Sri Lanka Crowd Attacks Muslim Warehouse in Colombo

BBC News, March 29, 2013

Several people have been injured in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, when Buddhist monks led hundreds in an assault on a Muslim-owned clothing warehouse.

Buddhist monks were filmed throwing stones at the storage centre of popular garment chain Fashion Bug in a suburb of the capital on Thursday night.

Police told AFP news agency that forces had been deployed to guard the area.

The attack comes as hard-line Buddhist groups step up a campaign against the lifestyles of Muslims.

The government’s Minister for Justice Rauff Hakeem, himself a Muslim, urged the prime minister to call an urgent cabinet meeting to discuss the security of Muslims following these attacks.

These developments come four years after the army in the mainly Sinhalese Buddhist country defeated Tamil separatists.

During Sri Lanka’s bitter civil war the Muslims – a small Tamil-speaking minority, about 9% of the population – kept a low profile, but many now fear that ethnic majority hard-liners are trying to target them.

The BBC’s Charles Haviland in Colombo said the monks led a crowd which quickly swelled to about 500, yelling insults against the shop’s Muslim owners and rounding on journalists seeking to cover the events.

Five or six were injured, including a cameraman who needed stitches.

Eyewitnesses said the police stood and watched although after the trouble spread they brought it under control.

“We have deployed extra units of STR (Special Task Force commandos) and police to guard the area,” police spokesman Buddhika Siriwardena told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

“The situation was brought under control within a few hours,” he said, adding that no arrests had been made.

Television footage showed broken glass and clothing from the warehouse strewn in the street.

Hard-line Buddhist groups led by monks also sent around a text this week urging people to boycott Muslim shops when stocking up for the forthcoming Sri Lankan New Year festival.

After some Muslim groups called a strike in protest against a growing Buddhist campaign against their lifestyle, including halal food classification, a hard-line Buddhist party in the governing coalition issued a statement saying: “Sinhalese Buddhists should be determined to teach such Muslim extremists a lesson that they will never forget”.

The assault comes a day after police set up a hot-line to tackle complaints about anyone “inciting religious or racial hatred hatred”.

    How wretched are Muslims?

As for the minarets, the music that they constantly play says nothing to me about my life.

A ‘Smiths’ quote on Amren? I’ll be.

Smiths/Morrissey have been subject of discussion here a few times over the years. Usually whenever Morrissey gets himself into hot water with the British media for making horrible, bigoted, unforgivable statements such as he actually likes being English, doesn’t appreciate the Third World takeover of London, doesn’t enjoy reggae, thinks Bengalis in platforms look funny, etc.

Muslim fashion? The men wear dirty rags and the women are covered head to toe in garbage bags. How can there be Muslim fashion?????

before you get high and mighty, these are likely garments headed for western consumers. Like yourself

I’m not Buddhist but I think I might have joined that riot. Then again, if there were journalists there the face of some 6’2 white dude would probably be plastered all over the media, and they’d eventually find out who I am.

To my Buddhist friends, I say get rid of the muzzies now, or in a generation you’ll be facing the same problems that white Americans face with Hispanics and blacks. To my representatives in Congress, I say get rid of the muzzies now, or in a generation ALL Americans will be facing the problems that muzzies create.

  • Lygeia

Buddhists are very nice. But when they have had enough they let you know.

    • Michael_C_Scott

And when they’ve had enough, they’re remarkably nasty. The Tamil insurgency there was put down with vicious thoroughness by Sri Lanka’s Buddhist dominated government. The Japanese Imperial Army soldiers who killed 300,000 Chinese civilians in Nanking – frequently by beheading – were also Buddhists. In fact in medieval Japan, militant Buddhist sects fought each other and local feudal lords nearly constantly and with little provocation.

As for the Muzzies, well it seems everyone in the world understands them.

      • Hindus in India are also the same way, paisan. If a Muslim kills a Hindu in India, Hindus will retaliate swiftly, killing several Muslims in reprisal.

