Black History Bulldozed for Another Starbucks: Against the New Baltimore

D. Watkins, Salon, March 23, 2015

Another day another dinner. Tonight’s session takes place at Food Market in Hamden. The guys who invited me represent the new Baltimore, which is full of new people, new shops and new restaurants. They wanted to talk about ways I can help them understand Black Baltimore–or what’s left of it.

My recent collection of Baltimore writings and talks has made me the go-to guy on issues concerning the Negro culture of our city. Politicians, investors and pretty much anyone with an interest in Baltimore request meetings with me weekly. In most of them, I trade my perspectives for potential opportunities at pricey restaurants I don’t normally frequent.

{snip}

Suit No. 2 says he’s a developer, says he wants to help the city, says he isn’t from Baltimore either but he loves Baltimore. He loves Baltimore so much–so much that he’s willing to fix it! He said that he could grow to love Baltimore as much as I do!

$13 cocktails tend to disappear quicker than cotton candy in a hot mouth on a night like this. “You know what,” I say, pulling up my chair, drawing the duel in closer, “I don’t really know if I still love Baltimore.”

Their eyes grew. You would’ve thought I just pulled my dick out.

Suit No. 1 turned glossy-eyed. “Your writing is how I found out about you. You are a gifted Baltimore writer. How could you not love this place, man? How?”

“Gentri-fuckin-cation,” I say. “Gentri-fuckin-cation is why I don’t know.”

My city is gone, my history depleted, ruined and undocumented. I don’t know this new Baltimore, it’s alien to me. Baltimore is Brooklyn and D.C. now. No, Baltimore is Chicago or New Orleans or any place where yuppie interests make black neighborhoods shrink like washed sweaters. A place where black history is bulldozed and replaced with Starbucks, Chipotles and Dog Parks.

I used to hang in Lafayette Housing Projects with my big cousin Damon. He taught me how to shoot a jump shot, impress a girl without talking and land a left hook. That place is gone. Visiting his old unit after his murder would’ve been therapeutically nostalgic for me but that place is gone and will never be back again.

{snip}

The drink made suit No. 1 sweat a little, but he was trooper, he wanted to do another one, “Deeeee,” he says, “new development brings new opportunity!”

“For who?” I said, a little too loud.

Really for who, who I wonder? Last summer I drove down Wolfe Street and pulled over by Eager. We called this Deakyland back in the day. Most of the earned scratches and bruises I have came from here. We used to break day at that bar High Hats that used to sit on the corner, 2Pac ripped out of speakers while our plastic cups overflowed with Hennessy–the manager Big Harold had to drag us out at 4 a.m. In between the hangovers and brawls were lessons on life, leadership and brotherhood. We did stupid things but that was our community, the place where our social networks were birthed and then quickly dismantled. That whole block is gone. I realized that I may never see any of those people from that place again as 10 shirtless white guys played two-hand-touch football in a fresh park that they would never build for us–a huge Johns Hopkins logo was the backdrop.

Suit No. 2 told me that he understands exactly where I’m coming from and can see why I feel the way I do. I asked him if he could go back to the place that holds most of the magical moments from his childhood. He said, “Yeah, my old bedroom is still the same at my folks’ place.”

“Then you probably don’t know how I feel,” I replied. “I’m lost in this city. This isn’t the place I grew up in. Corporate dollars are cleansing this city of everything I loved. I will always love Baltimore, the Baltimore I grew up in. I don’t know what this new place is or even if it has opportunity for me. I honestly don’t even know if I should be eating here with you or down SOS on the eastside with my remaining friends. Look around. Do I really look like I belong in here?”

I understand that those now-demolished neighborhoods came with murder, pain, heartbreak, high teen pregnancy rates, illiteracy, gang violence and a host of other reasons that led to their implosions. I also understand that all of these issues stem from lack of opportunity. However, I don’t understand why every black resident must be displaced as soon as opportunity rides the gentrification train into town.

After five minutes of awkward silence we exchanged handshakes, business cards and “Nice meeting you’s,” before exiting.

