Charles Murray: An Open Letter to the Students of Azusa Pacific University

Charles Murray, AEI Ideas, April 22, 2014

I was scheduled to speak to you tomorrow. I was going to talk about my new book, “The Curmudgeon’s Guide to Getting Ahead,” and was looking forward to it. But it has been “postponed.” Why? An email from your president, Jon Wallace, to my employer, the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), said “Given the lateness of the semester and the full record of Dr. Murray’s scholarship, I realized we needed more time to prepare for a visit and postponed Wednesday’s conversation.” This, about an appearance that has been planned for months. I also understand from another faculty member that he and the provost were afraid of “hurting our faculty and students of color.”

You’re at college, right? Being at college is supposed to mean thinking for yourselves, right? Okay, then do it. Don’t be satisfied with links to websites that specialize in libeling people. Lose the secondary sources. Explore for yourself the “full range” of my scholarship and find out what it is that I’ve written or said that would hurt your faculty or students of color. It’s not hard. In fact, you can do it without moving from your chair if you’re in front of your computer.

You don’t have to buy my books. Instead, go to my web page at AEI. There you will find the full texts of dozens of articles I’ve written for the last quarter-century. Browse through them. Will you find anything that is controversial? That people disagree with? Yes, because (hang on to your hats) scholarship usually means writing about things on which people disagree.

The task of the scholar is to present a case for his or her position based on evidence and logic. Another task of the scholar is to do so in a way that invites everybody into the discussion rather than demonize those who disagree. Try to find anything under my name that is not written in that spirit. Try to find even a paragraph that is written in anger, takes a cheap shot, or attacks women, African Americans, Latinos, Asians, or anyone else.

But there’s another way to decide whether you would have been safe in my hands if I had spoken at Azusa Pacific. Go to YouTube and search “Charles Murray.” You will get links to dozens of lectures, panel discussions, and television interviews. You can watch Q&A sessions in which I field questions from students like you, including extremely hostile ones. Watch even for a few minutes. Ask yourself if I insult them or lash out. If I do anything except take their questions seriously and answer them accordingly. Ask yourself if I’m anything more dangerous than an earnest and nerdy old guy.

Azusa Pacific’s administration wants to protect you from earnest and nerdy old guys who have opinions that some of your faculty do not share. Ask if this is why you’re getting a college education.

Sincerely,

Charles Murray

We are winning folks. They are deathly afraid of the weapon that we brandish, that weapon which is known as ” the Truth!”

    • Tom_in_Miami

I wish I could share your optimism about “winning.” The way I see it another scholar has been shut down by a small part of the faculty and possibly students at a university and the bulk of the students have been denied the opportunity to listen to what Dr. Murray has to say. A few months or weeks from now no one will even remember this sordid episode or have any idea who Charles Murray is, much less what he has to say. I am ashamed of and alarmed at the power these brown shirt academicians have.

      • Geo1metric

” Would a former member of The Weather Underground have been treated so shabbily?”

Absolutely not! A former member of the Weather UNderground would more likely be offered a faculty position.

    • Nathanwartooth

I guarantee that 99% of the students there will never read this and they will only think the reason he was cancelled was because he was a “racist”.

For a private Christian school, this is pathetic. Actually, this is what I have come to expect from the white religious leaders these days.

      • RisingReich

Agreed. If you don’t want to help the Church import millions of worthless round and browns to inflate the membership – you may as well BE the Devil.

      • DudeWheresMyCountry?

True, but a few smart ones will have an epiphany. Nobody thinks they want to be told what to think, and a few actually will follow through and won’t.

      • sbuffalonative

Few of them will come to learn anything. They will sit in the audience oblivious to what is being said, waiting for the Q&A so they can ask their prepared ‘Gotcha’ question.

I’ve seen it done many times. Watch the public lectures by Mr. Taylor.

They sit in the audience like closed-minded predatory animals waiting to pounce and draw blood.

    • So CAL Snowman

Truth is light and it conquers all darkness. We are currently in the age of Kali Yuga (the age of the demon). We are about to enter into the age of Satya Yuga (the age of truth).

      • sbuffalonative

I keep hoping that’s going to happen. I keep hoping that one day they’re run out of new ‘theories of oppression’ and they will be forced to deal with the truth; race is a genetic reality; true diversity means we’re different and not interchangeable, intelligence is largely an inherited trait; yes, extra help may raise someone’s IQ or SAT score a few points but you can’t make someone of average intelligence into a genius . And so on.

Unfortunately, their list of excuses (theories) is endless.

        • Geo1metric

“I keep hoping that’s going to happen. ” As do I.