For a long time, Nathuram Godse – the man who assasinated Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948 at Birla House, in New Delhi- has been unwaveringly described as a “Hindu fanatic.” WRONG! He was no fanatic, but was driven by a love for India, and a hatred for Gandhi; for tolerating Muslim crimes against Hindus, and also blamed him for the partition of India and Pakistan. He accused Gandhi of silence against Mohammed Ali Jinnah’s slaughter of Hindus in Pakistan, while berating Indians of “not getting along” with Muslims in India.

I have read Godse’s 92-page deposition, the one he presented at his trial for Gandhi’s assaination, and came away with the feeling that this man was certainly no fanatic. American, and other Western politicians are doing the same things Gandhi did, over 60 years earlier – namely, punishing their own non-Muslim constituents for what they perceive as “intolerance”, while staying silent about Muslim crimes. Just like Obama telling us not to “rush to judgment”, after that Fort Hood, TX shooting.

In some matters, the more things change, the more they do remain the same.

    • WIRBIW

Much like whites. We are nice, but it takes us a long LONG time before we fight back. When we do? All bets are off. Don’t eff’ with whites. History has shown in the end we usually destroy our enemies at some point.

  • The__Bobster

UK, take note. This is how you run them out.

    • Brian

During the last UK Race riots, the Sikhs and others did themselves proud by standing firm and driving off entire mobs of Black terrorists. They also did themselves proud by besieging a Police station where Muslim rapists who’d attacked a Sikh girl were being held.

Even the buddhists know that muslims make trouble everywhere they go. If only westernized countries could follow the example of these buddhists. But instead, if we were to fight them off when they try to harm us, our corrupt MSM would be on it for weeks, talking more of their usual nonsense about how hate and prejudice against muslims still exist and how we need to be more understanding and accepting of them.

    • Cape to Cairo

The Buddhists understand the Muslims quite well because they don’t have the luxury of “Buddhists Flight.” If they did, there would be a Buddhist elite doting all over the Muslims while subjecting their Buddhist underclass brethren to the wonders of “SubContinental Asian Diversity.”

  • John R

Buddihsm is normally a very peaceful, passive, religion. As Jay Leno once quipped in one of his monologues: “A Buddhist terrorist is a little like an Amish computer hacker.”

But, people have limits. Why did the peaceful Buddhists get violent? Because I am sure-given Muslim behavior around the world-they were provoked. And, once more, and this is my main point: The Buddhists are not a Western people. They have not been infected with that self hating guilt ridden Philosophy of LIBERALISM.
Maybe we could indeed learn much from a study of Eastern culture. After all, isn’t that what the liberal multi-culturalists have been saying all along? The irony.

    • Paleoconn

Only Western society is suicidal. But the infection originates from an outside influence that permeated otherwise healthy, traditional and self-preserving Christian society.

      • White Mom in WDC

Our society was fine until some stupid liberal white people got infected with Jewish guilt. That culture is laden with guilt and psychosexual issues.

      • LIMD

White people in the past used to believe in Christianity and their nations. They no longer believe in anything except instant gratification and materialism. We are destroying ourselves because of that.

        • Paleoconn

Spot on. Faith, nation, heck even family means nothing to the mass man anymore. Only material goods. Made in China.

        • Michael_C_Scott

I’m not a Christian, and was never baptised. I’m not materialistic; when I need something, I go downstairs to the basement and make one. I needed more tool boxes, and what I had was empty ammo crates, so I am refinishing, rebuilding and sub-compartmenting them as specialized tool boxes: one for the tools and accessories that go with my air compressor, and the other ditto for my oscillating multifunction carving/sawing/sanding/scraping tool and the blades for it. I like to listen to music by Blackmoor’s Night while I work, especially “Ghost of a Rose”, and my daughter likes to watch me work, so I tell her what I am doing and why.

All this work causes the rows of callouses on my hands to grow together, so a few times each year, I shave them with a hobby knife and then cut the remaining knobs below each knuckle off with clippers, because otherwise even my own mother says they look like “serial killer’s hands”.

I used to believe in my nation. When I can have my gun rights back, I will again, though I will never trust it. In the meantime, my family and friends are my nation.