I drove through the city after our meeting thinking about how much I hate meetings, thinking about the new Baltimore, and wondering if my voice is even needed here anymore. I do love Baltimore but it’s becoming a place for the rich and I don’t speak their language. {snip}

Blacks like to complain about everything. This idiot is wallowing in rose tinted nostalgia. No doubt he attributes black failure, criminality and stupidity on the deprived black environment but when this is offered to be cleaned up and improved by YT he’s full of resentment.

These [email protected][email protected]$ds should be ignored. They never have anything positive to offer ever. They only whine and demand gibs.

    • TruthBeTold

An historically black neighborhood needs to be preserved at all costs!

An historically White neighborhood needs to be diversified.

      • APaige

“Gentri-fuckin-cation” is much better than “Ghetto-fu**in-kshun”

      • LHathaway

‘An historically black neighborhood needs to be preserved at all costs! An historically White neighborhood needs diversity’

. . . and this is all deemed unfair to them, and it is considered evidence of racism, against blacks and people of color.

    • Nonhumans

“We did stupid things but that was our community”

      .
That single statement, by itself, sums up all of blackness and everything that they embrace, globally!!

      • Guest

        Exactly.

I was having a wonderful time imagining what The Sage of Baltimore would say to all this (speaking of people mourning the better Baltimore of a better time).

“I admit freely enough that, by careful breeding, supervision of environment and education, extending over many generations, it might be possible to make an appreciable improvement in the stock of the American negro, for example, but I must maintain that this enterprise would be a ridiculous waste of energy, for there is a high-caste white stock ready at hand, and it is inconceivable that the negro stock, however carefully it might be nurtured, could ever even remotely approach it. The educated negro of today is a failure, not because he meets insuperable difficulties in life, but because he is a negro. He is, in brief, a low-caste man, to the manner born, and he will remain inert and inefficient until fifty generations of him have lived in civilization. And even then, the superior white race will be fifty generations ahead of him.”

––Correspondence between HLM and the socialist Robert Rives La Monte, 1910.

    • Charles Martel

Going to a place his bro was murdered at is a cool thing.

      • Oil Can Harry

His deceased cousin taught him the three most important things for black men: how to fight, pick up girls and play basketball.

        • Yeah, I caught that, too. Good point.

        • John Smith

How to dodge bullets is one important thing he didn’t know.

    • So, blacks don’t like Whites to ignore the conditions in the ghetto. They also don’t like it when Whites move in to the ghetto. They also don’t like it when Whites try to improve the neighborhoods blacks live in. They also don’t like it when Whites do nothing to improve the neighborhoods blacks live in. Let’s face it, blacks will complain about us no matter what we do. That is, of course, unless we just passively allow ourselves to be victims of crime and violence and totally abase ourselves before them and apologize for “racism.” Then that would be all right.

      • Alden

They also blame us for moving out if the ghetto because they robbed beat burgled raped and murdered us
Unfortunately they are just moving on to destroy more White neighborhoods with section 8
Gov O’Malley is one of the most hard core anti White elected officials in the nation

      • Seniorsquadldr

They would complain if they were hung with a gold rope.

  • Fair Dinkum

So diversity is good when white neighborhoods and communities are destroyed, but not so good when the same thing is done to black communities.

Don’t be racist, Mr. Watkins! Think of how diversity will make your neighborhood more vibrant! Pretty soon you’ll be so full of brotherly love and the joy of multiculturalism that you won’t even notice the that you no longer have any place you can truly call home.

It’s happened to tens of millions of white people over the last half century. I assure you that it will be just as much fun for you as it was for us.

    • TruthBeTold

If he needs a new place to live, I heard Ferguson, Missouri is an up-and-coming black community.

      • JackKrak

Lots of good deals on houses, too.

        REALLY good deals…

        • ghettovalley

Or he could head up to Detoilet and buy a house for less than a bottle of his beloved Hennessey. Gentrification won’t be an issue there. No white people to ruin everything.

      • Tell him not to despair: Sure us evil Whites are gentrifying his old neighborhood. But there are still plenty of blacks left to destroy plenty of other areas and turn them into ghettos. We Whites can’t improve every black area.

