Survey: Detroit Most Dangerous U.S. City for Gays

CBS Detroit, December 5, 2012

A local LGBT rights group is taking issue with a new survey that ranks Detroit as “the most dangerous U.S. city to visit for gay travelers.”

The company behind the survey, Alternative Luxury Travel by Bruvion, caters to upscale travelers “looking for life-enriching and memorable travel experiences.”

It describes Detroit as having “a slumping economy, increase in crime, high number of landmark gay bars closing and a severe lack of smart accommodations.”

Dave Garca, Executive Director of  Affirmations LGBT community center in Ferndale, said he’d be happy to give the folks at Alternative Luxury Travel a tour of metro Detroit for a firsthand look at the many positive, secure venues for gays.

“The city of Detroit itself and the metropolitan area at large has many safe, exciting, and fun venues for the LGBT community,” Garcia said. “From Ferndale to Royal Oak to many downtown destinations like the FOX, The Detroit Opera House and sports venues. Like any city, Detroit has some areas that are safer than others.”

Read the rest of the article. Dave Garca blames the “conservative” politicians in the state capital, not black crime, the real cause why it’s dangerous for gays and everyone else in Dirt Rot.

  • IstvanIN

Garcia points to Michigan’s state legislature and governor who, he says,
“have created an anti-gay environment across the entire state.

The Governor told everyone to beat up gays but only the blacks took him up it, is that right?

    • So CAL Snowman

Yeah upon departing the jetways at Michigan airports there are giant signs that read “Gays Not Welcome In A State That Voted For Obama”

    • Triarius

Apparently these native Michiganders have never heard of Ann Arbor, Ferndale, Saugetawk (sp?), or the other half dozen gay-friendly cities or vacation communities. Ferndale is bordering Detroit and Ann Arbor is the 2nd largest gay community per capita, only behind San Francisco.

      • Great LakesState

Yeah, your spelling was off. It’s Saugatuck. I grew up the next city North and didn’t know until college it was as gay enclave — and that’s with lots of Sunday trips with the family to the downtown growing up. But a bit further down the Lakeshore, I damn well knew Benton Harbor was black and an utter dysfunction in democracy.

    • Franklin Ryckaert

That only shows how lawabiding Blacks are!

  • Interestingly, when gay marriage got voted down in California, the gays blamed the black church ladies for it.

    • Robert Binion

Perhaps, blacks possess an innate aversion to Liza Minnelli.

    • SLCain

As I remember it, the black church people did indeed vote against gay marriage, but the gays only blamed the Mormons.

      • Jeff

I believe that is what happened. Prop 8 was on the same ballot as Obama, and so there were a lot of black voting that day, but the blame went to out-of-state Mormons (whites).

      • Great LakesState

Not true, there were incidents of homos yelling the word that shall not be said at black church-goers, but they’re an even more protected class than the Africans.

        • SLCain

I guess that pink is the new black. Still, I remember the Mormons being the primary targets of the resulting big gay hissy-fit.

        • mistermark123

          We are?

      • mistermark123

Wait. Handyandy just said we blamed black church ladies.

    • Bon, From the Land of Babble

Blacks apparently did vote in force against Prop 8 in California in 2008 (while voting for 0bama) but it was White churches, especially Mormon temples that were singled out for protests. I don’t know of one black church that was targeted at that time:

Homosexuals begin campaign of terror and violence against churches in California and across US because of Prop 8 election loss. Mormons singled out for special wrath.

Pastor Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church was targeted by several hundred angry homosexual activists, with at least one prominent sign displaying a large swastika in order to terrorize parishioners.

    • mistermark123

      We did?

  • storibund

I think Detroit’s probably the most dangerous U.S. city for *humans*, regardless of what perversion they prefer 😉

    • The Verdict of History

BOTTOM LINE —> Detroit = most dangerous city for ANY civilization.

      • Johnny Clay

I’ve heard Detroit referred to as “New Fallujah” and “Mogadishu by the Lake.”

        • The American Djibouti.