To be certain, lots of people live for the next box of garbage made in China, but I attribute this more to laziness than their lack of religion. Why make something beautiful and of lasting value out of wood, brass and steel when you can have some Chinese make one for you out of plastic and aluminum while you busy yourself watching Africans throw a ball around on TV? It’s a shortcut for them.

Did you know the United States spent more man-hours watching the O.J. Simpson white Bronco “chase” on TV than we did building the Panama Canal?

The stuff people in my neighborhood throw away would make you cry. They’re soulless consumers. I scrounge lots of good wood for some of my projects late Thursday nights, though too much “wood” trash is particle board anymore, and I’ll have nothing to do with that stuff. One of my neighbors just dropped eight grand on a car he doesn’t need, but won’t pay for braces to get his son’s horribly crooked teeth fixed. He’s black, and nice enough for one of them, but he just doesn’t “get it”. They don’t recycle – we have free curbside recycling – and the three of them produce a greater volume of trash than the other 15 people on the block combined, always bagged in bought-for-the-purpose trash bags. They go to church on Sundays.

Confusing crass consumerist materialism with a lack of religion is an over-simplification – a cheat. My wife, daughter and I are heathens, but we spent yesterday afternoon digging up our vegetable planter barrels all the way down until we hit the clam shells at the bottoms, and then buried six months’ worth of fruit and vegetable peels, pistachio shells, hibachi ash, boiled soup bones, old coffee ground and tee lees and the leaves I swept out of the alley last autumn. The natural soil on much of Colorado’s front range is worthless bentonite volcanic clay and sugar sand, but it produces quite nicely when one is willing to work instead of watching idiotball on idiotvision. We’ll have a good crop of tomatoes, peppers and such this summer.

Before Christianity, white people produced Celtic metalworking, Greek philosophy and the Roman empire. We were doing quite alright.

          • Pat

Occasionally my husband goes to the local Council re-cycling site to get rid of bulky items. He always comes back with horror stories of people who have thrown away oak/ mahogany /walnut, furniture, etc. I hear about it for days. He has his air compressor in the garage, pretty certain we are short on ‘ammo crates’ (strictly not allowed here) but could raise you a small lathe. How are you on the fact that modern appliances can no longer be repaired? …. You and he would get on like a house on fire. Regards Pat

Even peace-loving Buddhists have their limits. Buddhists-Muzzies, go Buddhists. Israelis-Muzzies (no dog in that fight as far as I’m concerned)

“Several people have been injured in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, when Buddhist monks led hundreds in an assault on a Muslim-owned clothing warehouse.”

Several people were injured, but none died. That’s much more than can be said for any assault committed by a large group of Muslims. The Buddhists are obviously the more civilized group here. They should expel the Muslims while they still can. Crime would probably plummet in Sri Lanka.

  • Cato

The comments here prove once again that Americans don’t understand the world around them. The Buddhist Singhalese fought an extremely unscrupulous war against the Hindu Tamil–are we trying to elevate these people as morally superior? They are primed to hate anyone different from themselves. I wouldn’t want to live as their neighbours, and if you are wise, neither would you.

    • The army of any nation is charged with protecting its population against enemies, both foreign and domestic. It’s the luck of the draw that the Sri Lankan army is made up of mostly Sinhalese.

Similar to Rwanda and Burundi – although the Hutu tribes outnumber the Tutsi tribe by some 85-14%, the majority of the army in those countries is comprised of Tutsis, and the army controls Rwanda and Burundi.

      • Michael_C_Scott

The Sinhalese are the majority in Ceylon. The Tamils are always free to leave for southern India, where they are the majority.

  • brengunn

“Sinhalese Buddhists should be determined to teach such Muslim extremists a lesson that they will never forget”.

Oh, the irony of that statement.

As for all the comments about peace loving Buddhists: They’re no more peace loving than any other people, which is to say, they’re violent and clannish and just as likely to hate their neighbours. I can’t see why everyone is extolling their virtues, when they are clearly the aggressors.

Just because some Muslims hate the West doesn’t mean all Muslims worldwide are terrorists. These people are likely the same ethnic group as the Buddhists but just separated by a choice their ancestors made to convert to Islam.