But as the old General said, “son, hope is not a strategy”.

On the other hand, my hope is based on a belief in the inexorable TRUTH of Mother Nature. She cannot be fooled, and she will prevail.

On that basis, I think that the universe is still in the mode of organization as contrasted with entropy. Given that the White brain is the highest order of “organization” we know of so far, I think we will “overcome”. HOPE.

          Cosmos vs. Chaos.

          • BonV.Vant

The fact is plain, they have conceded defeat in the battle of ideas since they refuse to do battle on those fields. They are just trying to evade the truth at this point. Their vanity makes them think they can do this, but as always, they will someday run out of places to hide from as they throw their stones.

Bravo! Good letter. And Azusa Pacific has a strong Christian, theological base as a college. Where is their Christian ethic? The Cult of Liberalism trumps the religion of Christ.

    • Lewis33

Christian attitudes and altruism only work in a white society. I mean look at Africa with it’s Millions of “Christians.”

  • borogirl54

I attended Azusa Pacific in the early 70’s. Once they had a Black History program, one of the speakers invited there was a black speaker(I do not remember his name) said that Christianity has failed blacks and they should follow Islam. Now this is supposedly a Christian university and nobody did nothing to censor this person.

    • Alexandra1973

I understand that prisons are indoctrination centers for blacks…convert them to Islam. As if they need a reason to give White people a beatdown.

      • borogirl54

I think in California prisons, the races are segregated in order to avoid trouble. Each race has their own prison gang.

        • RisingReich

I’m told that’s not specific to CA.

          • IstvanIN

Actually the Supreme Court, in the majority opinion written by The Hag Bader-Ginsburg actually banned that as discrimination. Justice Thomas actually wrote in his dissent that not segregating prisoners by race subjected White inmates to rape and violence.

    • More evidence that we are sick. As if we needed more evidence… White people have got to regain their courage. We’re losing without even putting up a fight. It makes me sad.

      • borogirl54

Like I said. I was shocked at what I heard and the surprising thing that nobody did anything about it.

  • Mr. Murray’s response is a model for the way to respond to censorship on a university campus, with one exception. It demeans him to refer to himself as “nerdy” and others as “nerdy old guys.” Having intelligence and using it is NOT nerdy. It’s a trait that the white race possesses and other races do NOT possess. He just demeaned all whites with that word, “nerdy,” and pandered to the muds by using it.
I am not nerdy, I am white and smart, GD it!

    • Radicchio ad Absurdum

So you’re saying that Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Larry Elder, Shelby Steele, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Star Parker, Condi Rice, etc. do not possess intelligence?

  • Samuel_Morton

Murray is an intellectual warrior of the highest caliber.

    • benvad

      He’s a giant among dwarves.

  • I love Charles Murray. He’s got tons of guts. Alas, the modern inquisition continues…

    • dcc2379

What is scary about the whole situation is that there are fewer and fewer Charles Murrays every year. If this were a free country, those who disagree with Dr. Murray would be up in arms. As it is, the right seems to always roll over and take it. Imagine Jesse Jackson being kicked because of his views.

“The task of the scholar is to present a case for his or her position based on evidence and logic.” — Charles Murray.

Unfortunately, in today’s academic climate, that statement is no longer true. It is an example of “patriarchial, White thought” or some such nonsense. Today, academia encourages students to find their own “truth,” based on feelings, or self-esteem. Additionally, “truth” is based on who yells loud enough, or shrieks, “RACIST!!!”

As an example, I would point you to the recent winners of the collegiate Cross Examination Debate Association Championships, who won, not by debating the “evidence and logic” of the case at hand, but instead changed the entire debate to the issue of race. And, yes, of course they were black.

    • Geo1metric

A clear example of that portion of “humanity” seeking their natural place in the scheme of things…Chaos.

    • Pro_Whitey

Watch out, or you’ll run into Stomp, the new Afreakan-American debate squad. They debate with their feet. On your head. While screaming gibberish that rhymes.

  • HJ11

Post-American America has become New Africa. Whites need to start standing up in every city, town and village and start demanding White rights. I do it. Are you doing it?

  • RisingReich

The truth will be suppressed no matter the source, nor the color of the source.

    • Geo1metric

But only for a time; The truth will manifest.

  • Peter Connor

Is college about being “safe” from ideas? Western civilization, nice knowing ya.

    • Geo1metric

Even our “elite”, except for STEM, are nothing more than indoctrination centers for far left “thought”.

If your children are not STEM oriented, better that you spend your money getting them trained in a useful trade.

