Chihana Hands Himself to Police

Aford Member of Parliament for Mzimba North Yeremia Chihana on Thursday handed himself over to police after a warrant of arrest was issued on him over the beating of deputy Health Minister Frank Mwenefumbo at the party’s executive meeting on Sunday.

Northern Region police public relations officer John Namalenga confirmed that Chihana was at Mzuzu Police Station in connection with the beating of Mwenefumbo just before the disrupted meeting took place.

“Yeremia Chihana is at Mzuzu Police Station now, he is being interrogated by the CID officials over the beating of the deputy minister during Aford executive meeting on Sunday,” he said.

Chihana was then charged with common assault and taken to the court where he was granted bail.

Mzuzu High Court assistant registrar Martha Chizuma said in an interview Chihana was granted bail and that there was no surety.

“Mr. Yeremia Chihana has been granted bail without any surety because he has another case to answer so we thought it would be too much for him and that the case is not very serious,” she said.

This is a second sympathiser of suspended Aford president Chakufwa Chihana to be nicked for assaulting the deputy minister.

On Tuesday, Mzuzu police arrested publicity secretary Norman Nyirenda but was granted bail after he brought party official Nora Chivundiko Gondwe as surety.

Chihana is also answering another case in court together with other people for allegedly wounding former UDF Mzimba North organising secretary Patrick Kumwenda who they accused of campaigning against Chihana’s wife Loveness Gondwe.

The five are also alleged to have stolen over K65,000 ($602) which, Kumwenda claimed, was payment for monitors in Mpherembe.
