Doris Payne, 83-Year-Old Jewelry Thief, Back in Jail

Adolfo Flores, Los Angeles Times, September 18, 2014

Doris Payne, the 83-year-old jewelry thief with a criminal record that goes back to the 1950s, was back in jail Thursday.

Payne was being held at a jail in Indio on a violation of mandatory supervision, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Riverside County district attorney’s office. {snip}

Payne pleaded not guilty to the violation and was due back in court on Oct. 2 for a hearing.

The 5-foot, 6-inch, 141-pound Payne made headlines last year when she was arrested for swiping a $22,500 diamond-and-white-gold ring from El Paseo Jewelers in a Palm Desert shopping center.

In April, Payne was sentenced to four years in custody–two in county jail, two under mandatory supervision–after pleading guilty to one felony count each of burglary and grand theft, Hall said.

Deputy Armando Munoz, a spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, said Payne was released early from one of its jails on July 8 due to overcrowding.

Hey – when you’ve made a life-long career at being good at something, why retire?!

[You really want a lucid comment about a ludicrous woman?]

    • Nancy

You think she just figured, “Eh? Who’s gonna be suspicious of an ol’ lady?”

That mentality is actually quite common, especially since my mom’s generation are now senior citizens. I was born in ’67, and my mom and her Woodstock-partying buddies still have “Girl’s Weekend” a few times a year, where they go to a cabin in upstate PA and party like it’s 1966. The local cops are busy chasing teenagers to go raid a cabin full of aging hippies.

  • IstvanIN

Wow, pretty spunky at 83. Reminds me of those old White people who enter marathons and such, although I suppose this lady can not out-run the police like she used to. Perhaps she needs to ply her trade in a retirement community?

  • Samuel_Morton

El Paseo Jewelers should consider themselves culturally enriched.

    • me

They should have a statue made in her honor, and put it in central Detroit. She’s the ‘Rosa Parks’ of jewelry rights.

  • B.A_2014

she beez da reel O.G Niggaz!

  • B.A_2014

  • Biff_Maliboo

    A true civil rights pioneer.

Her epitaph will read: “She Kept It Rills, Yo.”

Reminds of something that will stay with me until the day I die. I was at a shopping mall in Florida and an old black woman of at least 80 was walking hunched over with a cane in front of me. This was about two years ago but she was still clearly living in the 80’s, with some kind of jheri curl nastiness running all down her head. Anyway, apparently she had forgotten something or for some reason decided to turn around abruptly and almost ran into me. I looked down and saw the big stenciled letters on her t-shirt – “HATERS GONNA HATE”

And great socialist. Cradle to grave parasite. So cute!

  • Released on July 8 due to overcrowding? WTF? Career criminals deserve life in prison. Even when they look like Aunt Jemima.

    • MBlanc46

Well, a skinny Aunt J, anyway.

      • bilderbuster

Uncle Ben done left dis ho an her skinny az fo Aunt Jemima’s big booty an she been stealin’ ever since.

    • me

Implying that ‘Aunt Jemima’ is ‘cute’….

  • Shadow

I always knew the assumption that elderly black women were all kindly, church going old ladies was a myth. This story further proves it.

    • bilderbuster

I’d bet da farm dat her have bouts 100 descendants.

      • me

If Obama had a Negro grandmother….

        • bilderbuster

That was my first thought when I saw the photo, but she would be in Kenya.

          • Laura Dilworth

            unless she immigrated here

        • Laura Dilworth

he does have a negro grandmother on his father’s side

          • bilderbuster

He had to have a Negro grandfather on his father’s side too.
But fifty bucks says that Obama’s father grew up in a single parent mud hut just like most Blacks and didn’t know his father either.

          • Laura Dilworth

his dad probably had numerous wives

          • bilderbuster

He may have but he died driving drunk before he could make any more Obama’s to bless Africa with.

  • White Mom in WDC

Old habits die hard and damn dis be an ole biache!

  • none of your business

I’ve heard of her off and on over the years, but I never knew her race until I saw her picture. Of course if she had been named Latrina her race would be obvious.

  • 48224

She is a pioneer in black female theft. Her birthday should be made a holiday.

  • A Freespeechzone

It is racism that forced this civil rights pioneer to take what she feels is hers.

  • Katherine McChesney

She certainly looks proud of what she’s done.

    • OS-Q

Any attention is good attention – it’s like how a retarded dog thinks.

    • me

She stuck it to ‘the man’, and ‘the man’ let the old hag go free. Why wouldn’t she look smug and/or proud of her Black Teflon Coating?

  • MBlanc46

“Released early”. It’s standard operating procedure to release black felons early. The keep doing it until the miscreant finally kills someone.

    • me

Well, hopefully a White person could fight her off. She is in a wheelchair. Of course, she’s probably packing heat under her lap robe.

  • none of your business

I bet she works on commission filling orders from people who want good jewelry at low prices. She would have sold it to her customer for maybe $12,000.

    • Who Me?

Naw, She’d pawned it for 1/10th of it’s worth and pocked the $$$.

      • me

Nah. She didn’t pocket nuffins. She spent it all on blunts and fawtys.

  • Alucard_the_last

From ‘berf’ to ‘deaf’, all they know is how to steal.

    • me

The ‘gibs me dat’ never dies, it just gets old….ha ha.

  • Paleoconn

The Rosa Parks of jewelry theft.

  • Christorchaos

Dont you know? Black people have more soul than white people. They do not need jewelry, furs, nice cars etc….

  • ViktorNN

I’m trying not to think of the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of taxpayer dollars spent on processing her through the criminal justice system. Some people can’t function in a modern society. They are such a drag on our system, I really don’t think penal colonies are too radical of a solution. Life is short – why put up with them?
