This Is Shaping Up to Be the Most Racially Polarised US Election Ever

Gary Younge, Guardian (London), September 9, 2012

As Republicans were promoting themselves as a multiracial party from the platform in Tampa two weeks ago, an ugly incident on the convention floor suggested not everyone had got the memo. From the podium a range of speakers of Haitian, Mexican, Cuban and Indian descent spoke of how their parents had overcome huge barriers so they could succeed in the US. In the audience, a successful black woman who works for CNN was being pelted with peanuts by a convention-goer, who said: “This is how we feed the animals.”

The tension between the projection of a modern, inclusive, tolerant partyand the reality of a sizeable racially intolerant element within its base pining for the restoration of white privilege is neither new nor accidental. Indeed, it in no small part explains the trajectory of the Republican party for almost the last half century. In his diary, Richard Nixon’s chief-of-staff, Bob Haldeman, described how his boss spelled out the racial contours of a new electoral game-plan to win southern and suburban whites over to the Republican party in the wake of the civil rights era. “You have to face the fact that the whole problem is really the blacks,” Nixon told him. “The key is to devise a system that recognises that while not appearing to.”

This could be the final hurrah for what became known as Nixon’s southern strategy in what is shaping up to be the most racially polarised election ever. Black support for the Republican party literally cannot get any lower. A recent Wall Street Journal poll had 0% of African-Americans saying they intend to vote for Romney. At 32%, support among Latinos is higher but still remains pathetically low given what Republicans need to win (40%) and what they have had in the past—in 2004 George W Bush won 44%. As a result, the party of Lincoln is increasingly dependent on just one section of the electorate—white people. To win, Romney needs 61% of the white vote from a white turnout of 74%. That’s a lot. In 2008, John McCain got 55% from the same turnout. “This is the last time anyone will try to do this,” one Republican strategist told the National Journal. And Republican consultant Ana Navarro told the Los Angeles Times: “Where his numbers are right now, we should be pressing the panic button.”

There are two main reasons for this panic. The first is that the “system” Nixon referred to is now recognisable by most—particularly with a black president in the White House. As people have become more attuned to the frequency of the dog whistles, the tone has necessarily become more shrill. During the primaries, Rick Santorum told a crowd in New Hampshire: “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.” Newt Gingrich branded Obama “the food stamp president“. Just a few weeks ago, in a clear nod to the “birthers”, who insist Obama was not born in the US, the party’s nominee, Mitt Romney, went to Michigan and joked: “No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.” This is rhetorical peanut throwing. When everyone can hear it, you’ve transitioned from a dog whistle to a straight-up whistle.

Second, with white people destined to become a minority in a few decades, the strategy is no longer an anchor but a millstone. Tying Republican fortunes to the white vote made electoral sense in the early 1970s. Since 1980, the white share of the electorate has fallen in every consecutive election bar one—1996, when Ross Perot ran. The more black and Latino voters the Republicans alienate, the more white voters they need to replace them. The trouble is they are fishing for a larger number in a smaller pool, which demands ever more juicy bait. “The demographics race we’re losing badly,” said Senator Lindsey Graham, acknowledging the problem. “We’re not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.”

But that’s not for want of trying. In just one example, the New York Times’Thomas Edsall analyses a Romney ad lambasting Obama’s healthcare reform. The ad states: “You paid into Medicare for years—every pay check. Now when you need it, Obama has cut $716bn from Medicare. Why? To pay for Obamacare. The money you paid for your guaranteed healthcare is going to a massive new government programme that is not for you.”

Leave aside the fact that the ad is judged by Politifact as only half trueand that the Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan has proposed a budget that would cut a similar amount from Medicare without healthcare reform. More than three-quarters of Medicare recipients are white; more than half those without health insurance are not white. By linking the two in this way, “Obamacare” thereby becomes a transfer of resources from hard working white retirees to indigent minority ethnic people. Meanwhile, Larry McCarthy, who produced the now infamously racist Willie Horton ad for George HW Bush’s campaign in 1988, is working for one of the Super Pac’s backing Romney.

