Federal Agents Arrest Hundreds of Police In Corrupt Border City

Angela Kocherga, KHOU.com (Houston), June 13

A tense standoff has been settled and there is a quiet calm in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, which is considered very crime ridden and bordering on lawlessness.

About 700 city officers are in custody for questioning and 40 face criminal charges.

Special forces moved in Monday to take control. Their goal was to crack down on the powerful cartels that call the region home and the corrupt local cops who protect them.

Hundreds of police officers in the Texas-Mexico border city have been arrested following a shootout with Mexican federal agents.

Federal authorities said they couldn’t count on the local police force of 1,200 officers. They suspect most protect drug traffickers who call the region home.
