Immigration Is Destroying America

Patrick J. Buchanan, VDARE, July 14, 2014

Speaking to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Albuquerque in 2001, George W. Bush declared that, as Mexico was a friend and neighbor, “It’s so important for us to tear down our barriers and walls that might separate Mexico from the United States.”

Bush succeeded. And during his tenure, millions from Mexico exploited his magnanimity to violate our laws, trample upon our sovereignty, walk into our country, and remain here.

In 2007, backed by John McCain, Hillary Clinton, Teddy Kennedy and Barack Obama, Bush backed amnesty for the 12 million people who had entered America illegally.

The nation thundered no. And Congress sustained the nation.

The latest mass border crossing by scores of thousands of tots, teenagers and toughs from Central America has killed amnesty in 2014, and probably for the duration of the Obama presidency.

Indeed, with the massive media coverage of the crisis on the border, immigration, legal and illegal, and what it portends for our future, could become the decisive issue of 2014 and 2016.

But it needs to be put in a larger context. {snip}

The real issue: Will America remain one nation, or are we are on the road to Balkanization and the breakup of America into ethnic enclaves? For, as Ronald Reagan said, a nation that cannot control its borders isn’t really a nation anymore.

{snip}

We were not a nation of immigrants in 1789.

They came later. From 1845-1849, the Irish fleeing the famine. From 1890-1920, the Germans. Then the Italians, Poles, Jews and other Eastern Europeans. Then, immigration was suspended in 1924.

From 1925 to 1965, the children and grandchildren of those immigrants were assimilated, Americanized. In strong public schools, they were taught our language, literature and history, and celebrated our holidays and heroes. We endured together through the Depression and sacrificed together in World War II and the Cold War.

By 1960, we had become truly one nation and one people.

America was not perfect. No country is. But no country ever rivaled what America had become. She was proud, united, free, the first nation on earth. And though the civil rights movement had just begun, nowhere did black peoples enjoy the freedom and prosperity of African-Americans.

Attorney General Eric Holder said Sunday that America is today in “a fundamentally better place than we were 50 years ago.”

In some ways that is so. Equality of rights has been realized. Miraculous cures in medicine have kept alive many of us who would not have survived the same maladies half a century ago.

But we are no longer that “band of brethren.” We are no longer one unique people “descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion.”

We are from every continent and country. Nearly 4 in 10 Americans trace their ancestry to Asia, Africa and Latin America. We are a multiracial, multilingual, multicultural society in a world where countless countries are being torn apart over race, religion and roots.

We no longer speak the same language, worship the same God, honor the same heroes or share the same holidays. Christmas and Easter have been privatized. Columbus is reviled. Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee are out of the pantheon. Cesar Chavez is in.

Our politics have become poisonous. Our political parties are at each other’s throats.

Christianity is in decline. Traditional churches are sundering over moral issues like abortion and same-sex marriage. Islam is surging.

Our society seems to be disintegrating. Over 40 percent of all births now are illegitimate. Among Hispanics, the figure is 52 percent. Among African-Americans, 73 percent.

{snip}

If a country is a land of defined and defended borders, within which resides a people of a common ancestry, history, language, faith, culture and traditions, in what sense are we Americans one nation and one people today?

Neocons say we are a new kind of nation, an ideological nation erected upon a written Constitution and Bill of Rights.

But equality, democracy and diversity are not mentioned in the Constitution. As for what our founding documents mean, even the Supreme Court does not agree.

More and more, 21st-century America seems to meet rather well Metternich’s depiction of Italy–”a geographic expression.”

Whenever someone says ‘we’re a nation of immigrants’, tell them, ‘No. We’re a nation of legal immigrants’.

    ”a geographic expression.”

The geographic are of the US is a magical space. Once you cross the border, you’re magically transformed into an ‘American’.

That seems to be the belief.

The magic, is of course, white people maintaining white social, political standards. Once whites are reduced to a minority, the ‘magic’ will be greatly diminished and the demise likely inevitable.

    • an nation of legal White immigrants not backwaters from the 3rd world.

      • Steven Williams

Non-whites are a disgust to this country. I wish there was a US government that would evict all non-whites back to their origin homelands. I wish there was a law that would ban non-whites from coming into this country even for tourist purposes. This country was founded by Europeans and is a European homeland.

