Black Diner Owner’s ‘I Don’t Bite’ Sign Sparks Soul-Searching About Racism in UK

Henry Austin, NBC News, July 11, 2013

A diner owner has triggered soul-searching about racism in Britain after putting up a sign informing customers she is black and doesn’t “bite.”

Martha-Renee Kolleh, 46, said she was so fed up with people walking out of her restaurant when they spotted the color of her skin that she put up the notice in the establishment’s door last week.

“I am a black woman and always will be,” it reads. “If you are allergic to black people don’t come in. But if you prefer quality wholesome meals come in. I don’t bite!”

Martha-Renee Kolleh

Martha-Renee Kolleh

The mother of three said as one family of potential patrons turned around to leave her Yeanon Café in Wakefield, Yorkshire, she heard them say: “I think we’re in the wrong place.”

“I thought I’ll just put this there and then they don’t have to look at me and go, ‘oh no, this is a black woman,’” she said. “My children and I were joking about it.”

Kolleh, who moved to Britain 11 years ago to escape the war-torn west African republic of Liberia, admitted she was trying to make a serious point about racism in the small town in northern England.

“My frustration built up over a long amount of time,” she said. “It upsets me. I don’t want to move. I just want them to accept me for who I am and give me a try. I mean if they say the food is not good enough, fair enough, but I think that a lot of the time they are leaving because of racial prejudice.”

She tested her theory by employing a white member of staff to serve customers, while she waited out of sight.

“She did really well,” Kolleh said. “One Saturday when she was serving we made almost £100 ($150), but then the next week when I was on my own I only about £20 ($30).”

{snip}

Kolleh’s sign was front-page news Thursday in the UK’s Metro newspaper’s with a headline reading “I don’t bite! Sign in a cafe that tells a sad story about racism.”

The Independent’s coverage was headlined “England 2013: Cafe owner puts up notice for customers who may not like her race” while the Daily Mail opted for “I’m black, get used to it!”

  • Once upon a time, I would not have cared, but PC is turning me off on almost anything to do with diversity. Still, it’s all about marketing. If her business is either in a minority area, or a white liberal area, I’m sure she’ll be fine.
Who knows, it might not be her, but the clientele.
I have never walked out of a business because I disliked the ethnicity of the owner.
I have, however, walked out of restaurants that were filled with high numbers of young blacks.

I have. I refuse to finance my displacement. If you don’t feed the beast, it’ll shrivel and die…..or have to go home.

Here in So Cal when there were illegals working in all the restaurants there was a rash of health problems, food poisoning and mixed up orders. Obviously a lot of Whites quit going to these restaurants and I think they got the message. One time I was served a pasta dish with what looked like ketchup on top. I complained to the waitress and she said something like “Oh, sorry, we have a language problem in the kitchen”. I told her “Well, now you’re going to have a ‘lack of business’ problem out here”.

Interesting. Here in the South used to have much better Mexican restaurants when there were less Mexicans. Seems like the small population of Mexicans represented the higher caliber of the type. Tended to blend more with local population better.

But with rising numbers I’m finding it harder to get good Mexican food. A place just around the corner once was superb, serving many less Americanized dishes like Mole and various pork dishes. Good food, good presentation, good service.

But seems the quality of the place has eroded as the numbers of Mexicans have increased. Truly they flee their homeland because there is there and here is here, and just as truly they are turning here into there.

After my once favorite Mexican restaurant screwed up my order five times in a row (once the corpulent, vacuous, senorita couldn’t figger out change for a 20 on a $13.49 order, multiple instances of no condiments and just plain slapped together substandard food quality) I have decided to try to patronize my own people’s business and live without Mexican food.

Culinary diversity (the only good thing about diversity) is simply not worth the frustration or risk. Ironic too how the quality of diversity seems to be in obverse relationship to the numbers of the diverse peoples one wakes up in shock one fine day to find in one’s former home.

          • Get yourself a Mexican cookbook or check out a few from your local library. I make lots of very good Mexican food at home.

    • me

Well, DB, enjoy your Bantu spit….it’s a ‘special’ ethnic seasoning that they use to enhance Whitey’s food.

    • John Smith

Exactly. It’s not about the owner’s ethnicity. It’s about not wanting to be victimized. If I leave a restaurant serving decent food at decent prices it’s because I’ve seen a red flag(s) that made me question my personal safety there.

“I’m black, get used to it!”

    ———————————————————————————————————————

I’m not gonna eat at your restaurant, get used to it !

    • IstvanIN

Driving home last night I was tired and didn’t want to make dinner. I thought about picking up some KFC, I love their extra-crispy chicken. Then I thought about all the blacks and mexicans and who knows whats that work there. I called my local white family owned pizzeria and ordered from them.

      • Spartacus

Good for you ! We should boycott any business that hires non-whites, and patronize white family-owned businesses .

    • NeanderthalDNA

Hey…I’m White and I’m under no obligation to subject myself to your food or your person.

