A Fascinating Map of the World’s Most and Least Racially Tolerant Countries

Max Fisher, Washington Post, May 15, 2013

When two Swedish economists set out to examine whether economic freedom made people any more or less racist, they knew how they would gauge economic freedom, but they needed to find a way to measure a country’s level of racial tolerance. So they turned to something called the World Values Survey, which has been measuring global attitudes and opinions for decades.

Among the dozens of questions that World Values asks, the Swedish economists found one that, they believe, could be a pretty good indicator of tolerance for other races. The survey asked respondents in more than 80 different countries to identify kinds of people they would not want as neighbors. Some respondents, picking from a list, chose “people of a different race.” The more frequently that people in a given country say they don’t want neighbors from other races, the economists reasoned, the less racially tolerant you could call that society. (The study concluded that economic freedom had no correlation with racial tolerance, but it does appear to correlate with tolerance toward homosexuals.)

Unfortunately, the Swedish economists did not include all of the World Values Survey data in their final research paper. So I went back to the source, compiled the original data and mapped it out on the infographic above. In the bluer countries, fewer people said they would not want neighbors of a different race; in red countries, more people did.

Well aren’t East Indians so spiritual.

    • What about the Muzzies?
One has to wonder if France was pink or blue decades ago.
The “Western World” has been destoyed. “Yep, different colored neighbors make good neighbors.” If your neighbors are poor and black, their is either a stream of men or they are dealing drugs, what ever it be, the yard is a mess. If your neighbors are hispanic, there is the midnight mariachi music, and their yard is a mess. If your neighbors are Indin, hope you enjoy the smell of Indian food. Die-versity is great.

      • Nate Miller

Actually, I do enjoy the smell of Indian food. Tasty and very healthy quite unlike unhealthy western junk food!

        • Token Finn

I think Rowan Atkinson addressed that in a skit in the 80’s. Sure the skit was meant to mock pro-whites, but it brought a truth. He said that they already have the curry recipe now, so what do they need indians for?

        • BaronBaal

Indian food is not healthy if you’re eating a lot of curry-based Indian foods. Indian curries are very fattening and bad for one’s health. ALL countries have plenty of good healthy foods to eat and that includes Western countries.

  • JackKrak

This survey suffers from “correct answer” problems.

People know what answers are acceptable and which are not. “I wouldn’t want to live next to a person of another race” falls in the latter category.
It’s like asking “Do you like puppies and rainbows or are you a horrible person?” and then being amazed at how much people like puppies and rainbows.

    • Nein

Even so, it shows that the number of those who realize that there would be something wrong with saying “I wouldn’t want to live next to a person of another race” and are afraid to speak their minds is higher in some countries than in others.

      • Morris LeChat

yes, but we can see that the French have had enough and are more likely to speak their mind.

    • StillModerated

Do you prefer detergent M or detergent Q? People overwhelmingly chose M even though it came from the same box as Q.

  • Mr. E

This map validates the obvious — white nations are the least racist because the white residents of those nations have been subjected to endless propaganda for the past half century that noticing obvious differences among races is “racist”.

Residents in other nations have not been inundated with this endless propaganda so they naturally notice race differences and they naturally feel closer to members of their race and stand up for their race’s interests. All races do this, even races in Western nations, with the exception of whites who have been told that to act like everyone else would be “racist”.

  • KingKenton

France, the least “tolerant” of Europe (according to map)? Does this align with Mr. Taylor’s comment’s concerning his recent trip to France and how open people were to his message?

    • GeneticsareDestiny

It’s probably both. The more open the Muslims become about their hatred for the French, the more open the French will become about their hatred of the Muslims.

  • Bossman

According to this map, East Indians are very intolerant of other races. This is very surprising considering that many of them are as black as coal.

    • SirMe

I’m guessing they didn’t ask the darker Indians, but what makes you think dark skinned people can’t be racist?

      • Bossman

You could be right about that.

    • Anonymous

They are really really hypocritical in this respect. In America, Indians look down on Black people for their dark skin, yet most of them are closer to Black than White on the skin colour spectrum. And yet for some reason they worship White ppl’s skin colour. Indians in America can be brutally racist/classist against their kids marrying people of other castes or other races. But all this goes out the window if they see an attractive White person.