  • Samuel Hathaway

Now that whites are making all the sacrifices to spruce up “black-slum-ghetto” Baltimore to make it livable again, black hands out for their share for doing absolutely nothing isn’t far behind. As for wondering if black voices are needed any more, the answer is a firm, “NO.”

Whites are doing just fine cleaning up and building back up the what the carnage and wreckage brought in the post-Civil Rights era.

    • Lexonaut

“… black hands out for their share for doing absolutely nothing …”

But they won’t have done nothing. They will have made it possible for hipsters of modest means to be able to afford to restore civilization. Surely they should be rewarded for the legacy of gentrification.

  • My recent collection of Baltimore writings and talks has made me the go-to guy on issues concerning the Negro culture of our city. Politicians, investors and pretty much anyone with an interest in Baltimore request meetings with me weekly. There’s a better way to think about this.

    D. Watkins is to Baltimore what Valerie Jarrett was to Chicago, that is, the local black whom the newcomer white liberal SWPL gentrifiers lean on to assuage them of their white guilt, if they think they are in need of those particular services.

  • TruthBeTold

Well, Truth, they freakin’ left candles and stuffed animals by the shrine to St. Swisher Sweet. They view things a bit differently than we do. A scene that once held a negro corpse is a shrine to them. Heck, at this point the entire city of Detroit should just be declared a negro graveyard, stuffed animals, jeebus candles, and all.

      • Samuel Hathaway

“Jeebus” candles.. Might those be the candles the Hispanics go for? The votive candles?

  • Stogumber

As Steve Sailer explained, there’s a strategy for Blacks to prevent gentrification. It’s called periodical riots, and it works well in some quarters of California.

  • Everything I knew growing up in New Orleans has been taken over by blacks and destroyed. Thus, I have no sympathy for black lamentations.

The hidden agenda in the article, in my opinion, is racial integration via subsidizing large numbers of blacks to live in these newly nice areas. But of course, if large numbers of blacks are present in an area, it won’t be nice for long. Gentrification will only work if it’s the right color–white and green. The green being money and the white being the skin color of the residents.

  • icetrout

black Baltimore ??? WTF ??? more like a creeping black cancer taking over every community in a 40 mile radius of Baltimore… try telling the story of how no White or Asian in their right minds want’s to live around blacks ! blacks, crime & rats go hand in hand… wherever blacks go the neighborhood turns to sh*t… 🙁

    • Samuel Hathaway

Lovely photo you have, there. Sums it up about right.

      • John Smith

It looks like a relative of Michelle.

        • cherrie greenbaum123

          Much prettier than Michelle.

        • Samuel Hathaway

Actually, that just might be Michelle Obama…. She’a bit late for Halloween, though.

    • ghettovalley

You couldn’t pay me enough to even visit Baltimore. In my experience, once a city becomes about twelve to fifteen percent black it is on a downhill trajectory to failure. They breed like rabbits just released from prison, and they slowly kill every city they take over from within like a slow growing cancer.

  • IstvanIN

I grew up with many kids whose families had to move out of Philadelphia and across the river to SJ because of “Negros”, and it wasn’t because of gentrification, quite the opposite. Where is there history?

The homes many members of my family lived in in Camden are long gone, burned to the ground my “Negros”. They, too, were forced out by the authors “people”.

And, typical of his people, his article had to include the “D” and “F” words. Only a man to ignorant to express his self properly resorts to those words.

Baltimore is still a black hole and will never again be a truly liveable city from border to border. Pockets here and there, perhaps, but it will never truly be safe for White folks.

YT may win a battle or two but the Negro has won the war for Baltimore’s soul.

    • Whitetrashgang

Black holes consume eveything, it a law of nature.

  • Tim_in_Indiana

No, Baltimore is Chicago or New Orleans or any place where yuppie interests make black neighborhoods shrink like washed sweaters. A place where black history is bulldozed and replaced with Starbucks, Chipotles and Dog Parks.

And exactly what history have blacks created, except for slums? The one place he named was a white-created housing project.

I do love Baltimore but it’s becoming a place for the rich and I don’t speak their language.

No, the language he speaks is very typically black.

