Re: Editorial 3/2/07 “Talking About Race”

Dear Mr. Diaz:

The European/American Issues Forum, a moderate and thoughtful civil rights organization for European Americans finds your editorial misses the most glaring fact regarding AsianWeek’s publishing Ken Eng’s racist columns. The fact is that racism against European American whites is essentially ignored. You wrote “Silence is too often the language when it comes to talking about race in 2007”. That’s baloney.

There is no silence from voices discussing race from nonwhites. For example right under your editorial African American Callie Millner, an African American, discusses the race of Barack Obama, ending her column with “No ethnic group in America is more American than African Americans—no group has done more with less.” Doesn’t that make the Chronicle guilty of publishing racist gabage? Should Ms. Millner be fired? We think yes.

And in your Letters section Betty Yee, Chair of the State Board of Equalization (the Board that controls the most goverment $$ in California) writes that she wants to “. . . build bridges between our diverse and vibrant communities of color”. Shouldn’t it be all communities, including European American whites? That’s racism in our view.

It is obvious that the Chronicle is willing to discuss racism against non-whiles, but you have refused to honor and respect the memory of the white victims of the worst racially motivated hate crimes in the history of San Francisco, the Zebra Killings; by refusing to publicize the last ten Annual Zebra Victims Memorial Services on the steps of San Francisco’s City Hall. Is it not news to publish that not one Mayor or the NAACP have attended these Memorial Services.

We are also outraged that the Chronicle has given so little attention to the AisanWeek article “Proof that Whites Inherently hate us” (11/24/06). Talk about stereotyping! Eng wrote that “whites” hate Asians because they defend blacks when blacks are victims of racial slurs.

The Chronicle needs to stop putting European American white issues at the back of the bus and practice what they preach—after all that’s what the Journalist Code of Ethics requires. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Louis Calabro, President