Describing the evolution of the Republicans’ racial appeal, the late Lee Atwater, one-time chair of the Republican National Committee and member of the Reagan administration, said in 1981. “You start out in 1954 by saying, ‘Nigger, nigger, nigger’. By 1968 you can’t say ‘nigger’—that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing [and] states’ rights. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites … obviously sitting around saying, ‘We want to cut this’ is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than ‘nigger, nigger’.”

Reflecting on her experience in Tampa, Patricia Carroll, the CNN camerawoman who had peanuts thrown at her said: “I can’t change these people’s hearts and minds … This should be a wake-up call to black people … People were living in euphoria for a while. People think we’re gone further than we have.”

Wow, cutting spending is now racist.

    • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

Not demanding more spending for social justice and racial retribution against White privilege isn’t just racist, it’s a hate crime that will get you fired from your job today and tomorrow through in Obama’s Auschwitz.

    • currahee1911

Of course it’s racist: less money for EBT,  welfare moms, cushy government jobs for otherwise unemployable blacks.  Racist!

  • Puggg

in 2004 George W Bush won 44% (of the Hispanic vote)

I don’t know where people keep getting this figure from, because it’s not true.

    •  I think they confuse it with the fact that Bush is responsible for 44% of the hispanics currently in the US!

    • The__Bobster

“Sampling errors exaggerated Latino voter support for President Bush, pollsters now agree. Sharply revising the postelection conventional wisdom, different pollsters now believe Bush received between 33 percent and 40 percent of the Latino vote nationwide. The most commonly cited postelection poll previously asserted Bush had received a remarkable 44 percent of the Latino vote, losing only 53-44 to Kerry.

    • crystal evans

I can believe it. Bush is from Texas and he is very familiar with Mexicans and also speaks Spanish, unlike any other president.  Since Mexicans are the largest Latino group, it is possible that with their votes and the votes of the Cuban community in Florida, he could have gotten that many votes.

      • Puggg

I can perhaps grasp the possibility that it was around 33% nationally.  But back out Cubans and Texas Hispanics, and you probably have about 25%.  And look at what Bush had to do to get even that — Fling the border wide open and subprime affirmative action mortgages for Hispanics including illegal aliens.

  • Ulick

Well, get used to the racial polarization.  Shocker, but when you increase numbers of varying races within one country, those races tend to polarize and vote for their own.  This true in every country that has racial/tribal diversity from the Caribbean, to Yugoslavia, to Iraq, to South Africa, and now to America and Europe.

This will only get worse over time, not better.

    • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

Once Whites are outnumbered, they always stay outnumbered. Has a White city that went black ever gone back to White?

Loss of breeding grounds only speeds up for us.

      • 5n4k33y3s

Just make a strategic pact with Asians.

        • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

          There are no “self-hating Whites”.

          Those are really sado-masochists.

They are mostly sadistic and force Diversity on other Whites that they avoid themselves. If they were really self hating, they’d move into black neighborhoods.

The masochist Whites take Diversity in larger doses than the rest of us, but they also get away from it when they can.

  • pc must go

But when non-whites scream “whites don’t have a culture”/”only whites can be racist”, nothing horrible about that , huh?

(black woman pelted with peanuts, called animal).

    • Madmike

Ever think the peanut throwers might be Obama supporters manufacturing a news event? I mean who throws peanuts at a CNN black newsperson? Either an idiot or a spy.

    • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

The libs say facts are that race doesn’t exist, but then damn you for your White privilege that does exist because it is so evil it acts like a race.

    • crystal evans

Whites do have a culture. It is based on mostly the White Protestant work ethic that encourages hard work and with hard work, will come success. It is a culture that encouraged frugality over freespending that happens in minority cultures. A good example of this is blacks fighting over pairs of expensive sneakers that they really cannot afford anyway.Or fighting in lines to get  applications for section 8 housing or complaining because your food stamps ran out.

      • Howard W. Campbell

Gee Wally, how come we never see Air Jordan shoe riots in Idaho, North & South Dakota or Wyoming? They have malls there too. Just like guns cause crime, malls cause shoe riots, but oddly enough this only happens in certain places. What is the mitigating factor? About the only whites in the mall riot video are police and reporters.