      • Could be because life within detroit no longer falls under the category of civilization.

  • Pelagian

Once again, we are showing our weakness as a race. When obvious threats to us as a people materialize, we become supine (i.e. tolerant … much more tolerant than we were 50 years ago). Whereas other races are allowed their normal, human, responses and reactions to such threats.

What manner of diversity can we expect to be measured as *less* tolerant when compared to other races? Answer: none. Tolerance-R-Us.

  • Michael_C_Scott

The only hurt I have measured out to a gay person was turning him down. This didn’t seem to bother him.

Normal heterosexuals don’t hate gays. We simply don’t want to have “relations” with them.

  • Francis Galton

Here’s a DWL axiom, perfectly illustrated by this article: conservative Whites are always more dangerous and suspect than ghetto blacks.

Here’s the corollary: blacks–especially ghetto blacks–get a pass for doing things that conservative Whites would be raked over the coals for doing. To whit:

    1) It’s okay for Deontae and La’Da’Quantrell-sha to each have 10 kids by 10 different baby mamas and daddys while living on the dole (the ghetto Love Dodecahedron), while married and highly fecund Whites who carefully raise and pay for their own children–like the Duggars–are detroying the environment by having the exact same number of kids (go figure, huh?)

    2) Blacks can throw Colt 40 cans on the sidewalk, throw Mcdonald’s bags and drink holders out the car window, and basically litter with impunity (since black neighborhoods lack wealthy/White amenities like trash cans, those poor dears…), while Whites who eat too much non-locally grown food are selfishly distorting local ecological systems.

    3) Virulent black homophobia is dismissed away as a legacy of proud/strong black “manhood” and community-enhancing religiosity, while White skepticism about gay marriage means you’re anaziwhowantstoroundupgaysandshootthem.

    4) Black gun violence is a government/NRA plot to create mutually assured destruction in black communities (it’s all whitey’s fault), while much smaller amounts of White gun violence means Whites are too backwards and unstable to handle firearms (shame on you, whitey!)

I could go on and on, but you get the picture….

    • bigone4u

Love it. Brilliant analysis of the double standard and hypocrisy.

    • Jeff

This is a great set of observations. I’ll add one: white women have fallen for this, and are more likely to express fears of safety when meeting a white guy than with a black guy. Some Jewish girl (I’m also Jewish) told me about getting almost passing out drunk in a club with blacks but she said she was too scared to meet me, a normal-looking professional white guy with a responsible job and clean record. White college girls are taught to be afraid of “date rape” (ie, being raped by white acquaintances) and are taught that blacks are safe to be around. On and on… this is why white males are losing our women.

      • barack osama

I don’t know. One of my ex girlfriends at one point admitted to me that she was afraid of blacks. Deep down, many of them must know the score.

        • I imagine most of them do know the score but also know there are now a lot of truths you cannot speak.

The emporer still has no clothes.

    • Joseph

You have to remember: to impose these “white culture” strictures on behavior is unfair. Remember when the NBA, many years ago, wanting to start fining players for using the typical abusive ghetto-language? The usual suspects actually came out claiming that this was unreasonable because this is just a harmless part of black expressive culture and did not have the same meaning for blacks so should not be counted against them.

Why should we expect them to observe sanitation, litter or traffic regulations? It is like expecting the animals in Yellowstone to wash before eating. The liberals you point out are tacitly admitting that we have to have an inferior standard for an inferior culture.

  • So CAL Snowman

Also NO detroit liquor store carries Arbor Mist or White Zinfandel, so there’s that.

  • The__Bobster

I wonder how many of the NAPA perps are on the down-low themselves.

  • Flytrap

And in other news, water is wet.

  • Epiminondas

Well, there is something good about Detroit after all.

    • mistermark123

      Go to hell, Eppie.

  • Some Guy

With citzens like this I don’t understand why Detroit is not a shinning beacon of industry?

  • guest

If it makes gay people feel any better, Detroit’s not exactly a safe place for straight people either.

  • Joseph

And I thought there was nothing good about Detroit.

