Tenn. Senator Wants to End Diversity Programs on College Campuses

WBIR, January 24, 2013

A Tennessee state lawmaker believes it’s time to end diversity programs and preference for minorities on college campuses and in other areas.

Senator Jim Summerville (R- Dickson) has introduced a series of bills he calls the “Civil Rights Initiative of 2013.” It would ban diversity officers on campus, abolish any preference given by universities to those of different races and ethnicities, and prohibit the state from keeping any statistics based on race, gender or ethnicity.

“It’s a little demeaning I think to classify people in those categories. They might wonder ‘Am I here because I’m any good or am I here to fill a quota?’ So I think it’s time to let this go,” said Summerville.

{snip}

Right now, the bill has no House sponsor, but Summerville says he’s confident he’ll find someone to carry it there.

[Editor’s Note: Sen. Summerville is no stranger to racial controversy. See here for “offensive remarks” he said in August 2012.]

  • I agree with Summerville, university admission should be given to the best qualified applicants, regardless of race or any other factor. So what if the bulk of the students in these universities are predominately white or Asian. These were the best qualified applicants.

    • Tom_in_Miami

The battle is lost when we have to say, generally under our breath, that “university admission should be given to the best qualified applicants.” That we have to argue the obvious is a bad sign.

  • I wonder how much attention this will get in the media, no doubt it will be kept all out of view and quiet, but good for him for raising the issue. Keeping it a live issue, keeping it in the public eye. This is a fine proposal and the very act of opposing it will lose the leftists some support.

    • liberalsuck

The liberals and blacks and latinos will call him a racist for not supporting racially-based initiatives. Go figure.

  • The__Bobster

What a great issue. Yet Romney refused to even touch it.

    • Jefferson

The vast majority of politicians in Washington refuse to take an anti-affirmative action stance, even though most politicians in Washington are White men. That is the irony of it.

    • Katherine McChesney

Romney refused to touch a lot of things.

  • MekongDelta69

At least there’s ONE sane politician in the U.S.

  • Ed_NY

I wish Mr. Summerville the best and I hope he can get his legislation passed.. We need more like him.

    • Garrett Brown

      Hear hear!

      • The Verdict of History

Finally, a REAL civil rights initiative.

  • Jefferson

If affirmative action was struck down as unconstitutional, the racial demographics of all the universities in the U.S would all either resemble Sweden or South Korea.

I say South Korea because most universities on the West Coast would end up being heavily Asian, but in the rest of the U.S the universities would be a Whitopia.

    • ed91

Korean love them some university learning, right engledork?

    • Extropico

Were Asians of actual superior intellect, wouldn’t ya think 99% of them wouldn’t have lived in abject poverty until the White man gave them racial set aside trade benefits and artificially supported their economy by paying for their national defense? That is just inane trolling and agitating. Du Teufelmann.

      • Jefferson

If Asian Americans are such such a low I.Q group, why is there is not a over representation of Asian Americans in our country’s prison population ?

After all, racial groups with an extremely low I.Q all commit a very high number of crimes.

        • IstvanIN

Give them time, we haven’t got enough of them just yet. Look at this civilized oriental behavior: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWVOnNx9ZXU

          • Jefferson

Asians make up the largest Nonwhite group in cities like Honolulu, San Jose, and San Francisco.

Yet these cities never make the list of most dangerous violent places in America to live in. How do you explain that ?

If Asian Americans are such a low I.Q group, the crime and murder rate in Honolulu for example should be similar to that of New Orleans and Detroit. But they are not even close.

          • IstvanIN

Whites are very discriminated against and harassed by orientals in Hawaii.

          • Brady

True, but discriminated against and harassed is not the same as robbed, raped and murdered.

          • Garrett Brown

This. I would much rather my neighbors be Asian than black or Hispanic.

          • Jefferson

The predominantly Asian Hawaii has a lower per capita murder rate than the national average.
            http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/murder-rates-nationally-and-state
How do you explain that ?

          • whites control hawaii, idiot.

          • potato78

99% of orientals would not harass the pure whites!

But a lot of dusky whites did harassment to Orientals either verbally or physically. They are trying to show they are the more “white” than pure whites.

            Nobody is perfect.
            No racism exist in Asia.

some of the things are depended on how you look at.

          • Garrett Brown

He’s just plainly incorrect. Even Jared Taylor said if there was any other race whites could be homogenous with it would be Asians. They are for the most part very peaceful.

          • wander out onto a beach, while white, in honolulu after dark. you will be in the equivalent of detroit.

          • Jefferson

Do you have any statistics to back up your claim that Honolulu is just as dangerous as Detroit ? If not, than you are just talking out of your behind.

          • Garrett Brown

            According to what?

