14 Caribbean Nations Sue Britain, Holland and France for Slavery Reparations

Tom Leonard and Simon Tomlinson, Daily Mail (London), October 10, 2013

Britain is being sued with France and the Netherlands by 14 Caribbean countries which are demanding what could be hundreds of billions of pounds in reparations for slavery.

Around 175 years after Britain freed its last slaves in the West Indies, an alliance of Caribbean nations is demanding to be repaid for the ‘awful’, lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade.

Caricom, a group of 12 former British colonies together with the former French colony Haiti and the Dutch-held Suriname, believes the European governments should pay–and the UK in particular.

It has hired the British law firm Leigh Day, which recently won compensation for hundreds of Kenyans tortured by the British colonial government during the Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s.

Caricom has not specified how much money they are seeking but senior officials have pointed out that Britain paid slave owners £20 million when it abolished slavery in 1834. That sum would be the equivalent of £200 billion today.

In the United States, the idea of reparations has surfaced a number of times over the years, but have never been paid out.

At the end of the Civil War, around 400,000 acres of land in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina were taken from former slave owners and earmarked for freed slaves.

But the decision was reversed by President Andrew Johnson after President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, it was noted by Al Jazeera America.

In 2008, Barack Obama said he did not support reparations to the descendants of slave, going against the views of around two dozen members of Congress who sponsored legislation to create a commission on slavery.

In the same year, the House apologised for slavery, with the Senate following suit in 2009, but neither mentioned compensation.

In its lawsuit, Caricom claims slavery condemned the region to a poverty that still afflicts it today.

And they are comparing their demand to Germany recompensing Jewish people for the Holocaust and New Zealand compensating Maoris.

‘The awful legacy of these crimes against humanity ought to be repaired for the developmental benefit of our Caribbean societies and all our peoples,’ said Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of the tiny Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

He called it a ‘historic wrong that has to be righted’.

Verene Shepherd, who is coordinating Jamaica’s demands for reparations, said their slave ancestors ‘got nothing’ when they were freed.

‘They got their freedom and they were told ‘Go develop yourselves’,’ she said.

Critics have pointed out that many of Caricom’s members are hardly poor–including millionaire havens such as the Bahamas and Barbados.

Prime minister Tony Blair expressed regret for the ‘unbearable suffering’ caused by Britain’s role in slavery in 2007 but made no mention of financial compensation.

Britain has said that paying reparations for slavery is the wrong way to address ‘an historical problem’.

Caricom insists they are hoping to reach a settlement with the European countries and will only take legal action if talks collapse.

A Caricom reparations commission has been set up to work out should be paid and how much, led by Barbados historian Sir Hilary Beckles.

Sir Hilary says they are ‘focusing’ on Britain because it was the largest slave owner in the 1830s.

‘The British made the most money out of slavery and the slave trade – they got the lion’s share. And, importantly, they knew how to convert slave profits into industrial profits,’ he said.

Some Caricom countries already get financial aid from Britain and other Commonwealth countries.

Martyn Day, the British lawyer who is advising Caricom, told the Daily Mail he doubted it would affect their membership of the Commonwealth.

‘I know they are hoping they can resolve this amicably rather than having to take matters through the courts,’ he said.

He said: ‘Our advice has been that the Caribbean states should be claiming in relation to the impact of the slave trade on the Caribbean today rather than looking for reparations related to what happened to the slaves historically.’

  • The Caribbean Indians, the few that remain, probably wish they could get the awful legacy of slavery undone.

By moving all the blacks in the Caribbean back to Africa.

    • Lagerstrom

Moving all the blacks in England back to the Caribbean would be worth paying some sort of reparations for. But do they want to move back there? No…

      • Franklin_Ryckaert

Why not directly back to Africa? That would set free those beautiful Caribbean islands for the settlement of Whites, who would use them for far better purposes than squalor and poverty.

        • Terra Magnum Imperium

It was the laziness and short sightedness of our white ancestors that created the problem in the first place, it’s a shame they do not the independent pioneer spirit of Midwestern USA whites

an alliance of Caribbean nations is demanding to be repaid for the ‘awful’, lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade.

