Store Owner Arrested for Using Food Stamps to Stock Shelves

Michal Conger, Washington Examiner, April 2, 2013

A convenience store owner in Daytona Beach, Fla.was arrested Monday for running a food stamp scam, using tax dollars to stock his shelves.

Bassam Abu Diab and his son Matthew were buying food stamp cards for 20 to 40 cents on the dollar and using them to shop at Walmart and Save-A-Lot stores for items they sold in their convenience store, police said, according the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

An undercover agent sold EBT cards to Abu Diab, which he used to purchase items at other stores and then paid the agent less than half the value of the cards. {snip}

Detectives said Abu Diab’s register had $88,000 in EBT card transactions, according to WFTV.

This is the second time Abu Diab has faced the same charges, according to WFTV. {snip}

  • Abu Dhabi and son probably scammed their way into an SBA loan to buy or start this quickie mart, so why shouldn’t they have engaged in food stamp fraud in order to stock their shelves? I keep hearing xenophiles brag about all the “businesses” that “immigrants” start — Mostly, they’re rinky dink outfits and scams like this.

    • Blacks and mexicans do this as well, they are so talented when it comes to milking the system. Running scams, getting benefits, falsifying applications, lying, “hustling,”– if they put this much energy into doing something constructive, they could actually accomplish something. If they believed in the US as something positive, they could actually be of assistance. Pity they don’t help anyone. They even destroy themselves.

      • nobody

        No, even if they put all that energy into doing something constructive they still wouldn’t accomplish anything. If they were capable of that they would have done it by now.

        I had a Russian student who told me that her people were scamming the American system thoroughly–she said she was ashamed of them, and how dumb we Americans are.

  • Shattered

    Souless people that hate America and everything it once stood for in the world (e.g. God, family, country, liberty, traditional values, etc…).

  • JackKrak

    I know it’s a cliche, but stories like this really are the tip of the iceberg. Immigrant-run convenience stores are the exponentially more likely than real Americans to be running scams on anything that can be scammed & food stamps is at the top of that list.
    I look forward to hearing any politician announce that he is directing law enforcement to focus on this kind of fraud – which will happen right after he rides into the press conference on his neon purple unicorn.

      The muzzie storekeepers here sell a lot of porngraphy, while openly mocking the white males who buy it.

    • Tyrone Ooks

      Watered down gasoline and no state taxes payed on that gasoline.

    • saxonsun

      Here in NYC and its boroughs one never sees white shop-owners anymore; they’re all muslim, indian or Asian.

  • bigone4u

    What are the chances this scummy scammer and son will be sent back to whatever third world hellhole they came from?

      Fat and slim. I go with “fat”.

    In Buffalo, Arabs were sending out people to shoplift produces:

    Delis’ orders for stolen goods gets stores in trouble with the law

    Six-month sting targets area shops that sold items taken from bigger retailers

    The petty thieves went out with shopping lists to steal for deli owners
    who offered to buy the stolen goods – everything from condoms to baby

    One deli owner’s shopping list included “25 tubes of
    toothpaste.” Another deli owner needed men’s shavers, and yet another
    needed to replenish his supply of energy drinks.

    The crooks then shoplifted from the big guys: Tops, Wegmans, Target.