    • Keep Honkin, I’m Reloading

      The rich must use cursive…

  • Bon, From the Land of Babble

My city is gone, my history depleted, ruined and undocumented. I don’t know this new Baltimore, it’s alien to me.

Is this what your lamenting the loss of, what you wish to maintain?:

An increasing number of WHITE Baltimore residents and tourists have been victims of random, unprovoked attacks in the downtown area over the past month by roving groups of young BLACK people.

Many of the assaults, which have been reported in areas within walking distance of the harbor, follow a similar pattern. The victims report being attacked from behind while they walk, punched and kicked in the head and upper body by groups of BLACK males and females. Items are rarely taken, and few, if any, words are spoken.

Not even police are immune from the attacks: An off-duty officer from New Jersey said he and his girlfriend were beaten in the downtown area last weekend by males and females who he believed were gang members.

In 2012, this violence became so bad that Maryland State legislator Pat McDonough asked the Governor to declare a No-Travel Zone around the downtown Inner Harbor area. McDonough said he wanted to ‘prevent the consistent and dangerous attacks upon (WHITE) citizens by roving mobs of black youths.

    —Baltimore Sun, Feb. 2014

Or maybe it’s this he’s going to miss in the “new” Baltimore:

WHITE GIRL: ‘I’M TIRED OF BEING LOOKED AT LIKE PREY’

“I’m tired of being looked at like prey.”

“I’m tired of thinking about the horrifying final moments for 51 year old neighbor, Kim Leto, stabbed to death in her own home by two [black] teenagers.”

“I’m tired of wondering why city leaders haven’t said s*** about recent horrific murders committed by BLACKS children in supposedly safe neighborhoods.”

“I’m tired of living next to a beautiful park that I’m scared to walk into at any time of day, thanks to regular stories of day-time muggings, drug dealing and [black] gang violence.”

    wnd com/2014/02/white-girl-im-tired-of-being-looked-at-like-prey/#g4hRDWeFGKzPO0Oq 99

This is what the author wishes to maintain:

Baltimore police on Sunday arrested Allen Pinkney, 16, and Alonzo Gorham-Ramos, 14, on murder, first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree burglary and dangerous weapon with intent to injure charges. Around 7:30 a.m. Friday, officers found 51-year-old Kimberly Leto dead inside her home in the 400 block of South Ellwood Avenue. Police said Leto suffered from trauma to her body. The manner of Leto’s death is still pending from the State’s Medical Examiner.

My city is gone, my history depleted, ruined and undocumented. I don’t know this new Baltimore, it’s alien to me.

So said the Whites that conceived of, created and built the city of Baltimore – driven out by black violence.

    Go cry somewhere else.

  • Kit Ingoldby

When Whites leave, that’s ‘White Flight’ and is bad and proof that Whites are evil. When Whites arrive, that is ‘Gentri-fuckin-cation’ and is bad and proof that Whites are evil.

true story,I was down Goose Creek Maryland hanging out @ one of the sluff houses (soft crabs). Old BayMan ask where I was from… I say “WhiteMarsh” Old BayMan says,”no your not ,your from BLACK MARSH !” bout broke my heart… ever an Old BayMan ,back in the Eastern Shore marshes knew the Blacks had destroyed my home……… “Land of Pleasant Living” is just a memory….. 🙁

    • Charles Martel

White flight is called ethnic cleansing when it happens to others.

    • Susan

      Idiot-liberal-whites believe that as well.

    • When whites pay increased property taxes due to gentrification, property taxes that fund things like road repair and decent computers in public libraries – for folks who don’t have internet – or may not even have computers at home – that’s bad and proof that whites are evil.

  • D. Watkins is a real class act.

  • Cindy

“Visiting his old unit after his murder would’ve been therapeutically nostalgic for me but that place is gone and will never be back again.”
    _______
Let me guess. Was he murdered by a black man?

His memories are of “hanging out” but no mention of “working.”
He thinks Whitey gets rich because “opportunity rides the gentrification train into town.”
Again, no mention of the “work” and risk involved in gentrification.
You know, Whitey just magically makes money and has nice clean neighborhoods where people do more than hang out, shoot hoops and murder each other.
He can’t visit the old hood? Aww… poor baby. My mom would get mugged or worse if she visited the old neighborhood she grew up in. The neighborhood where her family actually worked, paid taxes, kept their house up, voted, didn’t do drugs, didn’t murder people.
But then blacks moved in and changed all that.