      • If they are STEM oriented they’ll be unemployed as our country increases it’s quotas of Indian/ Chinese/ Iranian scientists & engineers. Better get a degree in African studies or art history than engineering or the physical sciences. At least they’ll be able to get jobs.

  • Adolf Verloc

My respect for Texas gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott increased when I learned that he was getting advice from Murray. Unfortunately, Abbott turned tail once Murray became a controversial figure in the election.

  • Brian

Bravo, Charles Murray. Remaining cool, calm and collected to hostile audiences and ‘seekers’, with intellect and openness, is the way to go.

    • dcc2379

It does no good to argue with a liberal anyway, because they’re always right and offended.

  • I greatly admire Dr. Murray, but White men have got to stop constantly referring to themselves as ‘guys’ or ‘males’ instead of White men. The former contains a built-in semi-comical self-deprecatory note, while the latter could just as easily be referring to male lab rats or someone placing a personal ad. It is as if White men today are afraid to call themselves what they are for fear that they will sound triumphant or supremacist–yet another indication of how very far we have fallen.

  • libertarian1234

“His speech was “postponed” because some of his work might upset non-whites.”
Actually it just isn’t his work that upsets non-whites. Telling the truth will cause them to erupt into ballistic mode, also.
This is just one more example of thousands that clearly show that multiculturalism is an absolute failure. Anybody with any sense knows a pluralistic society can never stay intact for very long.

  • If one politician would seek to rally blue collar white Christian males under the banner of ending all racial, sex, and sexual behavior set asides, there are 40 million votes for the taking. This group seldom votes as no one represents their concerns – being sent to the back of the bus, silenced, and the last considered for employment of college admissions – they long ago replaced minorities. The Left must repudiate them and their skin color and beliefs – otherwise they may rise up and vote enmass. That would permanently alter the political landscape.

  • Steven Barr

As long as Mr Murray remains a “Libertarian” he is part of the problem.

  • Einsatzgrenadier

As a believing Christian, I refuse to attend a church with a sizable black and brown congregation.

But you would still attend a church that was minority black and brown. You would also worship alongside blacks and browns, as long as they weren’t too numerous. This, folks, is why Christianity will always remain a big part of the problem. Once you open the door to multicultural diversity, it will soon open wider, the black and brown masses will come pouring in and you’ll never be able to close that door again.

Whatever Christianity was in the past, it is now a form of white racial suicide.

    • Fr. John+

      Not my congregation!

  • dcc2379

Here is what I imagine a letter from an offended student would be:

    Dr. Murray:

You are wrong and racist. Last night, when I was watching The Butler, I noticed that every where a black man goes, especially when the person is white and a Republican, he practically faces a lynch mob at every turn. If that is not bad enough, Michigan recently decided to practically re-institute Jim Crow by making it illegal to give people with more melanin an advantage. Don’t you know that my ancestor two hundred years ago were slaves. How am I to overcome something that ended in 1865? I would go to New York City, but it is not safe for a black person there, seeing that 99.9% of all murderers are white, Christians that are sneaky, thieving, and lying. Of course, you might not know that, because I suspect you don’t watch Law and Order religiously like me.

Next I suppose you’re going to say that Obamacare didn’t save healthcare or that the hockey stick graph explaining Global Warming is false. We need fair, open, and honest debate like happens at Dr. Mike Adams’ UNCW. This certainly requires that instead of burning a book, we burn our commitment to you to present another side that, though I’ve never read or even heard of, I know is false from my schedule of Afro-American Studies 201, Queer Studies 167, History of Race, Class and Gender 101, and Film: Porn as the Model for African-American Women 199. All your mumbo jumbo doesn’t change the facts; if Eric Holder were white and hid documents like Richard Nixon, he would never be treated by the opposition like he is for being a black man.

Well, enough with you and your shady practices. The War on Women Seminar is about to begin.

    Sincerely,

    Student

  • WR_the_realist

Never has any speaker been censored by our universities for making white people uncomfortable.

    What a fantasy world

What do you call a person from Niger? Correct.
What do you call a person from Detroit. Correct

  • Geo1metric

“the Athanasian paradox that one is three, and three but one, is so incomprehensible to the human mind, that no candid man can say he has any idea of it, and how can he believe what presents no idea? He who thinks he does, only deceives himself. He proves, also, that man, once surrendering his reason, has no remaining guard against absurdities the most monstrous, and like a ship without a rudder, is the sport of every wind. With such persons, gullibility which they call faith, takes the helm from the hand of reason, and the mind becomes a wreck.” — Thomas Jefferson
