Scientists: UN Soldiers Brought Deadly Superbug to Americas

Matthew Mosk et al., ABC News, January 12, 2012

Compelling new scientific evidence suggests United Nations peacekeepers have carried a virulent strain of cholera—a super bug—into the Western Hemisphere for the first time.

The vicious form of cholera has already killed 7,000 people in Haiti, where it surfaced in a remote village in October 2010. Leading researchers from Harvard Medical School and elsewhere told ABC News that, despite UN denials, there is now a mountain of evidence suggesting the strain originated in Nepal, and was carried to Haiti by Nepalese soldiers who came to Haiti to serve as UN peacekeepers after the earthquake that ravaged the country on Jan. 12, 2010—two years ago today. Haiti had never seen a case of cholera until the arrival of the peacekeepers, who allegedly failed to maintain sanitary conditions at their base.

“What scares me is that the strain from South Asia has been recognized as more virulent, more capable of causing severe disease, and more transmissible,” said John Mekalanos, who chairs the Department of Microbiology and Immunobiology at Harvard Medical School. “These strains are nasty. So far there has been no secondary outbreak. But Haiti now represents a foothold for a particularly dangerous variety of this deadly disease.”

More than 500,000 Haitians have been infected, and Mekalanos said a handful of victims who contracted cholera in Haiti have now turned up in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and in Boston, Miami and New York, but only in isolated cases.

More evidence of the third worldization of America.  Then we have Nepalese immigrating and sneaking in here.  Throw in the Bhutanese refugees from Nepal also.

  • You sir completely missed the point Haiti NEVER EVER had a case of Cholera in its entire history of that sorry place can the US or UK boast that? besides the article clearly states that the disease was introduced by Nepalese UN troops in 2010!  a mix of Indians & Nepalese  and Bangladeshi UN soldiers have that job tied up for themselves since the UN pays these countries 1000 US $ per head per month (a fortune back there) and corruption in those nations had a very big part in why the disease ended up in the Western world for the first time, before these “soldiers” are deployed they are supposed to get a clean bill of health from their own Army medical staff etc, this clearly NEVER happened if those in charge had done their job we would not be talking about this now. I suggest you Google “Bangladeshi Army Mutiny” and learn how the UN finds these soldiers. By the way these Nepalese “UN” soldiers were previously involved in lynching a Haitian teen over accusations of stealing. ( I wonder who gave them that idea?)

    • Beloved Comrade

You can thank Whites for discovering germ theory and it is in the UK where sewage was separated from drinking water precisely to stop and prevent cholera outbreaks.

It was Whites who made the connection between contaminated drinking water and deadly cholera.  You can also thank Whites for the discovery of the antibiotics and glucose/electrolyte IV rehydration protocols that are used to treat cholera.

When was the last cholera outbreak in the US or UK?     Yet outbreaks continue into the 21st century in India, Iran, Vietnam and Africa. The most recent outbreaks occurred in Haiti and Nigeria in 2010-2011.

According to the CDC, there has been an ongoing global pandemic of cholera in Asia, Africa, and Latin America for the last four decades.  Notice the CDC mentions neither the UK nor the US.

What are established procedures for areas where cholera is present?

Boiling water kills V. Cholerae, the bacteria that causes cholera.  Digging latrines far from water and food sources (like the boy scouts) prevents contamination from V. Cholerae.  Hand-washing, washing food with clean water and thorough cooking all help prevent outbreaks of V. Cholerae.

Doing these few simple things would have prevented or lessened 7,000 deaths in Haiti.

      •  Let’s face facts Haiti is NOT perfect but until the Nepalese UN troops showed up it NEVER had a Cholera outbreak, so your’re still playing the”race blame game” I’m very sorry if you lack empathy for the poor “sub humans” that don’t know any better, just remember those “sub humans” defeated the French Army sent by “emperor” Napoleon who preferred them working to death for his “glorious French revolution” if it wasn’t for these ppl the Louisiana Purchase may NEVER have happened your USA might be looking a lot stranger now. A French speaking region like Quebec but Independent , and perhaps a Spanish speaking region like Central America on your southwestern border? how about a Russian speaking Alaska complete with Nuclear weapons pointed at your 13 to 26 protestant states? what a nightmare an American Balkans future was dodged by Thomas Jefferson!