“10 shirtless white guys played two-hand-touch football in a fresh park that they would never build for us” Sigh. Have you ever hear of a thing called reciprocity? I’m told it is one of the building blocks of modern liberal society.

    • IstvanIN

Notice that those White-guys were playing touch football “in a fresh park that they would never build for us”, I bet he never thought about his fellow Negros building a park for themselves.

I guess its a good thing black and brown children evolved to not be curious

      • gemjunior

I saw that and thought the same thing. Imagine the novel idea of this negro doing something for himself? And the idea catching on?

      • Susan

Very good point. Negroes never think in terms of doing for themselves instead of expecting whites to do for them.

  • Dale McNamee

Thomas Mann said that : ” You can never go home “.

I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and visited my former homes… Both had become wrecks from being vacant for a long time. They had seen better days…

The Beatle’s song : ” In My Life ” is going through my head as I write this… The Moody Blues had a song lyric that said : ” You can never go home anymore ” as well.

  • Yeah, I sympathize: Just when you blacks put so much work into destroying a neighborhood, these damn White folks show up and want to make it an attractive place again! Gosh, the nerve.

  • gemjunior

I went to the original article and was surprised at the comments putting this whiner in his place. I thought salon was a liberal magazine but the comments sound like they come from us. LOL, well not QUITE us, but there isn”t much sympathy and he gets called out for wanting a park “built for us.” Well-deserved scorn is heaped on him…

    • Cindy

Yes, I went there too and noticed the same thing. I think Salon purposely posts articles like this as click bait. They make money getting people emotionally involved and upset. I’m not so sure Salon is even Liberal/Progressive. Just looking to make money.
I’m hoping this will eventually be the downfall of the Left. I remember the first season of Survivor. I was glued to my TV, I bought into the fantasy that these people were alone and on an island. I was completely unaware that a camera crew was involved too. Today, I find Survivor unwatchable, it looks scripted and just plain stupid. Same show different people.
Same with the Left and Mainstream Media. It’s scripted and boring. Not news at all. People are already getting bored with the “hate Whitey, stand up for all minorities and gays” alleged news stories that CNN & MSNBC run ad nauseam.
It’s nothing more than cheap, unimaginative boring re-runs at this point.

    • Alden

There’s a park in the Excelsior district of San Francisco. Someone who grew up in that neighbor hood when the blacks were taking it over told me the black kids would bring pillow cases full of stones to that park and throw stones at White kids who came to play.

So, when I read this last night at whatever in the evening, I was struck by this guy’s crass sense of entitlement. I’m sure I am not alone. I was a little offended.

But this morning, different things stick out at me. He is admitting that he does not feel at home in a clean and well run city. That the chaos he knew was more comfortable than the order that is coalescing. I think he is sincere. Perhaps he, and the Takieshya in your intro to literature class and the guy at your job who was just promoted to VP but doesn’t match number and tense on the subjects and verbs in his formal speech, will all come to the Jason Riley conclusion: Thanks, white people, for pushing us, it was sweet, but we’re really not on your schedule, best to leave us alone.

No one likes not being fit to their environment well. It is stressful. American blacks are smarter and more self aware than Robert Mugabe for the most part. Maybe they will agree with us when the time comes to go our separate ways. Or maybe it is just sunny and beautiful here in Chicago today and that has disposed me to be optimistic.

With all due respect, you’re giving them, way, way, waaaay, more credit for brains, logic, cause-effect than they possess. All they know is that YT is productive, gets off his tail, gets positive things done, and makes the cash from it. Negroes don’t know why they can’t do the same thing by sitting on their tails all day. They see nothing wrong with their behavior and don’t understand why they aren’t financially rewarded for it. Luckily for the negro, the Federal government is changing all that.

      • This crass Watkins dope certainly doesn’t have much in the intellect department. Boiled-down, he is complaining that developers buy inexpensive property and then develop it. Just why does he imagine they’re called “developers” in the first place?