    • SentryattheGate

Political correctness instructs us to say ‘we’re a nation of immigrants’, but we are a nation of European immigrants! Our ancestors here made this nation the liberty-minded, powerful, creative, wealthy nation that we became; with the largest middle class in history. Immigration laws maintained the demographics until the disasterous 1965 Immig.Act (c/o Ted Kennedy), when the Third World started “crashing our party”! It’s been downhill since! Pat Buchanan has been warning US for decades; considered “radical” until enough people started awakening from their political-correctness zombie state.

    • connorhus

I tell them we are a Nation of Colonist and pioneers and there is nothing left to colonize without removing those who are already here. It sometimes makes them stop and think. Sometimes.

      • bilderbuster

        “Colonists, pioneers and settlers”.
The legal immigrants came after the nation was established.

    • Greg Thomas

I tell them we were a nation of immigrants, White European immigrants. The 1965 Hart-Cellar act changed that forever.

  • But should we impeach Obama for his hand in the border surge and administrative amnesty in general?

    “No no no,” says PJB.

    • SentryattheGate

He’s certainly no Nerobama supporter, but realizes the details involved, more so than we do, I’m sure. Impeachment would not get through the Democrat-controlled Senate (which holds the trial), and besides, Biden would be no better! Besides, Republican and Democrat presidents since Clinton have officially signed on to the NAU (North American Union, combining Canada, US and Mexico/erasing the borders). It’s been a stealth plan for decades, like what was done to the Europeans, resulting in the EU, without internal borders, swamped by immigrants!

      • shatwood

        Impeachment is a stupid idea.

Obama is in serious trouble of losing the senate in the fall. It would be ridiculous for the GOP to impeach the President and then…..have it obviously voted down in the Senate. It will go NOWHERE, and the GOP will have egg on their face.

All the while the impeachment process is going on, the left will be in full on “THIS IS BECAUSE HE’S THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT!” mode and will rally minority voters everywhere to show up for the midterms, something they don’t do period.

Barack Obama is hanging himself already with his foreign policy, the border issue, national debt, unemployment, Obamacare. An impeachment process will ONLY distract from these issues as coverage of the impeachment will dominate every headline.

Obama and the Dems are heading toward a landslide loss in the fall.

Republicans need to let the bad news continue to roll out and dominate the headlines while they avoid shooting themselves in the foot.

Impeachment IS the act of shooting themselves in the foot.

        • Because…YAY RED TEAM~! Take that Senate away from Harry Reid and give it to Mitch McConnell. Then all our problems will be solved, simply because Republicans will run Senate committees and have a much easier time at writing spending and appropriations and other bills giving Federal goodies to Republican oriented donors and special interests, and that’s so much better than it going to Democrats’ donors and special interests.

Really though, if impeachment is going to happen, it should be on one count and only on one issue: Immigration, namely his flat out refusal to enforce Federal immigration law, his administrative amnesty, and his part in encouraging the Camp of the Saints. Even if it does not actually result in his removal, it gets public attention singularly focused on immigration and the national question even more intensely than it is now. And it’s impeachment over a substantive issue.

But it won’t happen. Why would Boehner bring an impeachment bill for a reason that he believes himself, that the borders should be open and immigration law should not be enforced?

You mention Obama’s “foreign policy” troubles. Those are really nothing more than delayed onset of neo-conservative foreign policy treachery, even though Obama shows no indication of changing course. What laughably passes for criticism of Obama on FoPo from many Republicans and neo-cons goes like this: Obama isn’t invade-the-world enough. And I’m sure Obama is glad to hear that criticism, because he knows how the public will react.

    • TruthBeTold

Impeachment would be tough and PJB knows it.

Impeach for what exactly? It’s difficult to find a clearly defined impeachable action.

Do you believe we could impeach him for not enforcing our borders? He could easily say he did and it’s provable; he just hasn’t done a very good job. How do you prove that as an impeachable offense?

PB is right on this one. Everything he has done is vague and Obama could easily worm his way out of any indictment.

It might make you feel better if we tried but since it won’t stick, it would only give the opposition more power when it was over.

Do you really want to give him a huge victory?

    Q. How many people (who were born here) have fled the United States (or some entity which is controlled by the U.S.) to live in a 9th world hell-hole?