Sick of tolerating mediocrity because it comes in Bantu skin tones. Smile and chew and tell the Bantu how yummy it is. It is our white duty to support this Bantu’s business because we are white and evil? Or if it fails…we pay her anyway? So eating west African crap cuisine is the reparations we must politely pay in order to not pay those reparations to the gubbamint to be doled out in the form of a dole?

From the time delineated thumbs down it looks like we must have an anti-racist lurking from time to time here, lol…

  • Creepy as a cracker!

I would not patronize her business either. In fact I was out of town today on business and I walked into an Arby’s for lunch. It was staffed by all blacks. I turned around and walked out. I want nothing to do with any blacks if I can help it.

    • dd121

I will avoid restaurants that have predominantly black staffs. At McDonalds they will definitely get your order wrong. What they do to the food I’ll leave to the imagination.

      • gemjunior

        Absolutely will not touch it.

        • Creepy as a cracker!

Yes might I add that I do not want any blacks handling and doing who knows what to my food.

      • saxonsun

There’s a famous soul food restaurant in Harlem that features food that isn’t all that good. The crazy whites go there en masse to sample the chow. Sometimes I truly despair of/for my people.

    • CaptainCroMag

There are two main things that I expect when I go out to eat: better food than I could make at home and to have a pleasant experience. If the place is staffed mainly by Blacks, the chances are high that I won’t find either.

      • OlderWoman

Chances are they would spit in your food like Jesse Jackson did.

        • bigone4u

Local Mexicans spit in the food of blacks since the waitresses get stiffed on tips by blacks. Payback.

A friend once asked for a lemon juice packet for his tea at an all black Burger King. After he squirted the mustard from the yellow packet into his tea …
If the employees can’t read, they can’t follow directions to prepare and store food properly. You may have saved yourself food poisoning.

      • Creepy as a cracker!

They are not the cleanest people. I am sure they are not storing, preparing and handling food consistent with industry standards. Best to avoid them all together.

    • Been there, Done that. I walked into an Arby’s in Louiville, KY, back in 1998, and made a U-turn so fast my shoes left rubber on the tile floor.

My wife and I go out to eat only three times per year: on our anniversary and our birthdays. It’s always the same place.

  • IstvanIN

Whites should boycott all black businesses in the UK. Her restaurant should be in Nairobi.

    • me

Of course it would never occur to the ‘lady’ that it could be that her food sucks, or she has a filthy restaurant, or that her ‘exotic’ cuisine doesn’t appeal to the native Brits….it has to be RACISM. God, these people are pathetic!

      • gemjunior

She’s probably making yams, plantains, palm oil stew, and serving it on a banana leaf. Or some version of that… why should the old school English eat that? The old people have already seen the world turned on it’s head so I’m sure they don’t want to eat whatever she’s serving up. I bet it’s not steak & kidney pie or Yorkshire pudding, that’s for sure. Or, dat’s fo’ sho’. And everyone knows nigs spit in whitey’s food. Even old Brits. So no thank you, and go back to Liberia.

        • [Guest]

Among the great benefits of diversity has been the illegal importation of “bush meat” into civilized nations from the dark continent.

Perhaps this Liberian restauranteur’s blue-plate special features a monkey head with bananas on the side.

In addition to being tasty, bush meat is used for “traditional” (i.e., fake) medicine, and also is a good source of various diseases.

From an article about Africans spreading diversity in Paris: “…Bushmeat had a higher risk of normal bacteria such as salmonella but that it might also be carrying new diseases. AIDS originated in monkeys, and the global 2003 SARS outbreak was traced to a virus in bats and civets, arboreal mammals native to the tropics of Africa and Asia.”

          • gemjunior

Lawdy lawd dat monkey haid sho’ be lookin good. Save me a piece o’ dat haid. I be so greatful.

          • TheAntidote

LOL. There was a case not too long ago of an African student living in Britain trying to bring two suitcases full of dried caterpillars through Heathrow. They confiscated the yum yums but only because they hadn’t been canned! Apparently the worms are available in British shops packed in brine.
We’ve all poked fun at English food (bubble and squeak, toad in the hole) but I believe in my heart the British would walk out of any establishment with caterpillars on the menu.

          • [Guest]

I’ve read some of those stories as well. At least dried caterpillars, unlike monkey heads, are not disease-spreading (as far as I know).

From the “Washington Post”: Bloody, raw, smoked or dried, untold thousands of pounds monkey parts, giant African cane rats and other illegal “bush meat” slips into the United States each year.

For some of the Washington area’s African residents, the meat is a taste of home, a treat for the holidays and reunions.

“It’s a delicacy, for special occasions,” said Sambourou Diop, a Gabonese national…

        • Pelagian

Ever go to an international festival in your city? The Greek Gyros, the Spanish Paella, the Italian toasted ravioli stands have lines a mile long. The obligatory sub-Saharan food stand is “no waiting”. I guess that’s racist discrimination too, huh?

        • saxonsun

My sister’s term for black infants is “niglets.”

  • What happens if white Yorkshire folk don’t want something a groid cooked? I wouldn’t go there either.

Like a missionary or bush meat?

    • David Ashton

These particular “English” are not so loathsome, then?

