Police Respond to Three Sexual Assault Calls over Weekend

Sergio Chapa, Brownsville Herald (Tex.), Oct. 4

Police responded to three separate reports of sexual assault this weekend, including two women and a toddler.

Police on Sunday arrested a Mexican national accused of raping his housemate’s 3-year-old daughter.

Jail records show that Julian Rodriguez, 44, was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Brownsville Police Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique said Rodriguez, his wife and their two sons shared a house on the 6100 block of Boca Chica Boulevard with a single mother with three children and one granddaughter.

Reports of sexual assault in Brownsville reached a 10-year high in 2004 with 48 known incidents, police records show.

Figures for 2005 were not available at press time Monday but Manrrique said it is important for victims to come forward as soon as possible to preserve physical evidence such as clothing and bodily fluids.

“Police will determine if an immediate arrest is warranted, otherwise they’ll continue the investigation,” he said.