      • SirMe

Not sure about marrying white people, that’s also disallowed in Indian culture, trust me ask anyone who has actually tried, I think you are talking about East Asians they have a white preference over black.

  • bigone4u

As a former prof, I say it’s a good pub for the profs but not of much value to the rest of us. I would not tell a stranger who might be a government agent anything about my true racial preferences. Would you? Imagine living in a dictatorship where this question was asked. Better would be measures of segregation, ethnic violence, or even something as silly as how prevalent racial jokes are in an country. Even the total number of visits to websites like N-word mania would be more telling than this worthless academic study.

  • SirMe

Looks a little suspicious, I would red up China, Russia and especially Japan. The Indian one isn’t that surprising considering the contents would have been in Caste instead of race. Then again the UK you hear horror stories about Indian children being told not to marry, White, Black, Muslim people and given ultimatums if they even dare. I guess if you believe this map then South Africa is very tolerant.

    • NYB

The Japanese and Chinese will say exactly what they think is the ‘correct answer, but then strictly enforce racial bias.

The Israelis and Indians don’t give a fig, and both are building walls around their perimeters.

  • Homo_Occidentalis

At least the French are starting to wake up, if only a modest 20% (minimum) of them. It only takes one white nationalist country to get ball rolling.

  • Formerly_Known_as_Whiteplight

“Will you please to fill out this questionnaire, indicating what sort of bigot you are!”

People check the boxes they know will keep them safe from the thought police.

  • Bill

I’m confused. What does the color grey indicate. There doesn’t seem to be a box indicating it. OH! Wait! I get it! Grey indicates the area from which the biggest problem comes to those who are foolish enough to be in the blue toned boxes.

    • bigone4u

Good observation by you. However, the grey areas could simply indicate that the survey taker was murdered before the results could be turned in. The grey areas certainly have a high rate of violence.

  • LastBastionOfHope

Tribalism is a human component. Deal with it liberals.

  • NYB

Correlate this to the amount of resources spent by each country on encouraging ‘multi-ethnicity’ and punishing nativist sentiments. It varies.

Western countries spend more on shaping positive messages about multi-racialism, and have more legislation punishing overt nationalism. The results reflect sophisticated, prolonged and sustained psychological conditioning, using news media, entertainment, legal and educational means.

In the case of South America, the respondents want to live near another race, as long as it is white.

  • IKantunderstand

Yikes! My respect for Indians has increased. Now, if they would only stop worshipping cows, crapping in the streets and dumping cadavers in that open sewer they call a river….

  • a multiracial individual

I don’t get Japan. They say they don’t care, but that is not what their immigration policy suggests.

  • a multiracial individual

Look at North Africa and the Middle East. I have heard several Muslims criticize the West for their racism, and claim that Islam is a beaitiful religion because it does not opperate based on race.

  • BaronBaal

This is nothing but pseudo-science. Just one look at the colour of China on that silly map and I knew the “survey” was garbage because the Chinese are some of the most xenophobic people on the planet.

  • Jukka Aakula

Difficult to believe some middleclass citizen of US would dare to say openly “I do not want to have african americans as neighbours”. I assume they would lose their jobs at least.

    • Fredrik_H

Most whites are simply well trained. Their actions betray them. They say they like diversity but they will move to majority-white or all-white neighborhoods at any given chance.

  • Fredrik_H

Economic freedom means you can afford not to be racist. You can simply move away from the unwanteds.

    • WR_the_realist

That works until you’ve run out of places to run away to.

  • Greg Thomas

Just as one would have thought, mexico is filled with a bunch of la raza bigots. Maybe bossman will show up to defend his raza.

  • Intrepid

There’s nothing surprising about these results. Unlike Canada and U.S., most “Old World” countries don’t market themselves as being open or even tolerant. They’ don’t get the benefits and drawbacks associated with such a society.

  • StillModerated

I guess the researchers couldn’t be bothered to do any polling in Israel, but Jordan obviously does not like its Western neighbor very much. Can’t say I blame them. And the purple areas of Russia and China are proof that they need more enlightenment.

  • Paleoconn

My respect for the people of France grows every day. The UK on the other…
