Al Sharpton Dodges Racism Debate at Oxford Union, Will Deliver Prepared Speech

Breitbart, January 21, 2015

This Friday, the Oxford Union in London will hold a debate about race relations in the United States. MSNBC host Al Sharpton accepted an invitation to the event, but after confirming he would be one of the participants to propose the motion that the United States is “institutionally racist,” he did an about face, shocking his esteemed hosts.

Sharpton was supposed to defend his proposition along with Black Panther leader Aaron Dixon and liberal blogger Mychal Denzel Smith, while SiriusXM host, Breitbart News, and Fox News Contributor David Webb; conservative commentator Joe R. Hicks; and BBC radio host Charlie Wolf would oppose the motion in a structured Oxford-style debate.

The Oxford Union has committed to continue with the debate, which will be held this Friday, January 23rd. The debate details are on their website at oxford-union.org.

Sources have indicated that Sharpton, who is an informal adviser to both President Obama and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, has asked Oxford for an opportunity to speak but not debate the counter argument. {snip}

Oxford will allow Sharpton to speak for 20 minutes before the debate but will also have to answer questions from the audience, Webb, Hicks, and Wolf. {snip}

{snip}

The debate will be taped and aired on David Webb’s SiriusXM Patriot radio show Monday, January 26 at 9PM Eastern time. Additional coverage by Breitbart News, Fox News Network, and worldwide media is expected. The Oxford Union YouTube channel will have the full debate following its conclusion.

Sharpton is a success because he plays to his audience with inflammatory rhetoric like saying ‘racism’, ‘white privilege’, ‘inequality’ etc. and appealing to low IQ people who respond to emotional arguments not facts.

Sharpton is out of his element in a debate where he isn’t surround by a team of supporters to feed him ideas.

    • Publius Pompilius Quietus

Further, all participants agree to the same basic antiracist assumptions. If Oxford wanted a true debate on race, they would have invited John Derbyshire.

      • JohnEngelman

And Jared Taylor, J. Philippe Rushton, Charles Murray, Arthur Jensen. The list goes on and on.

How would I come back from the dead?

    • propagandaoftruth

Al is wise enough to know what a fool he would look like actually debating anyone over anything. Must keep up appearances.

      • I doubt that. Someone more intelligent and aware probably told him what a debate is after he agreed to participate, and talked him out of doing it. He would not have known what an actual debate is.

Oxford Union debates, like Oxford itself, have sadly deteriorated since I was an undergraduate.

    • Oil Can Harry

So the debates became dumbed-down when the number of white male participants dropped?

      Surely a coincidence…

      • Daniel McGrath

When hate speech laws were enacted the debate more or less ended. The questions they answered also changed radically.

      • David Ashton

The worst ones were originally the white leftists of e.g. the Joint Action Committee Against Racism, but the factors you have in mind have made things far worse.

    • Daniel McGrath

  • superlloyd

Sharpton is a coward who can only perform to the low IQ undertow. Pitted in a serious debate against normal people he shows his true colour 0 yellow. What an idiot.

  • Samuel Hathaway

Big-Mouth Al won’t deliver so much a prepared speech as he will delivered carefully crafted lies. How much is being charged to deliver these lies? And is it to raise funds to pay off his back taxes? LOL,. What a joke.

  • Al Sharpton is allowed to enter the UK, while Geert Wilders isn’t.

    • Add Michael Savage to the list.

    • Tim_in_Indiana

Must be more of that “White privilege” at work.

  • Daniel McGrath

America is institutionally White Supremacist. Or at least is was whilst it was a successful going concern. Now? It’s black run.

    • Cheri Rodriguez

Blacks would rather rule in hell than serve in Heaven.

      • anony

Wherever there are blacks, there is hell.

    • Samuel Hathaway

Corporate America is institutionally Black Supremacist, with all the worn, tired, talk about diversity and worshiping at the altar of the NAACP and Black Enterprise to be put on their pet list of best places to work for blacks.

  • Daniel McGrath

Sharpton’s problem is that America was racist, white run and successful. Now it’s anti-white, black run and a failure.

    • Samuel Hathaway

Sharptons beef is that white people exist, create the greatest civilizations for the benefit of the most people, that blacks don’t and Sharpton is jealous, can’t stand it, and determined to destroy it. He can’t stand that he can’t be white.

  • Coward.
But again no surprise. The “national conversation on race” that Holder spoke about has to be a lecture, not a real two way conversation.

    • Obamination

There is no such thing as a two-way conversation on race. It’s just a lecture of how racist everyone else is. It’s funny how “African-American” people hate white people, hispanics, asians, jews, middle-eastern people, and other black people not from America, but everyone else has the problem, not them. Since Barack is half black and half white, and hates white people, I wonder if he yells at himself in the mirror and calls the white side of him racist?

  • Rhialto

Rev. Sharpton knows that he is not able to effectively debate, and would make a fool out of himself. He wisely will avoid the debate. Just as if vicious thugs invaded my home, I would not use my inadequate rusty martial arts skills, I would use my fire arms.

    • Mack0

Take a look at the other fools that are showing up. Its going to be one long rant about how horrible white people are. The opposition will try to debate and these jokers will overreact emotionally. They will not make one rational argument. It will be emotional appeal after emotional appeal.

  • Mack0

Sharpton and his kind don’t want a conversation or a debate. They want to lecture. For them there is nothing to discuss or debate. They are right and everyone else are bigots. Another possibility is they didn’t offer that sleaze bag Sharpton enough money.

    • Spikeygrrl

They don’t want a conversation, a debate, OR a lecture. They want a feral, howling mob to burn down what’s left of [White] Western Civilization.

