball. Douglas’ father had a wonderful Jewish funeral to reconnect with his ancestry attended by his sin. Whether or not he is counted as one, by ethnics is trivial. The Phenomenon known as the Jewish mother came about as a way for the Jewish people to pass on their culture in light of Herod, rameses, and cease killing off many of their men. I agree that Israelis and American Jews are different in many aspects. As for anyone coming to Israels aid. America has been a strong backer for many decades.

Have a wonderful day Ms., I must go for now.

          • stewball

When did Kurt Douglas die? Of course Michael was there and has been brought up as a Jew but that won’t get him the law of return. America has backed us as the only democracy in the mid.east but from far far away and always with conditions. Obama shows a pro Israel face but he’s just like you! להיתרות Mr. Romulus

          • stewball

Those blacks are a.illegals b. Criminals rapists and murderers come across the Egyptian borders askimg for political asylum when they are only coming to make money. Of course they should go back. Muslims askimg for asylum from jews. Doesn’t that sound a bit ridiculous?

          • Romulus

Yes,it does. Sorry to say, but im not concerned with Israel. Im concerned, firstly, with my people of America, then Europe ,Canada, and Australia . Israel can take care of itself, if it has to.

          • stewball

Well of course it has to. Who would ever come to help? Nobody ever has before.

          • JohnEngelman

If you think the Jews agree on anything, you have not known many. When antisemites tell me why they hate the Jews the reasons they give feel like excuses.

Jews are hated because of their religion, their high average intelligence, and the high average incomes their superior IQ’s earn for them.

Those are the only three qualities that separate them from Gentiles. I suspect that they have lower rates of crime and illegitimacy than white Gentiles, but I have not been able to confirm that.

          • Romulus

Mr. Ashton and have covered this topic with you before, so im not going to get dragged down that alley again. I agree with very little that you post (comment earlier). Your either willfully clueless about Americas power structure and the tribes historical impact on the West or you truly don’t know, either way, I’ve pointed out many a media source for you to investigate before. You should avail yourself of the material.

          • JohnEngelman

I am used to being given reading lists by those who cannot answer my arguments. My response is always: If you read that and understood it, present what it says in your own words. If you cannot do that, you did not understand it yourself.

          • Romulus

Please!! Save your piety for the brain dead masses that dont have a clue. Any moron can turn any of the net work news any night of the week and count the kibbutz representation, both on fox and cnn. If you feel the need to remain blind, thats your business. I work in govt, so dont presume to think that your knowledge base is all encompassing.

          • stewball

On average I would think the same as any country. You’ve only met American jews. You should see what we’re like here. No. Rather not!

        • Triarius

“It is natural to care about people one identifies with.”

And it is natural to despise those who are trying to destroy you. But yes, I do care for my own.

        • stewball

As a brit who has lived in israel for 45 years I thank you. The Saudis put raped women into prison. You don’t have to be raped to be honour killed by your father brother uncle or any male in the family really. It’s enough that a glance is exchanged to bring shame on the family.

      • stewball

Didn’t Jefferson have a black mistress?

    • Romulus

Now onthat point John, I agree with you 100%. Yet, even if some are Christian, more coming here will only erode our gene pool even further.

      • JohnEngelman

Christians in Arab countries have usually done better when those countries were governed by dictators.

        • Romulus

True, but I couldn’t care less about any of the country’s in the middle east. The only people that I CARE about are my fellow American white boys that keep dying for the races in the middle east.

          • jackryanvb

So you don’t care about Whites in South Africa? Australia ? England? France? Holland?

These are our people, just in a short plane ride away.

How about being kind to our own kind?

          • Romulus

Yes of course!. You read too much into the text. I was referring specifically to the people and lands of the mid -east.

          • ShermanTMcCoy

Great avatar, young George Strait, my favorite German-American.

Some people aren’t civilized enough to have democracy. It has been proven multiple times.

      • NeanderthalDNA

I think a certain average IQ is a prerequisite. More than “education”.

An education is so easily faked.

        • Luca

Most Arabs have at at least 10% – 20% sub-Saharan DNA. Apparently that’s enough to classify a person as a semi-savage.