I’d say they have a real case there and I can fully understand them.

Filling those beautiful sunny caribbean island paradises with africans is certainly something I would call an awful and lingering legacy, one that plagues them to this very day and will continue to plague them for a very long time.

Hopefully France will ‘counter-sue’ for the genocide of the French on Haiti.

“During February and March, Dessalines traveled among the cities of
Haiti to assure himself that his orders were carried out. Despite his
orders, the massacres were often not carried out until he actually
      visited the cities himself.[7]

The course of the massacre showed an almost identical pattern in
every city he visited. Before his arrival, there were only a few
killings, despite his orders.[13] When Dessalines arrived, he first spoke about the atrocities committed by former white authorities, such as Rochambeau and Leclerc,
after which he demanded that his orders about mass killings of the
areas white population should be put in effect. Reportedly, he ordered
also the unwilling to take part in the killings, especially men of mixed
race, so that the blame should not be placed solely on the black
      population.[14][15]
Mass killings then took place on the streets and on places outside the
cities. In parallel to the killings, plundering and rape also occurred.[15]

Women and children were generally killed last: Dessalines did not
specifically mention that the white women should be killed, and the
soldiers were reportedly somewhat hesitant to do so. In the end,
however, they were also put to death, though normally at a later stage
of the massacre than the adult males.[13]
The argument for killing the women was that whites would not truly be
eradicated if the white women were spared to give birth to new
      Frenchmen.[16]
Before his departure from a city, Dessalines would proclaim an amnesty
for all the whites who had survived in hiding during the massacre. When
these people left their hiding place, however, they were killed as well.[15] Many whites were, however, hidden and smuggled out by sea by foreigners.[15]”

If anything whites should be demanding compensation from blacks for all the rapes, murders, assaults, torture, cultural vandalism and general thievery that is being inflicted on us by them today.

    • Jesse James

Unfortunately is was the Revolutionary French government that spurred on and supported the genocide of the French colonist of Saint Domingue.

  • sbuffalonative

For years, western nations have acquiesced to the demands of non-whites. The precedent is there. How will western nations fight this when they have conceded every other grievance in the past?

‘They got their freedom and they were told ‘Go develop yourselves’,’ she said.

One would think that WORKING as a slave, one would learn a craft, a skill, a trade, or an occupation. I mean, if I was a slave and I was told how to plant and when to reap that I would have LEARNED how to be a productive farmer.

Did these people learn nothing working as slaves to allow them to live independently of whites?

    • Erasmus

How will western nations fight this when they have conceded every other grievance in the past?

By finally growing a pair and telling them to f**k off?…The time is coming.

The rulers of Liberia DID learn from those they formerly served. Apparently when the native Africans launched a revolution what civilization they had there collapsed.

    • Jesse James

We need to set a new precedent. Just say no. Say no to PC lies. Say no to negro shakedown scams. Say no to new taxes constantly transferred to hostile non-whites both in and outside of our nation. Say no to weepy emotive white liberals. Say no to communist anti-white revisionist history. Say not to bowing and scraping before the savage. Just say no.

  • D.B. Cooper

I say that’s a good idea. Pay up Europe! You are obviously too pansified to tell these nations to go kiss a certain lower portion of the anatomy.

  • Anglokraut

Please, they don’t want money; they want White women.

  • Tim_in_Indiana

This is only the inevitable result of white capitulation to nonwhite guilt-mongering. And it’s going to get worse. Much worse.

All that has to be done here is for the proposal to met with a resounding, ‘No f—ing way!’

  • JohnEngelman

I am confident that the average standard of living for Negroes in Caribbean countries is higher than it is in Africa. If any money should change hands, Caribbean Negroes should pay for the advantage of living in a civilization superior to any they have been able to build on their own.

Can we sue Togo and Senegal for helping to make slavery possible? It was their black ancestors who helped dump the slaves into the United States. This country has been suffering from their crime for centuries.