          • Garrett Brown

They most probably attacked those white kids because they wrongly insulted them for no reason. A gang beat down? Not justified. Defending yourself from ignorant people when you want to be left alone? COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED.

          • Kblankenship7

Does anyone know the story behind this incident? Where it happened? Cause? I started to watch it, but it seemed to be another case of multiple people attacking two or three others. The youtube comments were full of profanity/obscenity so I did not want to wade through them.

        • Simple, Asian American cultures have a strong sense of shame. This worst thing a person can do is to shame their family by doing wrong. This is why Asian countries have a high suicide rate.

          • Garrett Brown

That shame is brought out upon the goal of excellence in everything they do. Which is one of the developments of their high intellect. Children mastering instruments/ a martial arts before the age of ten, etc. Whites do this as well but not to the extent of a Japan or South Korea and yet we still, in my opinion, developed much faster in agriculture, architecture, technology etc.

          • your examples are not a sign of intellect, but a sign of discipline. a subtle difference.

          • Garrett Brown

I know, but intellect thrives on discipline.

    • A Multiracial Individual

Ending affirmative action in this country (restoring academic merit to university admission) would benefit Whites no doubt. It would likely benefit Asians even more. Gentlemen like yourself, and John Engleman, receive unsportsmanlike thrashing when they point out uncomfortable trends in racial differences. I thought the ad hominem was something mostly liberals reach for when they hear racial data they disagree with. Apparently not.

      • Extropico

Utter racial rubbish. When you Asians give us favorable trade preferences and pay for our national defense and educate our poor in your nations at your taxpayer expense, then you will see a more correlative dimension.

  • bigone4u

Watch for the liberal media to demonize this man as a racist. As for the students, I expect many of them will be out demonstrating in favor of “diversity” (I hate that word). The students have been brainwashed into believing that their lives are not complete unless they have black, Hispanic, and Asian friends. When you encounter one, ask them how diversity benefits them personally. Betcha you won’t get a rational answer.

    • Ed_NY

Those were exactly my thoughts as soon as I read this article.

    • liberalsuck

Ask them why if they like blacks, browns and Asians and Muslims so much that they don’t already move to countries where these people are already a majority. Ask them why they don’t just give their job, money, house, car and other valuables to nonwhites if they like them so much?

  • There might be room in a future racialist nation for politicians with this kind integrity.

  • Lewis33

Keep up the good work Mr. Summerville! Whatever you do don’t apologize to the goons that are surely on their way.

    • Liberalsuck

I wish more Republicans were like this man! To my ‘neocon’ friends and GOP establishment reading this-this is what a real conservative white man is

  • Sam

Is this just a hopeless boast, or a viable proposal? I hope it’s a viable proposal but I doubt it. Diversity is America’s fundamental religion.

Any university in the US that is purely merit-based is going to be a success. Take a look at at MIT and Caltech, and compare them with the nonsense coming out of the Ivy League these days. When I hear someone has a degree from Harvard, I now need to know what subject it’s in. STEM? Cool, that person is smart. African American Studies, or sociology, or any other grievance studies? That person is a loser.

    • convairXF92

MIT has a few weak majors (yes it has Women’s Studies!). Also–MIT does not like to talk about this–the students in Mech.Eng. and Civ.Eng. tend to be weaker than those in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering. The Brain & Cognitive Science major is considered easier than the other sciences/engineering and attracts drop-outs from the other majors.

I’ve met graduates from the “weaker majors” who were pseudo-smart at best.

    • falsedawn

The service academies all have these type of ridiculous courses now as well. They should be shut down immediately.

  • Ulick

By speaking out against legally sanctioned racial discrimination, Summerville will certainly be labelled a racist.

    • ed91

with that mug he has enough of a cross to lug around.

      • IstvanIN

This comment should be deleted as not related to the topic.

    • Tom_in_Miami

George Orwell had it right. Whoever controls the language controls the society (he didn’t say that in those words…it’s my inference).

  • potato78

Yes. Just based on SAT scores and student behavior.

  • SintiriNikos

Tennessee will be the first to secede. This seems to be the only place where AmRen conferences can take place in safety. Of course, they will have to cut loose Memphis.

    • UK Expat

Lol, I would invite you to my house to hold the conference, except for the fact it is in ‘transition’ and my wife would be embarrassed! (It is also too small, but the yard is large). The setting near Nashville is great for the Amren Conferences.

      • Garrett Brown

If you weren’t awake before driving to the conference, through Memphis will surely bring you to the light!

      • SintiriNikos

Sounds like fun. We should do one around May, watch the Derby, drink copious amounts of mint julep and live like southern gentlemen for a week. OK, you must live that life year round, but for me it would be a week living the life the way it should be. I can ditch all the tweeds and corduroy and be in seersucker and linen all day. Man, we Yanks are a bunch of rubes to live up here in the frozen belly of the liberal beast.