      • They have the right to their own country, same as Irish.

        • David Ashton

We agree on that at any rate. I won’t now need a tin hat and a bullet proof vest if you ever visit our island set in the silver sea.

  • Pelagian

You only have the race hustlers to blame, ma’m. The race hustlers have turned up the rhetoric against whites so high – and have gotten away with it thanks in large part to the media, … that you could probably be spitting in our food and it would be justified by someone somewhere as part of the “payback for the legacy of slavery”.

So we whites, hemmed in at our jobs and in the public square by diversity requirements, are going to damn well vote with our feet on what few areas of discretion we have left. Until you and your minions pass laws saying we have to eat in so many black restaurants per month or face jail.

  • Tom_in_Miami

“Until you and your minions pass laws saying we have to eat in so many black restaurants per month or face jail.”

That may be coming next. I’ve worried about blacks spitting into my food ever since I read about Jesse Jackson bragging about doing that very thing.

    • I have refused to eat in any restaurant where I see any blacks working for the very same reason. I’ll bet Je$$e thought the remark was funny, but it has probably cost black cooks and wait staff quite a lot of missed income.

  • Translation: Her business failed, either because of her bad planning and execution, or because of fate and circumstances.

I’m guessing she would be a lot more successful in Monrovia’s culinary scene.

    • IstvanIN

Or because she spits in British people’s food.

    • gemjunior

“Translation: Her business failed, either because of her bad planning and execution, or because of fate and circumstances.”
Blame whitey who is always plotting against poor innocent blacks. How can they ever succeed when whites keep putting obstacles in their way and ruining their businesses by not patronizing them enough.
      Ugh. Whitey is soooo bad.

      • The only way for her to not be exposed to whitey’s awful nature is to avoid white countries. She should try Saudi Arabia; I hear Saudis think blacks are just great (as slaves). Perhaps Russia would work for her; the skinheads there would make her feel right at home.

  • So CAL Snowman

This is NOTHING but a PR stunt by this woman. She was hoping the local papers would pick it up and they did.

“Kolleh’s member of parliament said she was “shocked and dismayed” to hear of her experiences.

“There is absolutely no place for any form of racism in Wakefield,” lawmaker
Mary Creagh said. “I am sure the local community will rally round to
    support her and her business.”

Everywhere they go the africans are exactly the same, shaking down the local people by crying racism and pretending to be an aggrieved victim. She is probably giggling over all of the free press and White guilt.

“In the wake of the response, Kolleh said Thursday that she plans to
take down the sign from the door and store it inside her diner, which
    serves English and Afro-Caribbean food.

“I think I’ve made my point,” she said. “I don’t want it taken out of context, but I hope people get the message.”

As a great shrubbery once said : Mission Accomplsihed

    • Sick of it

Interesting that they would refer to it as racism. If anyone knew she was from Liberia, where they are literally chopping off people’s limbs on a regular basis, they would only naturally be wary of her establishment.

I avoid Black owned businesses precisely because they are Black owned.

I prefer to help my own kind by patonizing White owned businesses. That’s my choice and I have no apologies to anyone about it.

Maybe we should bring those back, actually.

  • bigone4u

I read the whole story last week. When you go in, you see that the menu is Jamican food. “We’re in the wrong place,” is not necessarily racist, but simply a rejection of the menu and/or the prices. The MSM is cooking up (yes, that’s a pun!) a racist plot when there is none.

In an effort to force the peace. Western global disarmament will preclude a one world govt to keep stability. Coming soon to America. You can’t say everyone is equal and should enjoy western democracy and then not give them an opportunity. You can’t allow feminization, emasculation, homosexualization, non stop partying, destruction of a unifying belief system, materialism, sexualization, abortion, and a permissible drug culture and then wonder what happened. Albeit many of the above mentioned list was foisted upon the West by the deceivers. There is a concept in psychology called “attribution theory”, and it posits how people attach blame to what they think is the true source of their problem or problems. Those who reject personal responsibility for their actions never look at themselves as the reason they sometimes fail. Most blacks are notorious for this. The woman should look in a mirror and ask herself why white people don’t want to patronize her establishment. Crying “racism” just validates why you are being avoided, and how you are the problem.

If her thought processes are mature and honest, she’ll understand that blacks target whites for everything to include not enough government handouts or privileges, black crime, and chronic black failure at the expense of taxpayers,

Then there is the history of black restaurant employees spitting in restaurant food prior to serving it to whites. This was a practice of Jesse Jackson against white patrons when he said he was young and working as a waiter in a restaurant. He wrote this in one of his early books – about himself.

No, lady. It’s not that people don’t like you because you are black. It’s because of the daily insults you and your people put whites and Asians through on a daily basis as you seethe contempt for them in your churches, in public, and while at black political gatherings.

This letter was published in today’s (July 16th) Daily Mail:

“If Martha-Renee Kolleh believes the reason why customers walk out of her café is because she’s black (Mail), she’s mistaken.

“My wife and I visited the café earlier this year and had to wait more than half an hour to be served with tea and toasted teacakes.
