U.S. to Allow People from Nations Hit by Ebola to Stay Temporarily

Julia Edwards, Reuters, November 20, 2014

The Department of Homeland Security will grant temporary protected status to people from the three West African countries most affected by Ebola who are currently residing in the United States, department officials said on Thursday.

People from Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone in the United States as of Thursday may apply for protection from deportation, as well as for work permits, for 18 months, said a Department of Homeland Security official.

After 18 months, the Secretary of Homeland Security will assess whether the protection should be extended, based on the level of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

In order to prevent a mass migration from West Africa to the United States, nationals from these countries who arrive after Thursday will not be eligible for protected status.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials estimate that 8,000 people will be eligible to apply.

The United States reserves temporary protected status for people from countries experiencing conditions deemed too dangerous to return to, such as Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.

Unlike other recipients, protected people from West Africa will not be allowed to travel home and then return to the United States, in order to prevent the disease from spreading.

Nationals from the three countries must undergo a background check in order to receive protected status. {snip}

  • “Temporarily”

    They spelled “permanently” wrong.

BTW, a maybe Ebola case has hit St. Louis.

    • Ebola in St. Louis? Yet another reason to quarantine it if you ask me.

      • Ike Eichenberg

        Nuke it

Only Ebola can save us from Obamnesty.

    • Ed

I heard about one in Brooklyn too.

  • phorning

The article says the West Africans will not be allowed to travel home and then return to the United States.
    1. I doubt the government will enforce that.
    2. Why would they want to return home?

    • mike j

      1. Probably not.
      2. To show their relatives how generous our welfare system is.

“Nationals from the three countries must undergo a background check…”

Right, because the immigration authorities are SO thorough in weeding out undesirables from entering our country..

    • Mary

Yeah, if that doesn’t inspire bitter laughter…

Quarantine is a racist denial of human rights, isn’t it?

    • Max

This was one of the oft repeated phrases when this whole Ebola epidemic erupted.

In a pamphlet published by CDC for medical workers they actually list “racism” as a cause of the high incidence of HIV among blacks in the US. Any time that any factor adversely affects non-whites there is racism to blame somewhere in the sequence of events.

      • David Ashton

Has anyone worked out how “racism” actually causes HIV? In Britain “homophobia” instead of homosexuality is sometimes given as a cause.

        • Max

Some of the assertions run along the lines of gay blacks not seeking medical treatment for fear of some homophobic repercussions in the socially conservative “black community” (as if…), poverty (which we all know is due to discrimination against blacks), “lack of education” again, due to discrimination against blacks. There need be no empiric data supporting the claims. The proximate cause is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer; HIV owes in significant part to racism. These are not elaborated in the CDC brochure which I referenced. Those are just common excuses I’ve seen “around”.
Personal actions or inactions are only notable in the sense that blacks act inappropriately in response to bad conditions imposed on them by whites.

African “sex workers” in Europe spread various STDs including HIV, but that is a risk their male clients take on and spread to others. The “liberal” mind seeks to find vaccines to enable pansexual hedonism and to tax the “puritans” to pay for hospital treatment for its predictable casualties.

BHO, Holder and Sharpton are going to let as many third worlders into this country as they can.

    • benvad

Why do you think they do it? Do they want guarantee future Democrat wins or is it just to rub the white mans face in it?

I haven’t quite figured it out yet.

  • DaveMed

Damn. Maybe we should have sent more bleeding-heart doctors and meds over there.

  • WR_the_realist

There is one thing I know for certain: This is not temporary. Those Ebola victims have a “Stay in America Forever Card” and they know it. Ask yourself: Has there ever been any group of refugees given permission to stay here temporarily that were ever sent home?

  • Guest

Set them up in the White House or Nancy Pelosi’s house.

  • Max

I’ve been telling people that I thought that they would start giving these invaders some sort of “medical refugee” status or something and here we are.

    Geez! WHERE does it stop?!

    • Bobbala

When the US looks like Vice News: Liberia. They’ll start leaving in search of white racism … Just like in Liberia.

      • Max

As far as I can tell, vast swaths of the US already look like Liberia. They’re called “cities”.

        • Bobbala

It’s not that bleak yet … you need to get around.

  • Biff_Maliboo

It may take some time, but I’m still certain that it will eventually be considered ‘racist’ if you don’t have Ebola.

  • benvad

They’re religious brethren push for this soo much let them reap the benefits.
