Supreme Court Lets Trump Resume Third-Country Deportations

Josh Gerstein, Politico, September 29, 2026

The Supreme Court is allowing President Donald Trump, for now, to resume his efforts to speed up deportations of foreigners to countries where they have no connections, but the court said it will hear arguments on the legal issues involved later this year.

In a brief order Tuesday, the high court granted the administration’s emergency appeal seeking a pause on a federal judge’s ruling that blocked key aspects of Trump’s plan, concluding that it violated deportees’ rights by denying them consideration of the dangers they could face at their destinations.

The court also said it is adding the case to its merits docket and will hear arguments in December.

That could be viewed as a snub to the administration because the Justice Department had not requested that the high court take up the broader case immediately.