    • The__Bobster

      ~~~~~Tops never stops…
      Getting ripped off~~~~.
  • khesanh67-68
    These type of bums have been doing this for years. Why does it all of a sudden make a news release? Another thing. Those cops make big targets, don’t they?
  • IstvanIN
    Immigrants improve the economy by taking white tax payers money and putting it in their pockets, or so we are told. It also shows just how desperate blacks and latinos are for a good meal, they don’t spend their FS (SNAP) benefits on food for dey keeds, they cash them in and spend it on weed and what have you.
    • betsy
      if it’s money that has been given to you, who cares if you waste it or don’t get full value?
      • IstvanIN
        If my family or I were hungry I would not sell my FS. We give out benefits to the undeserving. It is our payment to keep them from murdering even more of us in the streets.
  • Bill
    Second time? Why was he not deported for committing a felony the first time? Oh. Obama and the libtards who wail whenever an “other” is persecuted for committing crimes in a country they don’t belong in in the first place. I really wonder when Americans will rise up in righteous anger against those who are flooding our country with races and third worlders who have NO respect for law, no reason to be here but to vote Democratic and go on the dole one way or another.
    • Sloppo
      It doesn’t seem like the scammer is the one who “didn’t learn from the last time we hit the store”.
  • Stentorian_Commentator
    The gubmint can’t enforce our laws or track aliens, but dang can they make sure you can get an accurate read on the balance left on an EBT card.
  • shmo123
    With the government handing out foodstamps like candy at Halloween, scams like this must be proliferating everywhere. Under the Sotero regime, food stamps cost the government 81 billion in fiscal 2012. Let’s say only 10% was fraudulent (and I think that’s being generous)—that’s 8.1 billion down the rat hole folks. But hey, no problem–we’ll just print more.
  • Xerxes22
    The problem isn’t just the Abu Diab types. It,s the EBT card recipients. If they are selling a $500. dollar EBT card for $200.than they don’t don’t really need it. The government needs to track down the owners of these cards, kick them off the welfare rolls and prosecute them for fraud. But that will never happen.
    • Sloppo
      They’d lose votes if they did that of course.
  • The__Bobster
    For some reason camel jockeys have cornered the market on convenience store food stamp laundering.
    I remember a couple of decades ago when Buffalo cracked down on one of them. They sold very little food but processed millions of dollars worth of food stamps every year.
    There was no telling how old the food there actually was. I sure most of it was out of date. And the few items they sold were probably replaced by their going to the local supermarket once in a while.
    • They come here under a name and open a store with SBA loans. If the store bellies up, America eats it when they go back. Then return under a new name and do it all over again hoping for success.
  • tony montanas
    a bunch of dirty liberals went to the amish country and tried to force them to take food stamp and they refused because they are not degenerate like the black and mexicans. stinking liberals you pieces of chit, you cockaroch!
  • les kinsolving
    and probably sold them at a 75 percent markup, typical disgraceful muslims
  • In San Francisco asian store owners show up at weekly food handouts for the elderly and take the bags of food to the stores for resale, they use their elderly parents for eligibility. They petitioned their parents to the US specifically to collect the $845.00/mo/ea SSI (read taxpayers) hands out to elderly on disability.
    • IstvanIN
      That is a huge Asian scam in NJ as well. All the Indian and Chinese have their withered mothers on SSI.
  • Daisy
    I’d always thought food stamps weren’t good for just anything, and that they locked you into purchasing basics like milk, etc. But they’re not specific which is why they pose such a problem.
    • One of my secret squirrel sources informs me that a certain well known supermarket chain in Phoenix/Tucson (not a sleazy Abu Dhabi corner quickie mart) is on the sly and illegally accepting food stamps/SNAP for alcohol and tobacco purchases, and that attempts on the part of state food stamp bureaucrats to crack down on it are being blocked by the Feds.
      • I would never have to work again in my life if I could trade EBT for cash at 40% and then spend it like cash. Course I’d probably have to sell cans of “Steel Reserve” out of a cooler to get the cash back.
  • Tyrone Ooks
    The jobs unloyal immigrants create judges, public defenders, police, jail guards, etc.
  • This is win, win, win, win, win! Bassam Abu Diab and his son Matthew benefit. Walmart and Save-A-Lot benefit. Welfare recipients benefit. Isn’t this what our government wants?
  • Phineas
    This is the second time Abu Diab has faced the same charges! – with out consequences, nothing changes!
    • haroldcrews
      Maybe this time both wrists will be slapped.
  • NYB
    The name Diab is Lebanese. If you thought the Sicilian mafia was bad, the Lebanese are in the same league.
    The Middle Easterner sees the West as a ripe plum ready for the taking. They don’t go abroad looking to do good things for the host population. They are major drug smugglers, money launderers and fraud artists.
    Another great scam of theirs is stealing vehicles off North American streets and shipping them to Lebanon for resale. Upon retiring after a life of crime in the West, they want to have a nice car to show off.
  • tom marr
    typical muslims they are as low as the black and brown mobs. 85 iq crowd
  • Allah Ackbar
    Nearly every Haji-Mart store owner knows the local street people, nuts, and derelicts and will sell them booze, smokes, and scratch tickets for their food stamps at 50 cents on the dollar.
    If anyone thinks this is an isolated incident you’re delusional
  • Shattered
    Hey it’s all just “free” money from the gringos who stole their land in their estimations. Seriously, their elevators don’t go any higher than that.
  • tom marr
    as a culture blacks become more and more disgraceful and degenerate every day they are the lowest culture next are latinos. sad pathetic losers both groups disgusting. there should be segregation.
  • Fubby
    Similar racket in Pittsburgh. Two African food store owners paying their customers 1/2 the value of each stamp. Redo lupus!
  • Paleoconn
    Unrepentant and contemptuous. His son looks like a thug. Deport immigrant criminals, one strike you’re out. You blew your chance.
  • Don’t bother
    better a fraud arab than a red neck white supremacist loser that’s riddled in tattoos and high on meth while he’s impregnating his own sister…
  • Michael_C_Scott
    I can’t imagine a US attorney letting Abu Diab skate a second time on the same sort of food stamp fraud charges. It is entirely possible the earlier charges could be reinstated unless (1) Abu Diab beat them at trial, (2) the Statute of Limitations on them has expired, or (3) they were dismissed “with prejudice”. Prosecutors get a bit peeved when they see a defendant answering the same charges over and over; they tend to call this “a pattern of behavior”. Judges aren’t amused by this sort of thing, either.
    Abu Diab’s only hope is if Eric Holder tells the US attorney’s office in the area to back down. What’s he going to say in court, that even the second time it was a “misunderstanding”?