For whom it may concern – Learn the history of eastern Europe. Everything that ever happened to any groids looks like a joke compared to what happened in this part of the world. And yet, we’re still better than they are in every way you can imagine . It’s about race, not about anything else .

  • Lewis33

I saw a show recently (I think it was Bourdain from CNN in the Congo?) and they interviewed a taxi driver who said “If you parked a boat out there (pointing to the ocean) that had the words “Slave ship to America” written on the side, it would sink from so many people trying to get on it.”

  • bigone4u

Reparations? Just a fancy, legalistic term for “gibsmedat.”

I am sure the British have more than paid their fair share of foreign aid, not to mention support from the Commonwealth and the now dead Empire, to repay their Caribbean possessions.

No, we’ve repaid their former possessions with endless aid money…

  • So CAL Snowman

So basically these black Caribbean Islanders are admitting that they are unable to develop their own nations by themselves after 175 years and need the White man to pay for their incompetence. Same old story, different day.

  • kjh64

These nations want more “gibs me dat”. The UK, France etc. have already spent plenty of money on these nations which would be far worse off if they had never been there.

In other words: “We deserve to be free and to have you pay for it!”

They don’t understand where money or wealth come from. They think it just magically sprung up on certain countries’ lands by random chance and now they have a duty to share their good fortune with everyone else. Is it any wonder that with people like this, you can throw money at them endlessly and nothing good ever comes of it?

They only ended slavery a mere 30 years before us. THEY brought slaves here…we were stuck with them.

  • Luca

My ancestors from the Mediterranean were slaves in ancient Rome. Where do I fill out my papers for Italian reparations?

    • Ella

I don’t think Blacks realize that their ex-slaved ancestors have been dead for a while. It takes basic math to compute that the very last slave probably died in the 60’s, so they are a little late for a law-suit. Some Holocaust survivors are still alive today to continue to sue Germany. Of course, for the Gulags, forget it.

  • DonReynolds

The British, French and Dutch did not enslave anyone. They went to the markets in Afrika and bought slaves, which they resold elsewhere. If these 14 “countries” want reparations for slavery, they need to sue those (in Afrika) who enslaved them in the first place. Once they became property, no matter who bought them, the complaint is not against slaveowners but those who deprived them of their freedom. Of course, there are no people alive today who were slaves.

    • History Greek

It’s funny to me how blacks don’t realize that they would be much worse off without slavery.

  • APaige

The only negative lingering effect of slavery is the descendants of slaves. We pay everyday for slavery-crime…money…rap music…educational failure…Detroit…etc. I would be for reparations if 1. it was deserved and 2. if it would do any good. “Verene Shepherd, who is coordinating Jamaica’s demands for reparations, said their slave ancestors ‘got nothing’ when they were freed.” They got freedom-and that is the issue everywhere with blacks, give them freedom and they will fail.

  • Wouldn’t Haiti be considered “reparations” after they killed all the Whites?

It’s only a matter of time before the US gets sued—and, I’d bet that the self-loathing on the court will give blacks the ‘reparations’.

They don’t deserve a damned thing…I curse our forefathers that brought this trouble to our shores.

    • gemjunior

Wish I could double or triple my votes up sometimes, I would give yours a few extra. I curse our stupid forefathers too for the same reason but in their defense I must say they must have believed that we’d be too intelligent to take this curse of a population that is too stupid to do much for the world but just smart enough to notice that they don’t possess even a quarter of the abilities of those whites they hate so much that they violate them every chance they have. I can also say that our forefathers and the Boer trekkers for example looked at these people and knew that due to limited intellect, most could not do much more than manual labor and menial house chores. It was unforeseen that whites all over the world would be tricked into believing they were “equal”. Whites were mistakenly bamboozled, but they allowed themselves to be besotted by their own narcissistic view of themselves being so good and fair, so equitable….

  • Northern American-Nationalist

I’ll trade an “apology for slavery” for a thank you for modernity and “reparations” on human suffering over the slave trade with monetary compensation for all the convenience and comfort experienced with Western technology and other societal advancements invented and/or propagated by Europeans and their posterity.

