Virginia National Guard Site Renamed in Attempt to Detach From Confederate Ties

Sanvi Bangalore, WJLA, February 15, 2023

The Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett will officially be renamed to Fort Barfoot, commemorating World War II Medal of Honor recipient Col. Van T. Barfoot.

The ceremony is scheduled for March 24 in the Fort Pickett area near Blackstone, Virginia.

Fort Pickett was originally named after George Edward Pickett, an Confederate States Army officer who became a major general during the Civil War.

The post is one of nine U.S. Army installations being renamed as per on Naming Commission’s recommendations to remove the names, symbols, displays, monuments and paraphernalia that honor or commemorate the Confederate States of America. Of the nine, it is the only installation being re-designated that belongs to the Army National Guard, according to the Virginia National Guard Public Affairs Office.