    • You forget that while not all Muslims are terrorsts, they will support those that are terrorists. By their silence, they acquiesce. That’s why I have NO SYMPATHY WHATSOEVER, for what is going on in Syria, for example. I’ll make book that the same people who are now being shot down by Bashir Assad’s regime, danced and keened in the streets of Damascus, Aleppo, Deraa and elsewhere; after what happened to us, on 9-11-2001. They are now getting their just desserts, as far as I’m concerned.

I’ll say to you, as I have posted elsewhere on the Internet re the Syrian skirmishes (I do not regard it as a civil war):

“Let a hundred flowers bloom on Syria’s grave. Let a hundred jackals contest over her remains”.

      • Liberalsuck

Much like blacks. Not all blacks are gangbangers or commit violence against whites, but there are many who will side with them.

      • JohnEngelman

It is in America’s interest to encourage Moslems to fight each other.

        • PesachPatriot

It doesn’t take much encouragement on america’s part….if a shia country like iran looks crossways at a sunni country like iraq they will fight each other tooth and nail for 8 years and use chemical weapons for the first time since WWI and the battle of ypres…muslim vs. muslim violence in the near east since 1948 has probably killed five times as many people as all the muslim vs. israel conflicts combined….Syria’s recent exercise in polite civilized democratic debate has killed more syrians than the 1948, 1967 and 1973 wars against israel put together.

          • JohnEngelman

During the war between Iran and Iraq the United States gave assistance to the side that was losing. If that side started to win U.S. support shifted to the other side. This policy cause the war to last for eight years, and to kill over a million people on both sides.

The policy and the war would have continued longer, but when weapon shipments to Iran were revealed the Reagan administration was afraid that Iran would win and that it would be blamed. Ronald Reagan and his handlers knew that many Reagan supporters hated Iran more than the Soviet Union.

Therefore enough support was shifted to Iraq to enable that country to win a Pyrrhic victory.

        • Michael_C_Scott

I think that view is worse than awful; it is criminally insane. I’ve said some rather unpleasant things here, but what you wrote is disgusting. Why not have the Germans and Russians fight some more? You won’t be involved, so what do you care?

The business of the United States once was business.

It is in nobody’s interest that anyone fight each other. It is expensive and miserable and something we will always have with us as hominids, but it ought to be minimized.

Do you know the 1941-45 Pacific War was fought by mistake? The US imposed an oil and scrap metal embargo on Japan because of their behavior in China. Since Japan’s fleet was their only claim to Great Power status, they regarded our refusal to supply them fuel oil as a military threat. Herein lays the rub: we wanted them to withdraw from China proper and not Manchuria, a bandit-infested wasteland at the time the US government cared nothing about. They thought it included Manchuria.

The diplomats never made this clear to each other. This gross incompetence and probable drunken negligence on the part of well-paid officials got over 3 million people killed in the most miserable of conditions in the Pacific War, leaving the China-Burma-India theater completely out of the reckoning.

          • IstvanIN

That is truly sad if, as you say, the Japanese could have kept Manchuria as a puppet state, we could have avoided WW2, and the incredible loss of life and post-war freedom that resulted. But remember, Roosevelt and Morgenthau wanted war, so it may not have been a mistake.

      • Morris LeChat

yes, the muslim community provides the ground on which muslim terrorists are grown. To eradicate muslim terrorists, you need to eliminate that ground.

  • Wherever you get Islam, you get trouble.

That’s a universal rule, across the entire world and over all of history. These Buddhists are smart enough to act on that information.

  • DW

The strange irony here is that Sinhalese Buddhists, Tamil non-Muslims & Tamil Muslims in Sri Lanka belong to the same ethnicity and race, for most part. How much difference culture can make between blood brothers !

  • Greg Thomas

Damn…you must be really wicked to drive a Buddhist monk to violence.

  • Bantu_Education

I think its worth mentioning that the Muslims of Sri Lanka are called “Moors” – they are very prominent in Colombo business life, you could call them the Jews of Sri Lanka.

  • Lt. Columbo

Make all the rude comments that you want to make but never forget COLUMBO was always the guy who got his man (or woman)