  • bigone4u

Aren’t blacks and gays supposed to be part of the same peace and love and brotherhood of man “rainbow”? As usual, somebody forgot to tell the blacks.

  • rebelcelt

Blacks rob , kill, and attack them too. Whats the problem they are equal opportunity attackers.

  • DudeWheresMyCountry?

Somehow I’m thinking a gay White would be in far more random danger in Detroit than a gay Black.

    • The Verdict of History

Sir. ANY white is in jeopardy there.

  • I support homo immigration to Detriot.

    • mistermark123

And I think people named Orville need to get hit by a bus. They should also work on their spelling skills.

  • ageofknowledge

But how can this be? Detroit should be a modern liberal mecca by now of tolerance and prosperity. After all, the modern liberal ideological playbook was followed page by page from Detroit’s pinnacle right down to the present.

  • Jefferson

Blacks love gangsta culture, hence their obsession with the movie Scarface. Scarface is like Citizen Kane to the Black community.

And being Gay is not considered gangsta, hence why many Blacks have a negative opinion of Homosexuality.

But the irony is that many so-called “macho” Black men are closet Homosexuals themselves, they are called down low Brothas.

  • GeneticsareDestiny

I will never understand why gay whites aren’t strongly pro-white. White countries are the only places in the world they can live openly and freely, with no fear of abuse. If someone beats them up here, the criminal goes to jail, unlike in most African countries where homosexuality is illegal and/or punishable by death.

Why do they advocate against their own best interests?

    • Pelagian

(Yawn) Same thing we’ve been saying about every minority. When the truth is, “They just don’t like us”. They will never be “pro-us”.

    • mistermark123

      I am. Gays aren’t a monolithic group.

    • RedFIag450

I’m pansexual and I strongly oppose immigration policies that threaten the majority of the population as I know that, as long as we have such a society where the culture is gone, I can still hope of being with this amazing guy I’m with. I’m very pro-White and want an anti-immigration form of constitutional libertarianism.
We, the LGBT, aren’t a monolithic group. There can homosexuals who are totalitarians for example.

      • GeneticsareDestiny

I’m glad to hear that you support rational immigration policies! I didn’t mean to imply that I believe LGBT people are a group who all believe the exact same thing. I only meant that the majority of them seem to hold typical liberal positions on immigration policy, which lead to harmful effects against anyone who isn’t straight.

Also, just in case you didn’t notice, this post was two years old. I don’t mind replying to replies on my old posts, but a lot of people on here won’t be paying attention to stuff from that long ago. I hope you enjoy your time here at AmRen though! We actually had a more recent article about gays supporting anti-immigration parties a week ago that you might be interested in: http://www[DOT]amren[DOT]com/news/2015/01/meet-marine-le-pens-gay-fan-club/

        • RedFIag450

Thanks for the reccomendations. Will check it out.

  • Pelagian

by the way, is “danger” a good thing or bad thing to gays? Maybe it means that Detroit has more S&M parlors per square mile.

  • Alexandra

So they’re probably taking refuge in the suburbs of Ferndale and Royal Oak, the Sodom and Gomorrah of Michigan.
I used to live in Ferndale. Glad I don’t anymore. My mom still lives there, she’s a bit of a leftie, but she’s sick of the gay “pride” parades they have. Last I knew they had a gay mayor…my aunt-by-marriage had unsuccessfully run against him some time back.

    • mistermark123

Maybe it’s time for your dear mother to leave.

  • Michael_C_Scott

The article describes Detroit as the “…most dangerous city for gay travelers.”

Who in their right mind travels to Detroit anymore, anyway? The fact that crime rates there are sky-high hasn’t been kept secret for the last 40 years; even the people who wrecked Detroit don’t want to stay there. Suprise at conditions in Detroit is as absurd as travelling to Mogadishu and feigning outrage over conditions there. Does this mean that childless, affluent gay couples, casting about for vacation spots pick Detroit instead of Taos, Tahoe or Telluride? I just don’t see it.