My part time job at a video store about 20 years ago had an interesting lesson. When kids are dressed up in the latest designer gear either money is no object (usually white parents) or these people are generally dead broke (usually a single black mom and her baby daddy or boyfriend). My kids have had some designer duds in the past, but they were hand me downs or came from the resale shop. I will buy them good shoes, but I am not standing out in the cold all night for limited edition retro shoes.

Here is a video where the negroes literally ripped the doors off of a mall the day the latest Air Jordans went on sale.

A video of a one day delay of food stamps. This is Clayton County, Georgia (Atlanta Metro area). Be very afraid, or very well armed.

  • I think it’s incredibly racist that the Chinese do not have an African dictator or that the Japanese do not have a Wise Latina as their leader.

    • IstvanIN

That’s the ticket out of Japanese malaise:  A wise latina prime minster and a zulu emperor!

      • No, the Japanese are smart enough not to let him into their country.

        • IstvanIN

And that is why their society is in decay, no black leaders!

          •  No, it’s in decay — or decline — because the Japanese are not having enough Japanese babies. Your race and your ethnicity have no future if you don’t procreate!

          • IstvanIN

But we can all agree latina wisdom and zulu vibrancy would bring some real life to staid Japanese culture and society!

          • 5n4k33y3s

In other words, Feminism is causing the Japanese population to decline. Just as it is doing to white nations. Defiant women aren’t sexy. Men have to marry girls before they reach the age of defiance. And defiant women have to be smacked or slapped.

  • IstvanIN

I wish.  The number of race-traitors, oops, I mean whites with Obama stickers on their cars is very disheartening.

    • RisingReich

Seriously.  I see them and I can’t help but scowl.

    • crystal evans

I used to live in Georgia and I used to get angry whenever I saw white people with Cynthia McKinney stickers on their car. She spent more time worrying about subsaharian Africa than her own district in Congress. To me, she was worse than Obama.

    • FrontPorchGeezer

It’s geographic as much as it is racial.  All my Gentile and Jewish friends back home are voting for and supporting Obama.  I am now an outcast because I moved to a red state.

  • Defiant White

THIS one is?    What about 2008 when (a) you had massive negro turnout and (b) 85% of negroes voted negro?

I dobt you’ll see a massive negro turnout in 2012.  Obama is like a four-year old rap album that you’ve already listened to 15,000 times.  You can’t bear to throw it out but if you lost it, you wouldn’t bother buying a replacement.

The negro only has a span of attention long enough to say “gibbs me dat now.”  Obama’s time has passed.

    • Blacks will still vote for Obama because he is black. He will get the bulk of the black vote as well as the Latino vote. The Latinos do not trust Mitt Romney because of his stance on immigration and Obama’s deferred action program for young illegals.

      • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

They don’t vote for him because he’s black, they vote for him because his blackness assures that he will keep on crushing our Whiteness.

Blacks really don’t expect to GET much more than they have, but they do expect us to keep losing everything, especially our future.

        • crystal evans

Let’s get real. If you go to any black neighborhood, especially the lower incomes ones, and if you ask them why they will vote for Obama, they will tell you it is because he is black. These black folks don’t or can’t think too deeply about any other reason why they would vote for Obama.

        • 5n4k33y3s

Pretty much. Feminism is an indignity black men are more than willing to suffer because white men have further to fall, thanks to Feminist policies.

    • Ulick

“What about 2008 when… 85% of blacks voted black?”

      Keep going up.

Per CNN:  And minorities went heavily into the Obama camp. Blacks, 96 percent Obama to 3 percent McCain.

    • humptydumpty

Defiant, Yeah, that’s what happened in NYC when the world class moron, David Dinkins attempted to win a second term as mayor. They didn’t show up in enough numbers to win against Guiliani (Thank God).

    • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

Stop insulting the intelligence of blacks with limiting comments. They also can say “I din do nufffins”.

  • So one idiot throwing peanuts at a black camera person equals “a sizeable racially intolerant element” among the Republicans? Leave it to a way-left newspaper like the Guardian to make a stretch like that. And by the way, for what particular reason should Whites, as a group, like blacks, as a group? And I guarantee you that many blacks DO NOT like Whites, although they may not voice that opinion to just anyone out on the street.