        • Disease decimated the French army. Them the Haitians were able to defeat what was left, check your history.

        • Beloved Comrade

Seems it is YOU who are playing the “race blame game” by blaming Nepalese UN troops for Haitian blacks’ unsanitary habits that spread cholera.

The Nepalese may have introduced cholera to Haiti but what are the Haitians doing about it besides spreading it?

Blacks as subhumans? OH, I don’t know, why don’t YOU tell me?

According to the FBI and Justice Department:

Black are an estimated 57 (that is 5,700 percent) times more likely to commit violent crime against a White than vice versa, and 136 times (13,600 percent) more likely to commit robbery.

Over 34,460 White women are sexually assaulted or raped by black men each year, and most authorities believe that the actual rape figures are at least twice the reported number. The number of White rapes against black women is statistically zero because there are fewer than 10 cases nationally.

Black predators are at least 22 times (2,200 percent) more likely to murder White women than the reverse.

          Let’s review lynching.

Lynching got its name from Colonel Charles Lynch of Bedford County who defended his community against outlaws and those aiding the British during the Revolutionary War.

Lynching was primarily extracted on criminals, whether they were white or black, and a significant number of whites were lynched in the South.

Historically, lynching was most often applied to those guilty of rape, robbery or murder. Considering the disproportionate amount of murders and rapes committed by blacks against whites it stands to reason that blacks would be more likely lynched than whites.

Blacks as sub humans? All of the empirical evidence and government statistics certainly reveal this to be the case.

And it is you sir who apparently is completely unaware that cholera epidemics in Western nations were rather common until the discoveries described by Beloved Comrade.  So why hasn’t the US experienced a cholera outbreak in 100 years if the disease has been known to exist here for so long?

The point is, the disease cannot spread without favorable conditions and is easily suppressed by the most basic sanitation techniques.

    • Gotta train non-white soldiers for the big day.

“Lay down with dogs”…. Haiti = Uganda in the Carribean. Put a fence around it and let Mr. Darwin’s theory run it’s course. Oh, and when you put up the fence, make sure Sean Penn is on the inside.

I love the last words – “…but only in isolated cases”. I guess “…but only in cases where Hatians have brought it to those cities” violated something in the rule book.

I’m afraid we’re missing the point here. About 15 months ago
a new strain of Klebsiella, known as NDM-1 was isolated in India. It is
resistant to all antibiotics. A British team reported on in “The Lancet” of
April 2011 went to Delhi and tested the seepage and drinking water. More than
half the samples of seepage water were contaminated. By then the resistant gene
had spread to several other bacteria, including Shigella , Vibria Cholera and
Salmonella Typhi. Bugs can do this: they can pass on their resistance to other
    strains.

Since then these germs have surfaced in Australia, Britain
and Eastern Europe and South Africa. Look at the big picture. Read the articles
about MDR TB. It seems terrifyingly as if we are about to see the end of the
antibiotic age. This transcends parochial politics, and will impact on us all.

Cholera originated on the Indian subcontinent and is endemic there.
Unsanitary practices (which are the norm in India), will ensure that the subcontinent will remain a virulent epicenter of potential infection.

    • As long as GOD is a COW we have nothing to worry.

  • But, diversity and multiculturalism is good. That is what “they” tell me in school and on TV.

To destroy my race, my culture and my country is good.  I’m confused?

Decades ago,  I was in a small group audience being briefed by a physicist who had been part of the WWII Los Alamos project.  He noted that all of the Project people he’d stayed in contact with were not remotely as afraid of the spread of nuclear weapons as they were of the challenge of preventing and containing development and spread of biological weapons.  One wonders if maybe the immediate political needs to soft-peddle immigration issues and to throw kisses at globalization, etc,  dictate an Ostrich posture about this spectre of biologicals?   Obviously, porousness of borders is hugely incompatible with resisting such a spectre.