  • Tom_in_Miami

How dare he side with Martin Luther King who said (essentially) that a man should not be judged by the color of his skin! But, nothing will come from this brave man’s courage. We are forever locked in to black preference.

    • Ulick

I think you’re right. Politicians and elites fear revolution. If they keep affirmative action and hiring preferences whites may grouse, but they have shown that they won’t take to the streets with violence. If politicians and the elites get rid of affirmative action and hiring preferences, however, then blacks will see a huge drop in college admissions and employment because, minus affirmative action, they’re not qualified. They of course will chalk up the drop in numbers to racism, will take to the streets, burn cities, and kill white people. That’s what the elites and politicians fear most. They literally give in to violence. Eventually, if we want anything to change, we’ll have to give the elites a reason to give in to us.

      • Tom_in_Miami

We obviously don’t riot in the street (I don’t even know how to riot), but I wonder what would happen if the voters decided they had had enough and voted in representatives and a president who would give us equal rights. Would they take acttion against the rioters.? Don’t forget that a large portion of the National Guard and Army is made up of blacks.

        • Liberalsuck

Don’t forget the blacks in the national guard only have their jobs and weapons because of white taxpayers. when the tax money dries up, so will the the jobs of these blacks in govt jobs. If gangs of blacks and mexicans invaded small rural white towns, the whites would slaughter them or put up a hell of a fight. Never underestimate the power of working-class whites when they are pushed to the brink: in 1878 South Africa the 200 British men that pushed back 5000 Zulu warriors armed with only a limited supply of single-shot weapons and ammo while many being sick and ill while fighting back and while many of the Zulu stole a chunk of their weapons and ammo;in 9AD, the 4000 German farmers under Arminius who expelled 20000 Roman soldiers past the Rhine; the 9000 Frechmen who defeated 48,000 Muslim Turkish soldiers under the Siege of Malta; it was mostly white farmers in 1776 that defeated the British Army (the most powerful in the world). Don’t forget, white American citizens make up the most well armed population in the world and many of them are growing pissed off and more defiant by the day. If the black bigots, Hispanic militants, muslims and self-hating whites want to “wage war’ on the “racist conservative whites”, they will find the rattled the wrong cage.

          • Tom_in_Miami

Excellent points. The problem now is that we don’t get a full frontal assault, but, rather, we are picked off one by one by small groups of thugs who seem to operate with impunity.

  • UK Expat

Now that is encouraging, I met Mr. Summerville when he was touring my place of work – as I presented my work to TN Senate members. He seemed to like the research work I was doing.

It is true … placement should be achieved through merit. Those of minority status should attain achievement through competition, not elevation.

  • falsedawn

I guess the senator will be on our side when everything comes apart. But our focus should be on the work we’ll have to do when everything falls apart in our country and the minorities come after us. It will be very difficult work, but we’ve done very difficult, harsh things before. We’ll just have to do it again.

    • liberalsuck

Our people fought off the most powerful armies in the world, even before the days of guns, drone, aircraft, missles, etc. We did it then, we can do it again.

  • blight14

Bravo sir, bravo! A rare voice of sanity…!

  • These are excellent talking points for my school. “Diversity is anti-white discrimination based on racial preferences”. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

I’m going to use that in my discussions with our campus club to petition an end to our diversity office and racial preferences programs. We gather strength in the exchange of common interests and goals.

  • Joe Mama

WOW !! Reading the comments on the other link, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/24/jim-summerville-black-caucus-email_n_1828603.html is sickening, white people that hate the color of their own skin ..

    • liberalsuck

Those posters there are blacks, browns and self-hating whites. Our biggest battle won’t be with blacks or mexicans or asians for our survival. It will be the self-hating whites and sellout whites. Just like in the Civil War; it was white men killing each other.

  • ATBOTL

This amazing thing is that the national Republican party or even state parties won’t campaign against affirmative action. It’s like they don’t want to win.

    • Jefferson

If the GOP elites takes an anti-affirmative action stance, they are afraid they will alienate those so-called “natural Republican” Hispanics that they love pandering to so much.

Because we all know that if you eliminate affirmative action, there would be very few Hispanics who would be accepted into a 4 year university based on their merit.

Most of the Illegal Immigrants from south of the border who pour into this country have very low I.Q’s because of the high Amerindian admixture in their genes.

    • liberalsuck

The GOP has been taking the white vote for granted, just as they claim the Democratic Party takes the black vote for granted.

  • SFLBIB

Passing a law is only the beginning of eliminating diversity. California passed Prop. 209 in 1996, and the state university system still has diversity czars and their staffs with increasing appropriations while the schools are eliminating engineering degrees. Here in AZ, we passed a similar law about 5 years ago and got similar results: non-compliance by the school administrations combined with non-enforcement by the state government.