      • Pa Guy in NJ

They feel that they can shout slogans and the food, house, and clothing will just appear, it has worked for them in the past. Actually doing stuff is too “white”.

  • Susan

Typical sniveling, black, pseudo-intellectual! They absolutely refuse to be mollified regardless of what’s done for them. It’s much more rewarding to be a perpetual whiner.

    • Pa Guy in NJ

This guy is not a pseudo-intellectual, he is brilliant by their standards.

      • Susan

        True, but still not good.

  • Susan

Guest, I sincerely doubt if he sees the parallel. That sort of awareness requires logic and common sense. Black brains don’t have the capacity for logic and common sense. His essay is a good example of that deficit.

  • ghettovalley

Another example is the way they demanded harsher penalties for selling crack. We didn’t care about their community. We did nothing to fix their problems. Fast forward twenty or thirty years and these same laws that they demanded are racist. After complying with their demands they decided that we were unfairly targeting them. You simply cannot win because they are perpetually playing the victim. Doing anything other than shifting the blame would basically be admitting that they’re too dysfunctional and frankly stupid to self-govern without our help. They will never admit to their social pathologies. If they really believed all the crap that they spew out of their mouths they would have separated and returned to Africa willingly a long time ago. I don’t know about you, but I am getting sick of their whining, and I don’t really care about the black community or its perpetual never-ending problems.

    • They believe all sorts of “interesting” things. A car wreck at a busy intersection at rush hour is invariably the result of a “bomb” planted by the Mafia.

      • I’ve heard blacks claim that every white car accident is really a mob style attempt at a “hit” for the driver being in arrears to a dope dealer.

        Projection, it’s a powerful thing.

The reality is gentrification only happens to wastelands., these minority hellholes were almost always once white thriving neighborhoods destroyed not by white flight white flight would simply make for an absence of whites they are destroyed by brown and black behavior and the lack there of. Litter crime and all manner of uncivilized activity is tolerated by the many and committed by far too many. White liberals attempts at helping out are sabotaged in numerous ways and these place decline to barbarism spreading their contagion as the predators fan out in search of wealthier prey. Sometimes this destroys an entire city or state sometimes its somewhat contained and eventually the utter worthlessness of areas near city centers waterfronts historical centers etc brings in speculators and a few brave whites. These gentrifications are sometimes holistic whereas the cheap real estate entices artists and young whites to stake out an are sometimes its more corporate where city fathers black leaders and money men conspire to remake an area. Either way anythings better than a slum and you needn’t sell your house to buy coffee at starbucks. If your an indigent well you dont get a say where someone else is willing to support you. The so called black history is almost always recent seedy and a excuse for reparations the blacks worth a damn are always glad the neighborhoods improving. It’s the black poverty pimps and white marxists that chant gentrification.

    • In St. Louis, urban gentrification almost always centers on neighborhoods that never succumbed to the black undertow. Neighborhoods whose original white working class ethnic constitution aged out, but aged out at such a time where urban gentrification started and the blacks didn’t have an opportunity to wreck them. There have been some attempts to try to gentrify areas that have been black for awhile, including the area where St. Sandwich of Ham assumed room temperature late last year, but with very uneven success.

  • falskog

I can relate to this, my white neighborhood is gone too, changed beyond recognition into another Chinatown in NYC, I am lost, this is not the place I remember in the 90ties

  • Screamin_Ruffed_Grouse

This isn’t the place I grew up in. Corporate dollars are cleansing this city of everything I loved…

I understand that those now-demolished neighborhoods came with murder, pain, heartbreak, high teen pregnancy rates, illiteracy, gang violence and a host of other reasons that led to their implosions.

Yes, you primitive simpleton, those things are the filth being cleansed from “your” city.

I’m no fan of Starbucks and corporate chains, but I’ll take anything that will diminish or remove the black infestation from my hometown. This ***hole talks about “black Baltimore” as if that’s the natural state of the city; the way it’s always been. The Baltimore of my father and my grandfather was hardly paradise, but it was a functioning city of a million people or close to it. Hardnosed, hard working enclaves of Irish, Polish, Italian and other European descendants maintained decent and livable neighborhoods based on family, industry and pride.