      There, fixed it.

  • JohnEngelman

Al Sharpton knows that he can only be impressive in front of an audience that agrees with him. Haranguing an angry black crowd is quite a bit different than persuading a panel of professional debate judges.

  • JohnEngelman

This reminds me of that conversation on race liberals keep pretending that they want. What they really want is for them to talk, and us to listen. They want us to behave like children who are being scolded for having done what they knew was bad.

  • guest

This is why there could never be an honest debate about race. Those who claim to want it can’t actually handle the truth and are too afraid of the racial honesty that comes with such a debate. And by dodging a racism debate to make a one-sided speech, Al Sharpton has proven himself to be the real coward here.

  • Steve_in_Vermont

Al Sharpton long ago learned the value of scripted presentations, matching his words to his audience. While on script he sounds good. But take away the script, and if he has to “ad lib”, things fall apart. Open debates are dangerous territory for him. He would actually have to talk AND THINK at the same time, not relying on a prepared script. He could save everyone a lot of time by simply sending them copies of his speech and staying home. And BTW, if he does give a speech and take questions look for “stock” answers or, if he can’t think of any, watch him deflect the questions.

    • Augustus3709

Have you seen the compilation of him screwing up on MSNBC? Even with a script he can’t do it right.

  • Frank_DeScushin

Al likely originally wanted to be in the debate because he loves any and all attention, and he likely thought he could do well because his ego is bigger than his brain. Then somebody who knew Al and realized he’d get destroyed in a debate format probably pulled him aside and suggested a prepared statement rather than a debate so that the black side didn’t get trounced.

    • LHathaway

The article suggests he dropped out of the debate because he didn’t want to argue that American is institutionally racist. This is a debate that should be heard, and even more so, the reasons why America is institutionally racist.

      • He’s not intellectually capable of classic debate which is what Oxford does. Debate is for people with agile minds and sophisticated, intelligent ideas, not standing up there spewing lies, vitriol, & blaming whites. I’d like to hear his trite phrases & nonsense about why he thinks America is institutionally racist, though.

        • LHathaway

I thought he would have sounded right smart to you, dropping out for the reason professed.

  • MekongDelta69

    Sharp-Tonnage = punk

  • Caucasoid88

Sharpton’s going to lose on merit, but win in the eyes of the liberal Oxford crowd.

    • Notice the only man in that pic (if that is a man, you never know) wearing some sort of six star thing around his neck. I think that’s Black Hebrew-Israelite.

      • Caucasoid88

Ha. Good catch. I listened to some of the debate. One of them actually said, “I be having dreams of chocolate-covered watermelons, filled with fried chicken like pinatas.” I think he got second place nationally.

      • WoodyBBad

Probably a rastafarian thing. They have appropriated the Star of David.

    • Daniel McGrath

Oxford is still a bastion of Toffs. Family fortunes made in Jamaica, Malaya or India. They know how the world works.

  • Will Al-Not-So-Sharpton be debating like the black Towson University debate team? You know, the two black female debaters who were talking so fast they could barely catch their breath and kept using the “N’ word? Or will it be like the two black male debaters who were wearing African attire, rapping their speech, and screaming incoherently?

C’mon, let’s be honest: That’s about the little frog’s level of ability when it comes to being able to speak and think on his feet.

  • E. Newton

Don’t expect “our” side of the debate to say anything meaningful. It will be full of measured language and replete with all the standard platitudes. No white person can speak honestly about what is before us.

  • Luca

Al is much better at chanting slogans, answering questions that have not been asked, changing the subject and name calling.

Expecting him to stick to formal debate rules and actually make sensible, lucid rebuttals is far outside his realm of competency.

  • WR_the_realist

Yes, the United States is institutionally racist — against whites.

  • Ed

Debate, well traditional debate, requires an agile, intelligent mind. One needs to have a firm grasp on the facts. Clearly Al knows he is lacking in that department. He should have just quit the debate altogether. I suspect the questions will be screened favorably for him.

  • Whirlwinder

Sharpton could not debate because he does not know what that is. He can only spew inflammable garbage.

    • Spikeygrrl

Thanks for posting that so I didn’t have to. Sharpton wouldn’t comprehend the civilized structure of formal debate even if it jumped up and bit him in the butt.

  • antiquesunlight

They should have told him to jump in a lake. What a coward. If “our” side puts any kind of thought and effort into this at all, they will embarrass the opposition badly. I can’t wait.

  • WoodyBBad

Of course the U.S. is institutionally racist…against whites. If any other group based on race wishes to assemble, it’s all fine. If white people wish to peaceably assemble, they’re a hate group!

  • B.A_2014

I’ve never heard of any of the people opposing the motion. I would pay serious money to see JT and the Derb crush these clown at Oxford.

  • Katherine McChesney

Billy Graham has issues but he NEVER did it for the money.

  • Katherine McChesney

He made his money honestly from writing books and from some speaking engagements. He doesn’t deserve to be put in the same category as Creflo Dollar and the prosperity tv preachers. You’re just jealous of his success.

  • Al isn’t intellectually capable of debate. He obviously didn’t know what formal debate is or he wouldn’t have agreed to participate in the first place. That black panther leader isn’t capable, either. It’s far more than just spewing hatred, lies, and blaming whites which is all those two do when they speak.

  • I’m not a Graham fan (I’m not even religious), but I agree with Katherine that he doesn’t deserve to be in a list with Creflo A. Dollar and his ilk. As mercenary as Graham is he’ll never be as useless as the others.

  • And he wouldn’t even know that it happened. Al doesn’t even know what he doesn’t know.