This is just another example of the Left’s penchant for saying last rites for the Republican party. They’ve been doing it for 50 years or so now, if not longer. But some polls (the ones conducted without an ax to grind, that is) show as many as 37 percent of Americans calling themselves Republicans. They’re not far behind the Democrats in that respect.

It boils down to this: The Left is afraid that Obama’s not going to make it. They’re throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the GOP now to try to smear Republicans — and one of the smears they view as most effective is the “Republicans are all old rich White men, and they’re dying out” one. Add in the “All Republicans are racist” canard, and you’ve pretty summed up the bottom of the Democrat septic tank of campaign slogans.

    • 5n4k33y3s

Most racist blacks are quite disciplined about not openly stating their racism in any socially prohibited ways. They know the game is to provoke you, not to reveal their own racism.

  • WmarkW

The difference is that racist Republicans (like the peanut throwers) are nobodies.

The racists in the Democratic party are given positions like Attorney General.

    • Ulick

Exactly correct. Attorney General, President, Supreme Court Justina, special advisor to the President (Sharpton), all members of the Congressional Black Caucus (except for Allen West), mayors of major cities, and so on.

The Republican racists are a spectator at the RNC and a handful of guys at Tea Parties with off-color signs.

Of course, the media makes a far bigger deal out of the latter. Sadly, it works on the lemmings.

      • You can cry all you want about ethnic diversity in this Country. Its what built the USA.
Face the FACTS. Republicans had a chance to run the country…where did it get us?
Obama is doing the best job possible. Especially when you take into account all the BS he had to fight. The Turtle Guy, The Crying MAN, The Human HAM and all Its MONEY.The Face just needs to go away and take Gilligan with HIM.

        • Ulick

How does your statement address WMark’s or my point that the more racial politicians (based on their statements, policies, and associations) fall more on the Democrat side of the ledger than the Republican side of the ledger?

  • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

Just about right…. wait for it… wait for it… a little more… RIGHT NOW you will hear the MSM cries that “time has come for us to heal as a nation after such a bitter and divisive election.”

“Heal” means that MSM will step up its attacks on the dangerous far right wing extremist Tea Party (Neo Confederate Ku Klux Nazis) and force them to come around to Obamacare and Islamic Abrahamic Unity Interfaith Anti Blasphemy Laws.

MSM ELITES SAY THE WORLD COMMUNITY CAN HEAL US!  (The globe is vastly non white, and America is still shamefully too White, which means Whites must look to “the Other”  for healing from the harm that our White privilege does to our innate desire to embrace Obama.)

Meacham, who will address the CSE community earlier in the day as part of the Academic Convocation, will focus his remarks on the upcoming election, asking how we can balance the common good with individual needs. He will discuss how we as a world community can promote healing in the aftermath of what will more than likely be a divisive election, regardless of the outcome at the ballot box.

We’re 56 days from the presidential election, and the messages swirling around us are as divisive and polarizing as ever. But Pulitzer Prize-winning author and former Newsweek editor Jon Meacham says we can move past that. He says we can heal.

    • 5n4k33y3s

America should always remain free of anti-blasphemy laws.

      • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

Just try shouting “no marriage for gays!” and see anti blasphemy laws in action.

More white men should be like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis and marry a virgin girl instead of frigid, fornicating, Feminist woman.

Right. And the remark just had to be racial, of course, because, after all, the woman was black. Notice how the writer’s assumptions regarding this incident reveal his own racism.

Black support for the Republican party literally cannot get any lower.

So how does that make this “racially polarised election ever?” Sounds to me like it’s just more of the same. And when 96% of blacks vote for the black man, they’re not being racist, but when 40% of whites vote for the white man, they are inexcusably racist.

  • Dean_Wormers_Hot_Wife

When Obama wins with 99% of the black vote and less than 43% of the White, the GOP will do some soul searching and if the frustration and pain and panic is high enough, they will break out and say that politics ARE racial afterall, and that if Whites don’t organize like the others do, we will be crushed into servitude.

