ICAP at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health is part of a network of research organizations that jointly released study results finding that the HIV infection rate of black women living in certain parts of the U.S. is five times higher than overall rate of infection among black women estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The HIV Prevention Trials Network’s (HPTN) 064 Women’s HIV Seroincidence Study (ISIS) found an HIV incidence of 0.24% in its study cohort of 2,099 women (88% black).

Results are based on a study design that selected HIV ‘hot spots,’ i.e. geographic areas of the U.S. with elevated rates of HIV and poverty. Six distinct geographical areas in the northeast and southeast regions of the U.S. were selected—Atlanta, GA, Raleigh-Durham, NC, Washington D.C., Baltimore, MD, Newark, NJ, and New York City—where women, ages 18 to 44, without a prior positive HIV test were eligible for enrollment.

Within ICAP’s consortium of clinical research sites, the HPTN 064 study was conducted at three New York City-area sites: ICAP’s Harlem Prevention Center, the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, and the New Jersey Medical School Adult Clinical Research Center. Investigators for the study included Drs. Wafaa El-Sadr, ICAP Director; Jessica Justman, ICAP Senior Technical Director; Sharon Mannheimer, Chief of Infectious Diseases at Harlem Hospital Center; Edward Telzak, Chief of Infectious Diseases/Director of AIDS Program at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center; and Sally Hodder, Vice Chair, Department of Medicine and Director, HIV/AIDS Program in the Division of Infectious Diseases at UMDNJ.

“This study confirms that black women in these U.S. hotspots have disproportionately been affected by HIV. While we have made significant progress in HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment, our way forward must include prevention efforts tailored for these communities that are severely affected,” said Dr. El-Sadr, who is also professor of Epidemiology at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health and professor of Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Women constitute roughly one-quarter of new HIV infections in the U.S. with 66% of these infections occurring among black women, despite the fact that black women constitute only 14% of the U.S. female population. In the U.S., the age-adjusted death rate of black women with HIV is roughly 15 times higher than that observed for HIV-infected white women.

Thirty-two women in the study (1.5%) were newly diagnosed with HIV infection, at the time of enrollment, demonstrating the need to focus efforts on expanding HIV prevention and testing in hot spot areas of the US. “The study underscores the substantial ongoing HIV transmission within specific U.S. populations and highlights the need for increased focus on areas with higher HIV prevalence,” said Dr. Justman, who is also associate professor of clinical epidemiology at the Mailman School.

14% of US women are black but they constitute 66% of those with HIV? Wow, this virus is SOOO racist!

That’s why, in protest, I’m joining my fellow white heterosexuals in their 30 year long boycott of the HIV virus!

A noble and selfless gesture – one we should all emulate!

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) has published a piece on the huge problem of ‘bisexual’ Black males who engage in semi-secret homosexual intercourse and then proceed to infect women, Black and White, with HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases rampant among homosexuals:

“…Only about 13 percent of the population, black Americans account for about 54 percent of all new HIV infections. And black women are 23 times more likely to contract the virus than white women. Just a few years ago, researchers discovered a primary reason for that alarming statistic: black men who engage in homosexual activity secretly — or ‘on the down low’ — while continuing to sleep with their wives or girlfriends, who are then vulnerable to infection.”

The phenomenon has even been the subject of a book by Black writer J. L. King.

And may have been experienced by Black demogogue M.L. King…

Yes and that is the best argument against miscegenation. Free love and diversity and all that aside: it is a serious disease risk even if mulatto babies are not produced. Death by HIV scares folks far more than preaching does. Plus black/white race mixing brings those diseases risks into white populations. The folks that engage in that must be shunned.

Blacks are hard core disease risks, not just HIV but all other sexually transmitted diseases as well. The best arguments are about the disease and violence, not about why it is morally/racially wrong.

The real problem is education.  Kids in high school should be scared straight about VD.  They should be taught that many ethnic groups are much more “susceptible” than others.  Hopefully miscegenation rates, and black reproduction rates, would decrease dramatically.

Something I’ve always found remarkable coming from such a swaggering ‘macho’ population that makes such a big show of outward homophobia.
       – With blacks, you shouldn’t take *anything* at face value, you always must be full of doubts and suspicions, basically if you want to escape with your life/money, don’t trust them.

  • I think the problem is that these women are not having safe sex and their partners, who may be hiv + are not telling them the truth.

The real test of any scientific theory is its predictive value.
Prof. J. Phillipe Rushton’s theories would have predicted this pattern right from the outset of the HIV pandemic.

I can’t make up my mind if the relative silence from the media about this story is hilarious or sad. Normally, anything bad that affected black women at a rate five times greater than their population would get every Woodward and Bernstein furiously typing away. But because HIV isn’t so easily blamed on the legacy of slavery or discriminatory lending patterns (not yet, anyway), the story has been buried.

Ni88a Puhleese …. you don’t actually believe that they are all getting it from prison?

  • Alexandra1973

I would think that it’s the limited ability of blacks to think about the future.  I’m preaching to the choir here when I say that they’re typically all about self-gratification–they want it and they want it now, the future be damned.

Black social pathology is more pronounced in cities than in rural areas. This can be explained by the evolution of the Bantu, from whom American blacks are descended. The Bantu began to practice agriculture at least three thousand years ago. Large numbers of them only began to live in cities during the last century.

Racial groups that have practiced urban civilization for at least a thousand years are more civilized.

    • So we got 900 years to wait…

      • JohnEngelman

Until then we will need to keep herding them into prison. The criminal justice system of a civilized nation reduces the crime rate of its population over a period of centuries by removing those with criminal inclinations from the gene pool.

Characteristics that had survival value in a paleolithic society, or even a neolithic one, earn one felony convictions in a civilized country.

      • JohnEngelman

The descendants of the Vikings needed one thousand years of urban civilization to evolve to one of the lowest murder rates in the world. Civilization began in Egypt and what is now Iraq five thousand years ago. Egypt has an even lower murder rate than Scandinavia, although Egypt has much more poverty.