        • stewball

IQ and brains have nothing to do with each other.

          • NeanderthalDNA

If “brains” means common sense, bingo…

Actually…some have accused me of being a smart cookie, but for many years I struggled to go along with the flow, and if I am possessed of some form of intelligence, then I used every bit of it to convince myself that a big, evil, LIE was the Truth, and vice versa.

I used every cubic centimeter of my evil White brain to construct the complex and obfuscating intellectual scaffolding needed to make the reality I experienced fit snugly into the ideology in which I like many others, was indoctrinated. Obviously it was not strong enough and now I am free in my shackles, and like you in Israel, living on what Sun Tzu called dying ground.

Too much red on my ledger. For years I participated in what I now consider an abomination, flooded the internet with vicious leftist lies, sanctimoniously passing out sweet smelling poison and poisoning the well of those who accepted the ugly reality I, in my own small and contemptuous way, helped create and nurture.
I gleefully threw mine under bus, exalted the wicked, gave comfort and succor to the enemy. And thought myself oh-so-cool-and-hip.

No more. For the rest of my days, however many are left to me, I will devote myself to undoing any wrong I have done, in this matter and all others.

          • stewball

This is going to take me some time to translate. Be patient.

          • NeanderthalDNA

Meh, kinda pompous and narcissistic, come to think of it. Don’t spend too much time or effort, dear, lol…

      • MBlanc46

I think that the only democracy the committed Muslims are interested in is one in which everyone agrees to live by the dictates of the Qur’an (about which they greatly disagree, of course).

    • NeanderthalDNA

The Christians had it better in Iraq before we unleashed their Muslim fellows on them. Our idiotic imputation of our corrupt version of “democracy” on them is very foolish, arrogant, and doomed.

Most seem to hate us, and given the choice will elect those who represent their views…which is bad for us, HA HA!

Bring the boys and the money back home. Our meddling will come back to bite us…

This is going to get better before it gets worse…lol…

  • bigone4u

“A religion of peace” according to our former moron-in-chief. The only religion (actually a satanic cult) that murders little girls for going to school, gang rapes women, beheads innocent British soldiers walking down the street, and massacres US soldiers at Ft. Hood, turns kids into suicide bombers, etc. Obama is a dipstick too, but the former moron-in-chief told his biggest lie when he called Islam a religion of peace.

    • stewball

Ha ha ha! But Obama is a fool. How he got in for a 2nd term I cannot understand.

      • NeanderthalDNA

        Demographics and foolish White people.

More than a pittance of Jewish money as well, no offense, just the truth.

      • MBlanc46

The opponent was a bigger, or at least more obvious, fool.

  • din_do_nuffins

Evangelicals here will say this wouldn’t have happened if we had only hosted more Interfaith Muslims at our churches for Ramadan and cancelled our annual pig bar-b-que dinner as a gesture of good will.

    • Sick of it

People like that aren’t real Christians. We were told very clearly that we could serve only one master, so if they’re going for inter-faith dialogue, that master is not Jesus.

  • ShermanTMcCoy

Now I understand why certain member of the tribe support the “democracy” movement in the M.E. Those dictators were too protective of their Christian minorities!

  • Luca

And where is the bold statement of condemnation from the leader of the free world?

Apparently the greater injustices like Trayvon Martin and Louis Gates have greater precedence.

  • WR_the_realist

The autocrats and dictators like Saddam Hussein, Qaddafi, Bashar al-Assad, and Hosni Mubarak were the only ones keeping the radical Islamists in check. The United States, for the sake of “democracy”, jumped in and got rid of (or is in the process of getting rid of) those guys. So now we are reaping as we have sown. Unfortunately, the Christians in Iraq, Syria, and Egypt are also reaping what we have sown.

  • NeanderthalDNA

    Makes me proud.

  • stewball

Closed minds from the old days?

  • stewball

    @neanderthal. I won’t. A funny thing happens when I think too much. I get a headache!

  • WR_the_realist

There are two groups the government never wants to recognize as refugees: Christians and whites. And especially, white Christians.