    And I believe in unicorns.

    • crystal evans

The GOP will have to some soul searning after it loses the next presidential election. They need to realize that they have scared away many moderate Republicans by pandering to the religious right at the expense of everyone else. That is their biggest battle.

      • JohnEngelman

So far, 50 percent of Republican primary and caucus voters have been white evangelical, or born again, Christians, based on CBS News polling of voters entering or exiting their polling places since the first contest in January.

      •  Pay attention to Engelman, people.  (God, I can’t believe I’m saying that.)   Evangelical Christians are the big time boots on the ground for Republican politicians outside of certain niche areas of the country.  You/we/I may not like them or like everything about them, but you can’t insult them and you do have to massage them or make your peace with them.  Too, in spite of some of their egalitarian and pro-Israel infantile silliness, they do have good instincts on a lot of things, and especially since a lot of them are in the South, and close to the you know whos, they are the low hanging fruit to convert to or back to WN/RR.

The GOP isn’t smart enough to come out and turn into the White Party to save itself.  That’s how dumb they are.

It remains to be seen what will come of the middle east drama and how this was scripted (oops!  I meant ‘how it will play out’) to make Obama ‘presidential’ and/or usher in a global conflict to avoid an election.

We may not even have a chance to vote at all, even if you believe your vote counts and this election isn’t already a farce to begin with.  Much can happen in two months time, especially in this world.

    Stupid Republicans.

  • crystal evans

The only thing that the Republicans care about are taking away women’s reproductive rights and gay marriage. Nothing about race. The Republican party has never really appealed to minorities anyway.

    • Memphomaniac

Untrue crystal. Up until JFK and Lyndon Johnson, blacks in the southern states were very much Republican and had been Republican ever since the Civil War. Southern mossback reactionary conservatives were Democrats. My how things have changed.

In fact, in all the southern states, every Republican is a former Democrat, except those blacks and carpetbaggers. Read more history.

    • JohnEngelman

That may be true of rank and file Republicans. The only thing the leaders of the GOP care about is making the rich richer. That is the one thing the Republican Party is very good at, and the one area where Republican campaign promises are kept.

  • 5n4k33y3s

A couple years ago, I realized that America had to be more racially polarized for whites to wake the F— up. Without being dishonorable in my methods, I have been doing my best to contribute to this phenomenon.

I write things to upset pompous blacks. You know what they really don’t like? When you point out that most of the Pharaohs of Egypt had Euro/Asiatic hair, long and wavy, not sub-Saharan negro hair.

The reason I point this out is because their self-esteem is inflated, based on propaganda that the Egyptian Pharaohs were Nubians. Most Nubians in Egypt were slaves. A few of the lesser lords of Egypt were Nubian. (Must have been Affirmative Action, leading to the decline of the Egyptian Empire…)

Mummies and mummy hair from ancient Egypt.

    • pc must go

It’s the braided hair (turns out to be wigs) that makes ancient egyptians look black… Blacks like to wear their hair in braids too…

As far as ancient Egyptians being “whites”… hmmm, caucasians perhaps.

They look more like Puerto Ricans than anything.

There was a spectrum down there, from yellow to bronze red to a few black looking ones thrown in…

      But who cares?

Ancient Egypt was 2,000 years ago+.

      • 5n4k33y3s

You’re ignoring the importance of monuments to racial prestige. The pyramids and the sphinx command a lot of respect. I just like to point out how most Egyptians tend to have wavy hair and some fairly pointed noses.

Also, I speculate that the Sphinx had a nice pointy nose before it got broken off. A good, straight, and pointy nose, not too wide…

David Aston wrote: “Restoring white “privilege” is a false description for keeping the USA on its rails and preparing against a non-white take-over.  It is not a question of insulting non-whites, but of resisting insults against whites”

I’m not trying to restore “white privilege” (whatever that is) — I am trying to restore fairness, and equality under the law for all. That means no more affirmative action, no more minority only scholarships, no more minority set asides from governments, no more minority set asides from corporations, no more HUD housing for minorities over other groups, no more section 8 housing over other groups, no more favoritism in doling out benefits such as EBT, and disability awards for minorities, and an academic system that doesn’t preach daily that the white man is to blame for all of the failings of minority groups.  I DO NOT mine programs that help people — even those that the help is stagnant — I DO PREFER programs that help to lift people out of the quagmire of poverty, and dependence. I am trying to destroy a system that discriminates against whites, and white men in particular at nearly every level of society. I am trying to change, or at least greatly slow down the demographic shifts in the country that do not serve the interest of anyone that is native born of America — regardless of their color, religion or anything else.