    A. One (that I know of).
    The deserter Bergdahl.

(Who has been glorified by our dictator and his regime (while a combat jarhead rots in a Mexican jail), and will now receive more bennies than I, or any of my Teammates – or any Active or Vet ever has, or will.)

By 1960, we had become truly one nation and one people.

The de facto immigration moratorium of the Depression and the Second White Civil War ensured that the mystery meat European immigrants from earlier in the century had time to assimilate. American immigration has traditionally come in bursts, and usually from semi-industrial, civilized nations long accustomed to the rule of law.

What is happening now has no precedent in the history of any nation, despite what the peddlers of mass-immigration in Washington and in the media keep repeating. Mass-immigration itself is not new, but in the form of invasion it has destroyed all nations which it has in the past afflicted. We are entering uncharted territory. It is doubtful America can ever return to its former greatness from this precipice it now faces. Here be dragons…

    • Einsatzgrenadier

It’s no surprise that America reached her zenith between the years 1924 to 1965, when the country received very few immigrants and those few immigrants were coming from Europe. Third world immigration has almost totally wrecked this country. It threatens to submerge our civilization in the permanent dark age of third world occupation. At least the Germanic barbarians who invaded and colonized Rome had the ability to pick up the pieces and put them back together again, although this occurred 1000 years after the abolition of the empire in the west. The same cannot be said for the modern barbarians of the third world and their ongoing brutal rampage in all western democracies.

      • Bossman

The USA was at its zenith during those times because it had worn a great war and was the leader in manufacturing during most of those times. Most Third Worlders who are coming legally to the USA these days are from Asia.

        • Einsatzgrenadier

No, what made America great was its white racial homogeneity. Do you seriously think an America with a majority population of mestizos and indios would be able to win great wars against the European powers or become the world’s great manufacturing centre?

Most of the third world trash washing up on American shores is coming from Latin America, although there is a large influx of invaders from Asia.

        • TruthBeTold

That’s definitely part of it. Unlike the UK, France, Germany, Japan, the US was physically unscathed (other than Pearl Harbor).

Now, all those other countries are up to speed and we see our industrial power diminishing because others are improving. We now have competition.

But just imagine what we could have been had we not been flooded with the teaming refuge that came after ’65.

          • JDInSanD

Some of us would be reading the internet from Mars and this site wouldn’t exist.

      • TruthBeTold

Yes and that’s difficult for people to see because the problems that came after ’65 were slow and incremental.

That’s the problem with changing policies. Right now everyone is saying ObamaCare is a success. But is it really? It’s going to take some time before problems creep up and some of them will be manageable and easily fixable.

It takes time for problems to arise and by the time they do, they can be attributed to other factors even if they aren’t true.

    • bilderbuster

      Nuclear dragons.

  • LHathaway

I remember a European, a Dutchman if I remember it right, telling me this decades ago. He said, “America has lost it’s magic”. It took another decade before I began to wonder, thinking back, if there were a racial component to his claim and if he were, perhaps, making some kind of racial statement.

When I was a kid, a decade earlier than that, I knew older people who would visit Canada and they would always come back comment about how clean it is up there. I don’t think they were racists but I do wonder if they were to visit big cities in Canada now and come back making that same claim. Maybe, maybe not.

    • david dorian

      No.

Canada is a PC diversity taxation hellhole.

      • Bossman

Too many East Asian faces now in the big cities.

    • TruthBeTold

I haven’t been to Canada in years and it was always striking how neat, tidy, and clean it was.

I understand Toronto is showing signs of third-world influences but I haven’t confirmed it myself.

  • JohnEngelman

Until recently we were a nation of genetically high quality immigrants.

  • Marc Zuckurburg

Immigration is destroying America, but it’s helping me.

And I am the most important thing. Countries come and go, but my fortune is forever.

  • dd121

The destruction of our civilization is of course, the end game for the left.

The biggest problem is that no one sees the States as a White country, i don’t know how many times i have read and heard on how Whites stole the land… this is a problem because this way people don’t recognize the effort your pioneers put in settling the land and building the society (which is not based on the culture of the “natives”), your country was 90% European in before the 60’s, you really need to point that out, the world has never seen such a fast demographic decline and ethnic replacement, it’s a tragedy.