What is this piece of ghetto trash proud of? Guzzling Hennessey and getting brawls at 4am? Dilapidated housing projects where his homies murdered each other and impregnated twelve year-olds? Oh yeah, so sorry to lose your oh-so-soulful “culture.”

So to answer his question about whose opportunity it is: the greatest opportunity Baltimore or any other city can have, is that its black history be entirely swept away, and remembered only as a precautionary tale.

    • newscomments70

I was going to mention those items in my rant, as well. You did a fine job though, no need.

  • Screamin_Ruffed_Grouse

Most of the comments on the OA are fairly encouraging. So there’s that.

  • Vito Powers

Here’s another gem from the same Negro “writer”

    Gunplay is all I know

  • listenupbub

You can have all the black community you can handle in Ferguson, Detroit, and Africa.

  • mitchmcc

Why doesn’t Morgan Freeman step in and solve black problems, like he does for whites in the movies?

  • LHathaway

This is the funniest article I’ve read in days, if not weeks. I think the author may be trying to do comedy. I’m not sure.

  • John Smith

This is what passes for one.

  • LHathaway

“I do love Baltimore but it’s becoming a place for the rich and I don’t speak their language”

lol, it seems White guilt is a universal language.

  • LHathaway

    if only it were true.

  • ElComadreja

Any gibberish written by a black should either be laughed at or ignored.

  • Christopher Perrien

Sad, when a “Starbucks” is considered improvement, anywhere.

  • newscomments70

“Their eyes grew. You would’ve thought I just pulled my **** out…’Gentri-f*ckin-cation,” I say. “Gentri-f*ckin-cation is why I don’t know.'” Wow, I’m really impressed with this guy. He seems to be going places in the world. Unlike the angry black female, Lea, who has been recently posting comments, he realizes he is being replaced. Liberal media and advertising still glorify the black male, and “urban culture”, but it is being phased out. Rich white liberals, hispanics, and Persians (or similar) are taking over US cities, which were once dominated by blacks. The foul-mouthed writeer of this article complains that there were no oppurtunities, even though his bretheren were given billions of dollars in government handouts, as well as free education. It’s not just Section 8 housing and EBT. There were and are generous government loans available for minority owned businesses. What the hell else does one need? Instead of drinking Hennessy, getting high, and making girls pregant, you do this: take business courses, get a loan, and open a local business. Intead of being pushed out, buy property, open a restaurant, bar, hotel. They missed the boat. Foreigners and silly liberal yuppies (white) are taking their place. As pastor Manning in Harlem often laments, “Blacks missed their chance of a lifetime”.

  • chuck_2012

This writer bemoans the fact that money is pushing the negro out of this community and it cannot be a bad thing. Beleaguered american cities, struggling with a population of miscreants and welfare recipients can maybe see some light at the end of the tunnel as taxpaying businesses and citizens move back to these areas.

  • De Doc

Is this Howard Schultz’s (CEO of Starbucks) idea of ‘Race Together’? #gentrify

  • MartelsGhost

did salon just find some bum to write this article or is this actually just a comedy piece?

  • Pa Guy in NJ

I love how they must be profane to make a point, like kids looking for any kind of attention.

“My city is gone, my history depleted, ruined and undocumented.” Maybe they should have written some stuff down rather than making more babies to abandon.

“Corporate dollars are cleansing this city of everything I loved.” He is right “cleansing” is the correct word.

Maybe he should have fired a few rounds off into a crowd after his meeting, for old-times sake.

  • Seniorsquadldr

Apartheid is the only answer. Complete separation of the races. White wiggers and Negros together, need a homeland free of white devils. They can then reach the heights of civilization.

  • GuatemalanHousekeeper

What’s stopping the blax from gentrifying their own neighborhoods? No one’s telling them they can’t do it themselves.

  • nordicman

Yeah, ‘evil racist whites’ moving into a black area and making it nice and creating businesses and reducing crime is FAR WORSE than blacks and browns moving into white areas, turning them into ghettos, chasing out industry and violently attacking whites.