Yes, I am a Christian, and I do believe that God wants us to help the poor. His help though asks for us to teach them how to fish, not to just give them fish at the expense of others.

For these simple desires I am labeled a hate-monger, a racist, a white supremacist, the most laughable “trying to restore white privilege”. It is a major battle, with many hurdles to overcome. Homosexuality has been widely accepted, I have more than 40 years of anti-white educational dogma to overcome, and a base of religion to work for that has spent much of its resources funding the left agenda by the backdoor. I also have a media that is 90% against my aims.

I would love to replace the media with something better, something less biased. My stumbling block is how to get it done.  I’ve come to the conclusion that we need to make our own media, and truly learn a thing from the left about how to tug at heart strings rather than simple reason. Reason goes a long way, but you can’t win the brainwashed with reason.

  • The biggest obstacle would be getting people to decide on what principles to attach to the party. Generally, the more you try to define yourself with concrete terms, the more people you alienate.

My philosophy is simple: If you are White and want to work toward a White future, you’ll have a place. Most social issues belong at the social level, and not at the foundational level. Social issues can be argued, negotiated, and the opinions and attitudes toward those social issues can change through generations or even within one’s own lifetime. The racial integrity of a nation built upon race Should Not and Can Not be allowed to be argued or changed.

This is why in our white ethnostate party, if I had any say, we won’t deal with abortion in terms of targeting Roe Versus Wade, (I’m pro-life but want a rape exception). That’s because if you try to go for the jugular, you’ll hear the squeakiest wheel in world history demanding grease. Abortion as a social issue should be worked on like you say on the social level, people convincing other people through outside-of-government institutions that it’s wrong.

Most White men want to pledge lifelong love to women who were sluts to other men?

What kind of White daughters will these wives raise?

Like ramzpaul said, we need to move blacks away from us so that we’ll stop hurting them with our White privilege.

  • What a bunch of a mix of lies, innuendo, and misfacts. And it comes from the reds at the Guardian. This is classic disinformation. To be succinct: The GOP has NOT developed an angry white base  as the article suggests. Instead it has tried every means at this disposal to make the dog whistle as quiet as possible. The fact the article mentions the Perot election managed to increase the actual NUMBERS and PERCENTAGE of white voters suggests there is a HUGE white class of voters not being agitated to vote. We all know why: the GOP is a bunch of pathetic quisling wimps. The GOP makes no effort to campaign on affirmative action, diversity programs, the OVERT racism of ALL the non-white communities, the OVERT militant hostility of the non-white community activists, the massive crime by non-whites on whites, the use by democrats and big business to REPLACE the American nation with peons, etc etc etc. Holy crap! And the Guardian says the GOP has tried to go shrill in its dog whistling. Give me a break. The GOP is controlled by Big Business and Big Business is tied with the Democrats. In short, the GOP is just a function of Liberalism disguised with rhetoric. The real dog whistling is the GOP using economic conservatism code words as a kind of Pavlovian response system to get whites into voting for them. The fact is that with whites more and more less likely to vote, and more and more of them not voting for Democrats, that whites are essentially not represented in this country. The GOP gets its support from whites simply as the default party given the outward hostility and racism of the Democrats and their leagues of Anti-Fa extremists. If whites don’t get more organized OUTSIDE of the GOP, and/or somehow at least manage to neutralize the liberal quislings in control of the GOP, they will likely end up like Jews in Europe. Gassed.

Ummm.. Pious Christian wives that saved themselves are pretty interested in sex, lots of sex. Trust me! That’s why we have big families, duh!