    • JDInSanD

The other problem is that many people here and abroad think this country is 50% black based on our movies, TV shows, singers and sports figures.

    • Greg Thomas

Diversity zealots, especially the La Razas, to justify and further their invasion, use the rhetoric “Whites stole the land”. It is a defense tactic used to minimize and advance their anti-White propaganda and attempted control of this country.

    • kjh64

The same demographic decline and ethnic replacement is happening rapidly all over the Western world including Canada, Europe and Australia. The only difference, in the US it’s the Mexicans, in Europe, the Muslims. Only parts of eastern Europe have so far not allowed this but that is beginning to change.

  • Luca

The legal immigrants of yesteryear came here for opportunity, work, freedom and to become Americans

This current wave is illegal, looking for handouts and to destroy the very hand that feeds them.

    • Sick of it

A rather large number of legal immigrants seem to have come for the sole purpose of taking our country away from us, piece by piece.

  • propagandaoftruth

When a nation becomes an ideological proposition rather than a band of brethren…

Dissent is especially verboten. You have the freedom to express any opinion not in contradiction to the ideological proposition. Speech, after all, can be evidence of thoughtcrime…

  • MindHead99

The worst part is that these immigrants go right into protected group status with whites being made subservient by our own government. Whites are being ethnically cleansed by the ideology of diversity.

  • MBlanc46

We’re hardly even a geographic expression. We’re barely even a memory.

    • Alexandra1973

One thing’s for sure…I’m only 41 but I can tell you this is NOT the America I grew up in.

      • MBlanc46

I’m glad that you still have some memory of what we were so that, should the chance come, we can start re-creating it to the greatest extent possible.

  • Adolf Verloc

Of course, white settlers won the American continent by conquest, just as has happened in pretty much every land going back to prehistory. Now a new set of invaders is adopting a new set of tactics that cleverly use compassion and pity against us. As an invasion, this is a military measure and we are entitled to a military response if needed.

    • kjh64

Yes, people forget that Whites were invaded by non-Whites for centuries. The Asiatic Huns, Mongols, Muslims and others attacked, pillaged and slaughtered Europeans off and on for centuries.

  • Groovy

Our founding documents will be meaningless when nonwhites become the majority. A bunch of dead white guys composed them. Even Harry reed is complaining about white guys on the Supreme Court. The stupid will try to get rid of every thing created by whites including their own well being just like Zimbabwae. They don’t understand this but the fact is that they want everything the whites created. When they get it they will destroy it.

  • MooTieFighter

One of the elites greatest goals is destroying our constitution. With this “diversity” it will soon be possible. Mark my words, soon only “racist whites” will support the constitution. Then its all theirs.

  • Luca

Immigration is not destroying America, it is only one prominent symptom of the disease that is truly destroying America.

Call it what you will: Liberalism, socialism, communism, Neo-Marxism, The Left, etc.

It has taken over the Democratic party almost completely and has made inroads into the Republican party as well. They are at war with Whites, males, heterosexuals and Christians. Their motto is “Divide and Conquer”. They have introduced mass immigration, miscegenation, political correctness, abortion, atheism, leftist propaganda, civil rights, etc and used these as weapons. It dominates Hollywood, media, politics and academia.

They want to destroy America and Whites everywhere because we are intelligent and stand in the way of their New World Order.

    • SentryattheGate

yOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! No wonder the John Birch Society was smeared way back in the early 60’s; they were “on to” the philosophy and strategy of the Insiders to take away American sovereignty and take US down morally, economically, educationally etc. Youtube has videos of founder Robert Welch exposing this in 1974.

  • mobilebay

This is one of those phrases that the pro-illegal bunch loves to utter like every nation aren’t populated by immigrants at some time or other. Most of us are legal, law-abiding citizens, with many million illegal aliens whose first act was to break our immigration laws and do not belong here. What’s more, anyone who broke in does not deserve to become a citizen ever! I also think we need a moratorium on all immigration until we get back on track. All illegals, including the present crop need to be sent home.

  • SentryattheGate

Yes, I know he was a sponsor of the bill, along with Senator Eugene McCarthy. McCarthy later wrote a book about his regret in sponsoring it; ”
A Colony of the World: The United States Today America’s Senior Statesman Warns His Countrymen.