Anyway, just give it to them. . . The “truth which may not be spoken” will arrive for more people that much sooner that way.

  • gemjunior

Seemingly GibsMeDat hasn’t been gibbin enuff. Not one average person alive in any of those countries today has benefited from slavery. If they want to go after Queen Elizabeth II or the descendants of the Marlboroughs, whatever other Dukes and Duchesses owned most of the acres in the slave countries, let them try. Better to go after some of the companies that added in slaves as part of the merchandise in their bithneth, owned by YKW or Those Who Must Not Be Named.
I want reparations from Saudi Arabia, Persia, Libya, Chad, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey and anywhere else that my people were taken as slaves. What’s that? I’m not getting a thing? Well that’s a surprise, I thought I’d get a few million dollars and sit around sucking my teeth at the world for the rest of my life.

Everything secular liberals hate about the Bible Belt and the religious right is far more true of Palestinians, but secular liberals side with the Palestinians against Israel.

    • Lagerstrom

They sure do. University students in particular. Yet they’re also mad about ‘gays’, which you think would cause some sort of a mental dilemma. I guess leftists are too busy shouting slogans at ‘fascists’ to think straight.

  • ViktorNN

If they were actually to get the 200 billion pounds, I bet in less than 10 years all the money would be squandered and gone, with most of it siphoned off into the pockets of kleptocrats.

Meanwhile, liberal white professors would hold symposiums on how evil white racist countries gave reparations all wrong and in a racist way and that it was all their fault that money went for nothing.

  • Alexandra1973

They already get reparations. In the form of government handouts.

  • Bossman

Caribbean Blacks should get real. Stop dreaming about mother Africa. Stop thinking that the UK is the “mother country.” They should try to integrate themselves into North America as much as possible because it is to that side of the world that they belong.

Here we go again! I don’t care about fricken slavery! It comes down to this: Can ANY black nation, city, or even individual, claim that he/she was made worse because of Whites? THEY CAN’T! Left to their own devices, blacks have never built a decent society; we all know that. And everywhere in the world, blacks try and move where Whites are. But we are just the awful racist people holding them down. When will this nonsense stop? We can do fine without blacks. Blacks can never survive without Whites.

  • History Greek

As a Historian, a writer and an enlightened mind, during the days of Atlantic Slave trade, slaves were considered 3/4s of a man. This simply meant that he/she was classified as a chattel slave. The term ‘chattel slavery’ may be defined as a system where slaves were bought and sold as property, they had absolutely no rights as a human being: not allowed an income, not allowed to get married, not allowed to own property, not allowed to be a witness in the court of law against an Anglo-Saxon individual and the list goes on even further.
Simultaneously, in Europe during the period of the Industrial Revolution there was a significant amount of injustices against the people of European descent like child labor in Great Britain, for example.
However, to understand the true nature as to why the 14 Caribbean/CARICOM nations are suing Great Britain, France and Holland for repatriation, one’s mind must be totally unbiased. As I mentioned earlier slaves were defined as chattel (Please check above again for definition) while on the other hand, despite the fact that there were a lot of injustices to Europeans, they all gained wages and hand rights in some form or fashion, therefore, they were considered intellectual human beings.
It is for this reason, that the 14 Caribbean/CARICOM Nations are suing for repatriation. Slaves were never considered as humans. Great Britain, Holland and France built their economies on the backs of chattel slavery. It’s time they gave something back.

    • Honk123456789

I partially agree, but many slaves were often better off than most inhabitants of Great Britain at the time as the slaves were fed sheltered and given water whereas the wages were so appalling most of the ‘working class’ were starving and diseased as they were unable to earn a decent living and were more or less treated the same as the slaves. IMO the reparations aimed at the countries is wrong as the money would be funded by those who can scarsely afford it where as it should be aimed at the ancestors of the slave owners who are mostly in a position to avoid the repairations should they be aimed at the countries as a whole.

  • History Greek

They already tried that. You should learn your history. You should research the original meaning of the country Liberia which stands for liberty and the capital is also named after an American President cause they wanted to ship all slaves back to Africa
